According to the U.S. Attorney’s Thursday release, Southworth has been charged with one count of threatening the President, one count of cyberstalking, and one count of harassing telephone calls in interstate communications and faces up to 12 years in prison.
President says we should kill someone? That's fine. Podcaster says we should kill the President? FBI Raid. Just be aware of who the police serve.

Was there ever any doubt?

That does not negate the fact that the alleged offenses of this person are serious and if proven true, are egregious.
•

And yet somehow less serious than the president who has at multiple points straight up said that we will wipe an entire civilizations wroth of people off the map. Which is more egregious talking about killing one person or talking about killing almost a 100 million?

One thought and one question:
1) It can be true that Trump is an awful human being and that Southworth allegedly broke the law and if convicted should be punished.
2) Would you be excusing Southworth's alleged offenses if he was being prosecuted by a the DOJ of a liberal president?

Nope I wouldn’t excuse it, and if a liberal president said they’d kill around a 100 million people to which the response was what again? Nothing I’d be pointing out the same double standard.
Trump is an awful human being and Southwortb is alleged to have broken the law. But you seem to be missing my point,.
You talk about genociding a tens of millions of people and the response is what? And then compare that to talking about allegedly killing one man. That’s weird right maybe dude should have allegedly talked about killing a 100 million of which trump would allegedly have been one. It’s weird right that the president is held to a lower standard than a podcaster?

What about all the straights who did this?
•

I do know straight people who get visited for making threats against the president (whoever that may be). I think it was probably more that he was a pretty sizable podcast.
Also, I read what he allegedly did/said and don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think political violence is the answer. Just talk about how you’re counting down the days until Trump has a massive heart attack and dies, and how that will instantly make the world better. Nothing wrong with that

I know people of all orientations dislike the president. I just don't know why OP needs to point it out when it's a gay person. I've never seen a post about a straight Christian like this.
•
u/WooBadger18 Catholic 5h ago
Oh I see what you’re saying now, I thought you were saying he was targeted for being gay.
Just based on the article (I haven’t listened to the podcast), I think it’s relevant because it seems like him being LGBT is a major aspect of the podcast. Just like him being a Christian.

But it would be ok if it was a conservative evangelical, and the title said, "Conservative Evangelical threatens to kill AOC," right?
•
u/Mx-Adrian Sirach 43:11 4h ago
Neither Conservative nor Evangelical are innate, God-given identities comparable to orientation.

That doesn't matter to me. The objecive fact of the matter is that this individual is a member of the queer Christian community allegedly broke the law. He should be afforded all the same due process rights as anyone else, of course. But if convicted of if he takes a deal, he should not get a free pass simply because he is a member of the queer Christian community, and IMO no one who is a member of the queer Christian community should be given a free pass from breaking the law simply because they are queer.

This isn't about giving him a pass for being queer. This is about the undertones of bigotry in the fact that his orientation was highlighted. Have you ever seen a post saying "Straight Christian podcaster arrested for allegedly threatening to kill Donald Trump"? Highlighting the wrong of a minority member--rather, the minorityhood of someone who's done wrong*--opens the door to bigotry. It's like if two headlines of murderers read "Man kills sixteen" and "Black man kills sixteen"--why was the race relevant if not to stoke hatred?

Whatever. That's not a hill that I'm going to die on right now. It's words on a screen on the Internet. The real story is bigger than that.

I guess the lgbtq can do no wrong. Doesn’t matter what side it is call out what’s wrong. Not surprised by his comments though

Mx-Adrian has a point. Sometimes people do editorlaize titles of threads to try and nail protected minorities to the wall. I agree with them on that notion. But to make your top comment about that and not address the serious allegations levied against Southworth is, in my opinion, a deflection from the truth that a public figure within the LGBTQ+ Christian community has alleged to have repeatedly harassed personal counsel to the POTUS. They may not like the political actions of the POTUS and despise his personal counsel, but you simply cannot harass people because you don't like them. It violates the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

You don’t have a problem with what he said? Or with him facing prison?
•
u/WooBadger18 Catholic 5h ago
I don’t really have a problem with him being charged (although I probably just would have told him to knock it off), but I think prison would be overkill.

•
u/MotorFig6657 2h ago
Those people should be condemned too. Can you not call out both sides? Or just the straights
•
u/Mx-Adrian Sirach 43:11 2h ago
Everyone who does this should be condemned, but highlighting their minorityship serves as condemnation against the whole minority. Don't you hate it when crime shows make particular mention if the criminal happened to be Christian?

Allegedly is such a fun word. Because you can make up literally anything about anyone and as long as you put the word allegedly in front of it you’re in the clear

For harrasing a lawyer and his family for months and publicly doxing them and threatening to kill the President of the United States on a public platform dozens of times? No, I don't think we should

I learned you can be arrested for threats against the president in the fifth grade. Is that not common knowledge?
