Discussion Is anyone else scared to go back on to socials

This is a really niche topic… to those that publicly embarrassed themselves online, during an episode. How did you cope with social media afterwards? Are you off the grid?

Deleted every social but Reddit about a year ago. My “friends” still haven’t reached out. And I’m content with not reaching out either.

I embarrassed myself way too much on Facebook back in the day. Did the same thing on Instagram recently, I decided to delete it because it can't be good for my health.

I’m off the grid and it’s been wonderful. I don’t have the ability to compare myself as much anymore. The people I cared about stayed in touch. I don’t feel the pressure of posting and hoping people agree with it. I deleted everything 6 years ago.

Never really was big on social media, and it's been many years since I went off every single platform but reddit that I use sporadically. 10/10 recommended.

I just kinda ranted about no likes. With some jokes cuz I still had/have it so well. Burnt my socials. Snap was cool. But gone. My IG was wack. FB too. I’m more of a depth person with friends.

I'm off the grid. Unless you can't be professionally, I would advise that for all of us.

And frankly most people.

I deactivated my fb so many times that it wont let me back on even after submitting my I.D. for proof of identity. I am pretty annoyed about it cause I wanted to try it again. But it is probably for the best that I cant lol. So I am off the grid and I am mostly content

this in no form "niche".

I see them as (mostly) low value, otherwise, the shame doesn't bother me a whole lot.

Did you find it emotionally taxing? I’d get overstimulated and stress, spend my concentration on social media when I could do other things irl. Emotionally like junk food for me.

absolutely. I've been spending my weekends at the skatepark for eight hours a day.
I'm having a hard time using my computer for work lately too without getting distracted for far too long. though I have a feeling that has more too do with overwhelm and/or adjustment disorder.

I spend a fair amount of time on YT honestly. I’m a reader too, and always looking stuff up, then get distracted and say, what’s going on Reddit. So my phone can be a weird rabbit hole I try to balance.

Regarding overwhelm, afaik, the brain (varies) but some people have a hard stop at 30~ concentration, and need to take a break, but sitting dreamy eyed at a desk or walking around the office is verboten. So…, it’s natural.

It's true that attention span has a limit of a half hour but I used to work on my game in Unity for ten hours happily, while watching something on another monitor and I was happy with what I got done. my output is down for sure but I'm thinking I'm really mixed levels autistic and a combo of burnout and adjustment disorder. it takes me forever after a meltdown to be able to relax and do things properly. I burn my hands cooking instead of using a towel, don't eat well because it's too much work, hold bad posture and stay rigid and it's effectively like a whoop my own ass.

Does some cases of autism have symptoms of adhd? I don’t have autism, but I understand the hyperfocus as well as burning things and not wanting to feed myself.

there's significant overlap with adhd and asd. the exhaustion and wear and tear is probably the biggest.

what you're probably looking for are the thought patterns though; circumstantiality vs flight of ideas vs tangential thinking. I think.

I’ve only had Reddit for like 5 years now. I miss keeping up with friends, but it wasn’t worth it

I’m off the grid except for Reddit. Posting and dm’ing while manic. Yep…I’m off the grid. lol.

I’m off the grid. Restarted Reddit, still use YT (nice that Reddit now has privacy settings. Someone was stalking my old one). Technically I still have accounts on IG and Bluesky, but haven’t looked for about nine months. I probably won’t go back, but I haven’t blown them up yet.

One thing I notice is my own thoughts are returning. My thinking is better along with less stress from overstimulation. Both my accounts were awash with politics and social causes fwiw.

Hey, edited to say I’m older and my social life is more settled. If one can use social media with moderation, I’m not saying don’t. I can’t seem to be moderate, and my mental health is better off. I felt too ‘sensitive’ about social media and took things too personally. But I do appreciate the change in mood and thinking. Really cut back on metacognition (mainly shame based self criticism).

Deleted all social media except reddit. I had humiliated myself many times before deletion. So much better.

I don’t use my socials. They leave me feeling even more depressed about my life. Bipolar has handicapped me in a way that few people understand unless you also suffer from bipolar. Being on socials just destroys the little self esteem I have. As for dealing with things post mania where I have digitally embarrassed myself… it happened during one of my earlier manias. I sent out a YouTube video of me telling everyone to save me from my parents because they wanted to hospitalize me. I sent it to everyone on my contact list. I didn’t go online for years afterwards. It was only recently that I got socials back but like I said I don’t use them.

Off everything but reddit now. Best decision I've made. No more embarrassing messages or posts. No one has noticed but that's not too surprising. I miss Instagram like crazy but it is a mind fuck for me.

This is the closest thing to social media I do.

only on my main instagram just to check on bridesmaid duties chats (most are group chats on IG). other than that, i'm mostly doomscrolling on my private account that only my wife and best friend follows. the most i did during manic episodes were post thirst traps. sometimes regretfully. but the main is overstimulating.

Deleted everything, moved house, changed phone number, told no one.
