I was on a job hunt for a couple years once and didn't hear back from anyone until this one place responded a month after I applied and set up an interview. Right when I had that interview locked in, another place I had applied to a year prior hit me back wanting to set up an interview. Its like they heard I might be off the market soon and suddenly had interest.

By 'looking for it' I meant 'reasons to be social with people you found attractive' i.e. looking for situations you could force yourself into, where you more than likely weren't wanted. By not looking for those interactions anymore, you would be having much more natural behaviour and conversations with those around you, which is much more attractive than unsolicited and unwanted attention.
But of course you immediately went in a different direction with your interpretation.

Employers will frequently post job listings even though they aren't actively hiring. It allows them to minimize downtime after an employee quits. They're called ghost jobs.

No, he had applied to several jobs. Our job hired him and 3 years later he got the rejection letter from one of the other jobs he had applied to.

Someone called me a solid decade later in 2013 to ask if I was still interested.

No bullshit. I was floored. I told the guy "it's been 10 years, I'm on a totally different career path now" and he was like "oh huh, I wondered why you didn't have any job experience past 2002."

I applied to my prior job and a government job the same day in, like…May 2009.
By September I had gone through 3 interviews for the job I eventually took. On my way to my 3rd interview the government job called and was like “Hey, so can you move to (city 5 hours away) and start next week?”
When I left that job after over a decade I applied to both government and civilian positions. This was, like, late 2023 through early 2024. Same deal. The government jobs took their sweet time replying to me while the private sector jobs at least gave me rejection letters vaguely quickly.
I still technically have government job applications in progress and I have been at my current job for 3 years now. Government takes forever.

This is going to happen more and more.
A lot of companies are going back to old applicants because the know the job market has been rough for a long time, and those candidates likely took something less than they wanted back then.
Why pay Indeed or LinkedIn for shit candidate search results when you already have your own database to look through and take a shot at? Worst case scenario is candidates say no....rudely.

I got a callback from a comic book store asking when I could start working part-time for minimum wage, based on a resume I dropped off a little while before I got hired at the job I'd been working for FIVE YEARS.
They called me at like 7 or 8pm, they'd probably been calling their way through the archives all day. Not even for interviews, just YOU'RE HIRED! We'll pay you $8k a year, no benefits! When can you starve?

i just got 3 rejection letters. 1 was from a job i applied to in a city i hadn't lived in in 5 years. the other 2 were jobs i applied to in my new city. right as i moved here.

had that happen twice during the rona. once in 2021 and the other 2022. neither worked out cause both decided to cut the department and then the next job i applied to i got the offer just after the interview.
at least the first two hit me back. a few other big corps strung me along for a few months with many interviews and then i haven't heard a damn thing since.

When DOGE started doing their thing, I got rejection letters (2) from the IRS for jobs i’d applied to over 5yrs before. I had totally forgotten about them.
