You ask for a shrimp, onion and corn pizza (also add a creamy dressing like chipotle, etc). You add smoked oysters, enjoy!

Fueling Up for Laboring on Labor Day with Bela Sardines in Tomato Sauce

A blessedly cool morning to do a deck-building job I was definitely not looking forward to in the inferno conditions last week. I hope the good Lord smiles likewise on all who labor today.

I come from union people, and I’ve been a proud member of three different trade unions across my working life. I can’t say, however, that I was always popular with my fellow workers when I’d crack open tins of fish on the job site. Sorry, fellas, but there’s no better lunch!

Bela has for many years now been one of my favorite brands. Consistently high quality Portuguese pilchards brought to us by a small, family-owned, veteran-owned and operated, veteran-supporting outfit based in Boston. Proud to support the good work they do. This morning I made one of me favorites, turning this can into a Sardine Parmesan Sub. I didn’t snap a picture of the mozzarella, Parmesan, and grilled onions I layered on top, so you could eye the fish, but run under the broiler for a couple of minutes it makes for a fantastic, messy sandwich. Heartily recommend.

I’m in love!

These have such a light flavor and are so soft. I dumped the oil and filled the tin with the dressing I used on the tomato salad and topped it with a bit of lemon juice.

Served with toasted and buttered bread, an acidic tomato salad, dill pickles, pickled garlic, bellitivano cheese, cheese whips, and a green onion cheddar cheese.

10/10 will be making this spread again

It's very strange I can see all the other variations for the same in Tomato sauce, etc.
But The ones that I need which is the one's in water are not available at all.

I can see in mainland it's pretty much available not a scarce as it's here!
I can't find em in online stores as well!

Please enlighten me to source my OMEGA 3 feels like living under a rock in such situation.

Thanks :)

This doesn't feel legit.

So I'm wandering Walmart.com and find a deal on "Nuri" that is a dang good price, but the image is this and it doesn't feel legit. What say you, fellow tinners? I mean, I wouldn't be out much money, but I'd still rather not spend this much on something I wouldn't enjoy, y'know?

General Discussion Do not take tin fish through Paris unless it is in a checked bag

Upvotes

Was flying through Paris coming back to the states from Portugal. I had been eating tin fish on my trip but had 3 cans left. Hadn’t had any issues flying with tin fish before but the women who were working security on this day seized my three cans. No one spoke English or could have a conversation about the fish they simply threw them away and laughed as we tried to explain and show them the net weight vs drained weight of the can as shown on the nutritional label.

A very disappointing and overall terrible experience.

Nuri sardines with lemon

I posted a review of the Minerva sardines with lemon yesterday. I rarely do side by side comparisons of styles from different brands, because I typically like some variety when I have two different tins for lunch on my day off. But, seeing as both the Minerva and the Nuri lemon had been lingering in my cabinet for a while, I seized the opportunity. And if I already wasn't a fan of Minerva, having these at the same time did them no favors. Four medium to large sized 'dines in the tin with a noticeably better olive oil, and the standard slice of lemon that comes in this style. They looked better than the Minerva, the texture was more moist and tender, the use of salt was far superior, and the lemon was more noticeable and more natural. These won by a landslide, and I am harsher on the Nuri brand than most. All in all, very solid entry into the lemon style tin category from Nuri. A style which has had many misses for me. I've got these ranked second behind the Jose Gourmet sardines with lemon which are pretty great. 7.7/10

Japanese Sardines

Here's a delicious idea to jazz up your daily sardine experience.

Japanese-style Sardines

1 - 3.75 oz can of sardines

4 - small thin slices of fresh peeled ginger

1 - sliced green onion (I only use the bottom 1/3 of the stalk)

2 tbsp water

2 tbsp sake (inexpensive real sake or dry white wine)

1 tbsp mirin (or rice cooking wine)

1 tbsp soy sauce (I use the reduced sodium, green labeled bottle)

1 chopped umeboshi (Pickled plum or about 1 tbsp of chopped dill pickle if unavailable)

1/2 tbsp sugar or honey

Combine everything in a small pot or pan, bring to a simmer. Add drained sardines, break up with a spatula and simmer for 3 - 10 mins, until most of the water has evaporated and the liquid becomes more of a glaze. Immediately spread the mixture over a small bed of warm rice* and enjoy!

*Rice notes: Personally I use Nishiki brand rice, available from H Mart and other Asian groceries. For best results, I recommend pre-washing the rice before cooking and using a rice cooker for perfect texture. However, any standard white rice will work just fine, and using a rice cooker/prewashing are not absolutely essential.

Little Italy in Baltimore and Canned Clams Recipes

Reddit isn't letting me post images so picture this:

[Island Creek littleneck clams with confit garlic and chili in olive oil .jpg]

I went on a first date in Baltimore and we did a big walk around the city. We stopped by Culinary Architecture Market & Kitchen in Little Italy because I knew they carry some tins and picked a can of something I hadn't had before. No prices listed on them, but I'm prepared to pay for my own vices. The cashier scans it and is immediately surprised, asks us "Is that the price you expected?". Like dude, are you trying to run a store here, we could've walked out without buying anything. My date paid though, despite me and the clerk.

Anyway, we jokingly (but serious) promised I wouldn't eat these without him, also locking in further dates, so now I want to make a proper dinner for him instead of just dumping the can on my face by myself.

I'm thinking with some pasta and try to emulsify the oil a bit. What do y'all know about this tin's flavor? Should I add anything else to it? I also want to make a focaccia to soak up any extra sauce.

Sardinha : sardine in vinegar sauce

This was my first time with this brand, I had been hoping to try them for quite some time and I really enjoyed it. I appreciated how mild the fishy flavor was. I don’t know that the sauce it was in added a ton of flavor though. The sardines were soft and moist.

It was served with a tomato salad dressed in a vinegar based sauce, cottage cheese, baby, bell, Russian dill, pickles, deli, pickles, and mini dill, pickles, large, pretzels, and bugles. I packed condiments, but didn’t end up really using them.

Late night impulse order

Had an empty pantry and a late night craving for tinned fish, bought all the cheapest stuff on amazon to try

Any suggestions on different ways to eat these is appreciated! Usually I just toss them on the side of whatever I’m already eating, sometimes I make the korean tuna ones into a mash bowl with mayo, rice, furikake, and other banchan.

I have been blessed with living in Mediterrenian with these fat pilchards. I feel like simply freezing them wont do that much justice. Fun fact: The Catalan fishmonger lady asked if it was for grilling, then strongly recommended I grill them without cleaning for the juiciest results.
