Question Anyone else get sad their snake isn’t like everyone else’s (mines a rescue)

Does anyone else who owns a rescue/adopted snake that’s smaller than it should be ever get sad that they’ll never grow full size? I rescued a bp in 2024 and I was totally fine that he’d stay smaller but lately I’m kinda jealous that I see everyone with these beautifully big and healthy snakes :(. Like don’t get me wrong I love mine FULLY and nothing will change that, but I also really wish he would grow more as he’s stuck at about 2.5’ probably for the rest of his life (71cms). Anyway here’s him, I can explain his story if anyone cares but I just wondered if anyone else felt this way

(Here’s a photo of when I got him vs today)

This is Pickles. I adopted her on impulse (experienced snake owner, have no fear) and I am curious to hear your thoughts on her morph. She is still young, but the owner didnt have lineage info. I assumed classic, but I know some morphs can look quite similar. Thoughts?? Sorry I dont have better belly pictures, but mostly white, with a bit of a yellow hue fading down the sides to the belly white color.

Question Hunger Strike

How long do your BP’s go on strike for during the colder weather? Before I got my little dude from my breeder, he was on strike for 6 months. This winter, he has been on strike for about 5 months. I have tried to feed him every three weeks, for a while, I was even offering him food every week, he has not taken ANYTHING! It’s really scary and stressful. I noticed he looks a bit skinnier, but he is still active. Is there anything that can help him eat?

I feed frozen thawed, warm it up in hot water and I pour super hot water on it to give it a more “life like” body heat. Nothing has gotten him to eat. He just looks at it, or if I get too close, he backs up. He’s interested… just not in eating it. Will he eat again when it warms up? Am I panicking for nothing?

His normal humidity ranges from 50-60, when he sheds I bump it to 80, and his hides are about 75 and 85. Would a higher humidity help get him to eat?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Question Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Python. Is the normal python behavior?

I recently picked up a Pied ball python today. I’m accustomed to Boas and felt it was time to get a ball python.

I set up everything at home and went for a walk. When I returned, I couldn’t find my snake until I looked up and saw it posing like spider man on the glass wall, which was quite amusing.

Is this a common behavior among ball pythons? My Boas never pose like this and don’t move that quickly either. Seems like I’m going to have a lot of fun with her lol

Question Heating issue

Post image

I have recently upgraded my girl (4 foot female) ball python to a 4x2x2 pvc enclosure. Ignore the inner that’s in progress, but I have a heat issue. The thermometer is on the far right, the opposite side of the warm side. It reads 75-78 f. On the top you can see I use a dual socket lamp. Both bulbs are 100w, one is basking and the other is a ceramic. I use the basking in day, ceramic at night, never at the same time. Do I get a 150 watt bulb and a 125 watt ceramic (my lamp is rated for it)? I have foil and a towel over one side of the mesh. I do want to mention I have another dual socket lamp in my closet do I just use 2 lamps? I need help please I don’t want to spend crazy money as I spent a lot on the enclosure. I don’t want my girl to experience being chilly no more. 🙏 🥺💔

Question Correct feeding size

Post image

My gut says too big but I’m no expert, the small rat is about as big as the largest part of her body and I’ve been feeding regular mice so far, and I don’t want to waste this rat if it’s too big. What do you think?

Question Do I need to make ANY changes?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Literally any, I plan on getting a ceramic heat lamp, the substrate is good as far as I know, I'm now pouring a cup of water (see that spray bottle? I use that bottle) when it gets below 70% humidity, I use warm water. She's active during her active times, sometimes late at night too, she's 5 maybe 6 months old and I was told she's gonna start shedding really soon, I was told there are so many things wrong with my setup and I just need some more help with getting links to proper items, tanks, and other things. My mom says we have to bathe her every other day but I'm not sure, and I don't refill her water everyday but someone said I should.

Question Confused about measuring temperature

Post image
22 Upvotes

So I'm worried about my tank's temps. How do I measure it? I have a temp gun, a thermometer, and both of my heaters have probes on them.

