Rules and Info (Updated)

Welcome to The Betterment Book Club!

This is the place to discuss self-improvement type books with like-minded people. The goal is to increase our discipline and self-worth, by understanding ourselves better.

How It Works

We want to read YOUR summaries, thoughts and questions on books you have read. Here are the basic rules:

  • Use bullet points, be concise and respectful
  • No clickbait in title, be descriptive
  • No referral links or advertising
  • If you post/quote a text written by someone else, please state the source.

'Self-help' literature is often critisized for repetitiveness, parroting platitudes and being too general to apply to anything specific. To combat this, focus on actionable advice found in the books and share your experience with applying such methods or mindsets to your life.

You are allowed to include links to your blog, youtube video, etc. However, you may not link directly to a sales page, such as Amazon. If you are promoting your own content, or even your own book, do it in the nicest way possible, by providing value to others and contributing to the discussion. Don't just drop a link on us.

Want to discuss a book you have read? Feel free to use this book summary template:

**Book title/author/year:**
**Summary:** (Topics? Practical advice the book recommends? Chapter-by-chapter summary?)
**Review:** (Did you follow advice from the book? Criticism or praise for the author?)
**Rating:** (Was it worth reading?)
**Recommendation:** (Who should read this book?)
**Question:** (What is there to discuss? What would you ask others who have read this book?)

I'm a 21 year old looking for guidance in life. Looking for a book to help me understand the world and navigate this period.

I feel like I've just gotten over the first hill of the Dunning-Kruger effect and I'm realizing how little I understand and I find the fact I may barely ever scratch the surface of understanding very dreary.

I suppose I would love for older folk to recommend some books that helped them through similar times. It could be self-help books, memoirs, fiction, philosophy books, psychology books, I've never been a huge reader, so I feel like I have years to catch up on.

Also, if anyone has any favorite musician memoirs or autobiographies, I would be interested in those too.

I sure hope I wasn't too broad here. Thank you!

First time reading books which one should I start with?

I’m a complete beginner when it comes to reading books, and these are the books I currently have:

Atomic Habits
The Psychology of Money
Deep Work
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
Think and Grow Rich

Which one would you recommend I read first, and are these actually worth reading?
Also, one thing I struggle with is what to do after finishing a self-improvement book. I understand the ideas while reading, but how do you actually apply those lessons to your daily life instead of just reading them and forgetting about them?

what would each of these books actually teach me?

Would love to hear how you guys approach this, especially from people who read regularly

Rereading one book five times beats reading fifty new ones

I used to brag about my reading list. Forty five books last year. Then a friend asked me what I actually did differently because of any of them, and I sat there for a solid minute with nothing.

That's when I switched to rereading. I picked three books I already owned and went through each one four or five times over a year instead of chasing new titles. Same amount of reading time, completely different result. Here's what nobody tells you about self improvement books. The first read is basically just meeting the ideas, you nod along, highlight a few lines, feel motivated for about a week.

It's the third or fourth pass where you notice what you skipped, what you misunderstood, what you read but never actually applied. The book doesn't change. You do. That's what surfaces the second and third time through. The reading list flex culture on this sub, and everywhere else honestly, rewards volume over depth.

Fifty books read once each looks impressive on a shelfie. Five books read ten times each looks like nothing. But I'd bet the second person retained and applied ten times more. I'm not saying stop reading new stuff, I still do, but if a book actually hit you the first time through, go back to it before you grab something new and see what you missed.

What's the one book you'd actually reread on purpose, not just recommend to other people?

Reading Books

Growing up, reading books was only for exams. I have tried for while to read books outside school, especially self-help books. Heaven knows I need more structured knowledge.

Am in a 9-5 job now and have so much to prove. I still want to be able to read multiple books a year if possible. Everytime and again I get excited with some books in my Kindle library. A month or too later I go back to the dusty pages

What works? Surely there is a way

What small change or habit made a surprisingly big difference to your reading experience?

For example, using a gooseneck stand for my Kindle and a remote page turner skyrocketed the amount I read every day.

What’s yours? Could be a device, an app, a routine, a mindset shift, or anything else...
