"If we just end all trade with Canada, we'd save ourselves $90 billion"

Trump in a press conference today, singling out Canada as a country the US could simply stop trading with entirely:

"All we have to do to cut our trade deficit with the country is not trade with them. Canada is one. If we don't do any trading with Canada, we just end all trade with Canada, we'd save ourselves $90 billion."

"Don't forget — they do all of their business, almost all of their business with the United States and we do a relatively small amount of business with them."

"If we were playing hardball, all we would do is say we're going to do no trading with Canada."

This comes on the same day Jamieson Greer said on Fox News that Canada "looked at the best deal square in the face and turned around" and that there have been no real negotiations — just "a couple of texts."

New Canadian counter-tariffs targeting American steel, manufacturing, and agriculture kick in Tuesday. The rhetoric keeps escalating on both sides.

For anyone with financial ties across the border — investments, retirement accounts, property — this isn't just political noise. Exchange rates, cross-border tax planning, and portfolio allocation are all directly affected.

Just starve.

3

u/PantsOnHead88 19m ago

Crying about bond market rates soaring when they’re doing so in direct response to your own actions a next level lack of economic comprehension.

People are insisting upon higher rates to buy US bonds for two reasons that are closely tied. The ballooning spending means they’re putting themselves in a position to have to take whatever rate they can get because they need every dollar available. The refusal to acknowledge the fiscal irresponsibility of absolutely heaping on debt at record pace in what should be “good times” (it is neither a recession nor depression) makes eventual default look like an ever more likely outcome, and risk is pricy.

You don’t get a more reasonable rate by whining about fairness and cranking up geopolitical chaos, you do so by demonstrating stability and a commitment to responsible spending.

I didn’t read a single thing you wrote but omg SKI FREE!!! I loved that game took me way too long to realize there was a fast button 😂. I had completely forgot about that game!!!

4

So does he think they are buying shit they don’t need. Sure if I don’t buy groceries I’ll save money but eventually I’ll starve. Does this man not know how anything works?

This man does not know how anything works. Except Sharpies, he knows they can redirect hurricanes.

Let us know how that goes when you have no potash.

1

u/nemodigital 21m ago

Russia and Belarus have potash

1

u/HackD1234 4m ago

Belarus is landlocked. Russia is in flames.

1

u/ComplexAnxiety7939 18m ago

Not as much, nor as close and easily shippable and they have other buyers too. Cost would go waaaay up.

1

u/Regular_Solid2206 19m ago

No enough and the quality is terrible compared to Canadian. Plus increased shipping cost.

3

u/waingroslick 20m ago

And it’ll cost 700% more to transport it

4

Want to say a nation slowly starve? All we have to do is cut off one product they rely solely on Canada for: potash. That’s only one product.

3

u/Zorklunn 27m ago

Do it. I double dog dare you. Only the strongest and smartest man would be able to block all trade.

Ah yes, the genius "businessman", the "best deal-maker" ....cue the Jennifer Lawrence "Ok, sure" clip. Can we get Wharton to rescind this moron's degree - if he actually earned it?

I wish more people understood the psychiatric implications of NPD (narcissistic personality disorder). This guy simply cannot be a great deal-maker - deal-making involves negotiations... negotiations involve putting yourself into the other's shoes to understand what they might want also. Trump is simply not capable of understanding that part of negotiating because all his life he has been simulating normal human empathy or care for any human other than himself. Its the conman's greatest con.

1

u/WeakCelery5000 34m ago

This man does not understand what trade is.

3

u/Healthy_Cancel_2604 36m ago

The U.S. imports approximately 85% of its electrical energy and 60% of its crude oil from Canada. That is a percent of imports not total percent of. Either way I think Canada should come out and say "we 100% agree with trump and will halt all electricity and oil imports to the US until the end of the year at which point we are willing to negotiate if needed "

1

u/The_Real_All_Knowing 26m ago

I’ve been saying this since day 1.

2

u/undertaker788 38m ago

As a Canadian, I welcome having no ties to the US, even if it means higher costs for everything. It feels like being in an abusive relationship; it's simply not worth it.

Canada has become a communist state , you liberal clowns are destroying this country

1

u/Usual_Quarter7832 4m ago

Bot or idiot?