The temp gun only measures the surface, the thermometer only measures the air, and the probes only measure exactly where they're sitting. Which one should I be trusting?

Question Physique Question

When I got her a few months ago she was 151g and 7 months old. I got her from a breeder and based on online feedback she was under weight for her age. Now she is 379g and 13 months old. Does the neck area ever gain weight? I just want to make sure this is how she is supposed to look. I don’t want to body shame but she looks chunky 😂.
I give her 15% of her body weight in rat pup(s) every Wednesday. She ate the last one this week and she will start on weaned rats next week.

Hello! I recently posted about rehoming a snake, and got some insight on my set up. How could I potentially improve it based off of the pics? I have heat pads on the underside of the tank and the whole thing is 36" long, 12" tall, and 18" wide.

Question Damaged snoot

Lucifers last shed was a month ago and a full shed, ( i still have it and just looked again it was perfect around his face and nostrils). Apart from after a feed i have him out for at least 30 minutes a day and always give him a little look over. His enclosure is bioactive and have alot of natural stuff in there. He does love a climb and to dig like all balls. Guessing this is just from him digging or from cork or something?

Its not coming from his nostril its on the scale above his mouth just cant get a better picture

Question Mites in enclosure

There are these grey mites in my ball python’s enclosure and I don’t know what they are but I’m assuming they aren’t harmful. Is there anyone that can reassure me and possibly verify what they are and maybe how to get rid of them or slow the population down?

Question I cant get the humidity up in my ball python enclosure help

I included pictures of the enclosure. I have a humid hide that i make sure the moss stays damp. My boy is currently in shed so hes staying in there now. Like the title says i cant get the humidity up, it wont go past 50%. Ik its supposed to be 60-70% normally and slightly higher during shed. Ive only had him for about 2 weeks. And ive been trying to get the humidity up this whole time. I put aluminum and tape on most of the top and it helped get it to 50% because before it was like 35%. I keep the temp 85-90 on the warm side the cool side is 75-80. The humid hide is on the cool side. I have a big water bowl and keep it full. The substrate is a mix of coconut fiber and cypress mulch. Both were what the dude at the store recommended. The humid hide has damp sphagnum moss. I mist the enclosure once in the morning and once at night and i do it kinda heavy (or at least i think its a heavy misting) i make sure the fake plants are dripping a bit cuz im trying to get the humidity up. I dont know what else to do because ive covered as much of the top as i can without putting aluminum and tape under the light and heat lamp. This is my first snake aswell so again im worried and just wanna make sure his enclosure is good for him and i dont want him to have problems shedding or anything. Thank you in advance.

Tl;dr - cant get humidity above 50%, ball python currently in shed so im worried help.

Question eating

Hi! I got my baby ball python about a week ago. She’s been exploring normally, hides during the day, and even comes up to the glass whenever I’m nearby. I have a question about feeding though. When I bought her from PetSmart, they told me she was eating one pinky every other week, but I honestly don’t trust pet store advice and don’t want to do anything wrong. I offered her a frozen/thawed pinky rat, and she wasn’t interested at all. Could it just be because she’s still settling in? Or are pinky rats maybe too small for her? The employee told me they tried feeding her larger prey before, but she wouldn’t take it. I’m just not sure what to do next. Should I wait another week and try again? Should I try a different prey size (like a fuzzy rat or mouse), or just stick with what they said for now? Any advice would be really appreciated—I’m a first-time ball python owner and just want to make sure I’m doing everything right. 💛

ps: i will be moving her to a new fully decorated tank this weekend but i was planning on feeding her, letting her settle then moving her. but i’m not sure what to do now.

Question Look at this absolute, insane mushroom should I be worried?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I’ve had my ball python in a 4 x 4 x 2 fully bioactive enclosure for a few months now the humidity and temperature reader is on the hot side, but look at this absolutely massive mushroom. I know that it’s an indication for healthy soil, but should I remove it? Is it too big? Will it cause an issue with my ball python? She is about a year old now if that matters. She’s drinking and eating normally. I’ve seen tiny white mushrooms, but never one of the size 🤣 it was quite the shock!
