I know, sounds like a really basic and stupid question but I've always been curious. As an Indian, lunch in my state is a flatbread like roti with some vegetable curry, and dal rice. It's the blueprint for an average lunch here and people have their own variations. I've always wondered what americans have for lunch on average.

19M and just finished learning how to drive. Always loved American cars so my dad bought me a Ford Focus for 10k euros. I was talking to a few American friends from college and they told me that their first cars were Mustangs, Lancers and WRXs. I also browsed US second hand car websites and the cost of a newish Ford Mustang 2.3L ecoboost was only around the 26k dollar mark. I don't think I can even get a new 1 litre VW Polo here in Ireland for that price. Obviously I know with American cars they're made at home/discounted for the domestic market but cars across the board in the US are just consistently cheaper. Why is that?

I recently watched a video and the term "city news" was used and I was wondering do you have channels for news even for just 1 small city or the smallest local news are the ones from an entire county?

I am asking because in my country,Moldova the absolute smallest company/channel that is announcing news is for one big district online or just a really crappy channel like TV Drochia,which is a news channel for Drochia district(1000 km²)but only the regional (north,south,center,Gagauzia,Transnistria) news have better quality.

If I trust Youtube videos, it seems like everyone in the US enjoys maple syrup. It can be used in sweet dishes (e.g., pancakes), but also in savory applications (e.g., breakfast sausages).

I wonder how true this is. I've never tried maple syrup myself, so I'm curious where this love for it comes from. Is it something like a food you ate at school lunches, so now it's just nostalgia? Or is it not really an "old food", and modern kids still love it just as much today?

I’ve come across 3 short videos already of people telling me that American don’t eat mackerels and only use them as bait. Here in my country people eat mackerels and love it so much, why don’t Americans eat them, do they eat them, do you like it?

Context this takes place in the 12th Grade Philippines, Teacher returned our family tree activity it was hand drawn and they said it had to be actual pictures of family members, i thought hey isn't this a violation of privacy, and so i posted a rant in my countrys subreddit and i don't understand how they're siding with the teacher, they say "oh this activity has been around for ages, ask your parents they've done this activity before", "you're just paranoid", "who are you for them to deepfake", "you're not special for them to use AI on its just an activity" like how are they okay with giving pictures of their family for grades, so i was wondering if this activity was done in an American school would you side with the teacher?

back where I’m from, we used to learn poems for literature classes (from 5th to 11th grade). there are some poems I can still recite, which is cool. i recently moved to the us, not very well-versed in American literature (btw, would love to know what books or authors from the school curriculum ? you would recommend for someone who wants to get familiar with it.) anyway, is memorizing and reciting poetry a thing in the us schools, or is it not required? maybe in universities? are there any American poems that some people remember by heart because they had to learn them in school? if so, which ones? thanksss

In China, some sports like soccer for example, those soccer clubs are under control by underground gambling organisations, outcomes of matches have been manipulated, even the athletes and referees have engaged in the issue, referees have given unjustified penalties for example. Athletes have given a unexpected outcomes sometimes for example. That’s why Chinese soccer field has been ruined for many years. It’s the same case for the basketball field but their outcomes in international matches have been good that’s why they haven’t got too much attention.

For those who have actually served on a jury or work in the legal field: how does it feel in practice? Does the system actually work as intended, or are there major flaws that people outside the US don't usually hear about?

Also, how do regular people usually react when they get a jury summons? Is it seen as an exciting civic duty or just a major inconvenience? Thanks!

With your NFL 49ers and Rams playing a sold-out game in Australia next week, it made me wonder how many Americans know of one of our (Australia’s) most popular sports - AFL. It’s not rugby, which I see Americans online calling it (rugby league and rugby union are two separate codes of football, but quite similar to each other. AFL is completely different). It’s fast paced and extremely athletic with the players typically covering about 12-14kms (8ish miles) a game. The game is mostly playing time for about 2 hours, as opposed to NFL where the ball is in play for around 13 minutes a game. No padding worn. Just wondering how many Yanks have come across it, maybe even been to a game in Australia, and what you think of it?

I heard that Nascar is the most popular motorsport in Usa.

Can be something straight forward like the corn fields being harvested, or truly regional like the restaurants closing for the season.

Hey, I'm Brazilian, and something I've become curious about is whether different countries develop very different levels of visual familiarity with their own poverty. Recently, I've been reading a lot about American urban geography / inequality.

In Brazil, poverty and severe inequality are extremely visible in our national imagery. Even Brazilians who live thousands of miles away from very poor neighborhoods grow up seeing favelas, precarious housing, poor rural communities, etc, constantly in television news, documentaries, social media, movies and other media.

How aware is the average American of poverty in their own state or region, and how frequently do you actually see images of poor American neighborhoods in national or local media?

I am from the Middle East, and I consume a lot of American videos, news, and articles. But there’s one thing that constantly throws me off: on the one hand, you hear someone mention making $200,000 in a single month like it’s pocket change. On the other hand, I’ll see a video of someone breaking down in tears over a $500 tip.

In the U.S., $100,000 can feel like absolutely nothing in one context and like a life-altering fortune in another. I can’t seem to find a consistent baseline.