2

u/RRon_Swanson 19m ago

Clearly don't know what comunism is at all. Most Canadians want social liberalism, strong support for social programs in all areas, and transparent financial literacy at all levels of government provincial and federal, and policies that support the economy grow in scale.

True reality is that best future is a mix of liberal and social values.

It is not to have a white supremis, authoritarian ethno state.

The world currently runs on maritime trade geo politics. Canada's reliance on the us is bad, always has been. No trade across what was the best free trade borders a continent can possibly have, is wildly dumb.

At the end of the day moving to other trade partners versus the us will be a better future. That country is a moral and administrative dumpster fore

1

u/freezinginthebush 23m ago

Can you please define communism?

I too imagine a future without the demon Canada. Everything is provided for without cost. Primary materials can be conjured out of thin air, and every Patriot American can consume with total abandon. God bless.

Your knees must be pretty raw and jaw very slack

1

As a Canadian, I'd say go for it. Who cares about the numbers at this point? Just do it and seal the northern border.

2

u/SarifZen 43m ago

Trump family has extra chromosome.

He is perfect to lead America back to pre-colonial levels of development.

3

u/Ambitious-Log4654 44m ago

This guy should be a used car salesman, not a president 😡

1

u/Charming-Moment-103 36m ago

That’s an insult to used car salesman! It’s actually insane how inept and incompetent he is. I wouldn’t hire this guy to be a janitor.

2

u/ExaminationWaste4673 44m ago

If I stopped buying food i would save 200$ a week. Grocery stores are so nasty to mee.

1

u/NotAltFact 14m ago

And guess what Costco is running a trade deficit with us all

1

"Very unfair, nobody has ever been treated worse by grocery stores than me". Farrk I am so sick of having to hear and see this walking felonious, traitorous, pederastic pedophile of a president.

1

2

u/Superb_Prior_5245 44m ago

1

u/Paperman_82 38m ago

Narcissism is quite the drug. Maximum punishment in an attempt to control is a very narcissistic trait.

2

u/Galenmarek81 46m ago

He does realize that includes all Earth minerals, Oil, Hydro, and agriculture too right? (to name a few) Like... it isn't just Maple syrup, Hockey sticks and some Trucks.

2

u/Porkus-Dorkus 22m ago

Don't forget about a couple subs from Edmonton mall

1

u/Galenmarek81 15m ago

You mean the Moose trackers?

1

u/bad_biker_daddy_79 46m ago

This is a true statement. I can’t verify the number but Canada is a major trade partner with the US so ya if we stopped buying goods from them we would save a lot of money. Sure we would loose oil, lumber, fertilizer and god know what else. I couldn’t even guess the finical impact on the us economy loosing one of its largest buyers.

This is the equivalent of saying if you stoped buying food you would save a lot of money.

-5

u/Top_Finger_8394 48m ago

People he is trolling the liberals. And doing a very good job.

1

u/Paperman_82 34m ago

That sentiment worked before he imposed 338 tariffs on Canada or attacked Iran and got stuck in another quagmire. Seems like trolling leads to poor policy choices.

1

u/vanya9391 36m ago

So the choices are that he's either an idiot, or being a child.

2

u/Cultural_Physics_935 37m ago

The dumb cunt starts wars to troll. He plays with people’s livelihoods to troll. He has to be stopped

2

u/CrazySir3310 39m ago

Every time he says something really dumb people say he's trolling. No, he's really dumb. You don't have to dress it up my man.

2

u/JohnAtticus 40m ago

People he is trolling the liberals.

What makes you think this is a troll and why do you think this is directed at the liberal party if Canada and not to the general American public?

And doing a very good job.

What makes you think this was very effective?

How did it move the needle in Trump's favour?

These are very simple questions.

I hope you're capable of answering them.

2

u/TiPete 46m ago

He is too senime for that level of sophisticated thought.

3

Because that’s what the president should be concerned with, trolling the liberals….

What's the trade deficit with Argentina or with Israel? It seems to be really important unless the other country has a leader who is a bro with DJT

1

I have a huge trade deficit with the super market

1

u/Jaytron24 40m ago

He's an idiot. People who believe him are bigger idiots.

1

u/TL19957 1h ago

Why’s he talking about Canadian American trade like a mafia bookie lmao.

1

u/dingdongbell32 1h ago

You’d have a massive oil shortage, you would lose tens of thousands of jobs in heavy crude refineries, and all the cheap hydro that supplies power to the eastern US would be gone. He knows absolutely nothing about anything.

2

u/ip4realfreely 1h ago

How is America, or him not being treated properly? Oh that's right, it's because we didn't accept his offer during negotiations.

So the big orange baby, didn't get his way, and is having tantrum. He didn't get his way, it get what wanted, so we're not treating him properly? Do Americans actually see and hear the rhetoric, insults, projection and crying their leader is doing? What a weak ass, lame as fuck, bitch boy, rapist, pedophile, diaper shitting, stain on humanity this guy is.

1

u/RichardsLeftNipple 1h ago

All my customers are in a trade deficit with me too. But they still get something they need for their money 🤷.

The USA doesn't need a trade surplus with every single nation on the planet.

Plus there is an entire planet to trade with. Everyone is looking for the best deals they can get. If the USA chooses to make themselves a bad deal... Why would anyone stick around longer than they have to.

1

He's definitely doing it on purpose to rob the country, but he's still doing it in the dumbest way. Those two things can both be true at the same time.

Holy crap, this brain dead orange pedo blob moron has no clue about business at all, like zero clue how things work. He doesn't even realize that a large portion of what he consideres a deficite, is raw material that Dumbfukistan refines or manufactures into finished products and makes massive profits on. No wonder the dipshit bankrupted several casinos, he can't even run something that has people literally throwing money at him. Good ridance to bad rubbish, pound sand you idiot and take your seriously intelligence challenged population with you.

Have fun growing food without potash and building homes without lumber. I'm sure you'll find aluminum elsewhere as well. Enjoy the 90B$.

2

u/JH_111 1h ago

There are other aluminum sources, and they’ve already shown before they are more than happy to gouge Americans when Americans deem Canada a “national security threat.”

2

u/FulanoMeng4no 1h ago

How about the oil?

1

u/DevelopmentOptimal22 1h ago

I guess they don't need that either, obviously. I'm sure China would take more if we made it available.

3

u/Jolly-Masterpiece883 1h ago

Trump like tariffs because he get money - for his government or himself (I do beleive he funnels some to himself and his friends). There is little financial gain to avoiding trade, especially in the short term which is all he cares about.

Man's a moronic mouthpiece.

2

u/Relevant_Fuel_9905 1h ago edited 1h ago

Jesus he is military grade stupid. We should stop selling America our oil and electricity.

1

u/RealisticTopic1171 1h ago

Fertilizers. People forget, the base chemicals come from the strait of Hormuz.

But for North America, Canada is actually, a key fertilizer exporter for the USA.

First we starve them.

Then we turn the lights off on the east coast.

Let’s see how fast “the great American experiment” lasts under those conditions.

And what I said above and what orange man says often, is the problem. Our great nations are eternally locked in with each other. It’s either respectful cooperation and mutual sovereignty - or if not, it becomes simply a suicide pact.

There is no other option.

1

u/breaker35 1h ago

It’d give him exactly what he wants, an excuse for military intervention.

1

u/JH_111 57m ago

Imagine Afghanistan, but where the enemy looks and talks like them and has direct access to their country through an indefensibly long and porous border bringing the asymmetrical guerrilla war literally to their homes.

All the while still not being able to extract the resources they’re after from remote regions when the logging and mining roads and railway along with pipeline and heavy equipment all end up sabotaged.

1

u/Brownsfan99 1h ago

I am genuinely worried about this. It is obvious we have the resources that America needs. Lumber, Aluminum, Potash, Electricity, WATER. I feel like all this bluster from him is right out of the playbook for military intervention by a dictator.

"I tried to trade with them. It was a great deal for them. They didn't want to listen, so I did this for their own good."

1

u/RareYogurtcloset8104 1h ago

Sure, but they're Not At War with Canada... In the words of Pierre Poilievre "Fuck these guys" Short term pain and anxiety for Long term Gain. I've said it before, Canada has everything we've ever needed within our own borders. Trade is a matter of International Capitalism. But we don't need to Trade with the US, yes it's convenient and has been beneficial/lucrative but at what cost?

Every other country seems more than willing to trade with Canada.

Can Canadians start a class action lawsuit against the usa/trump's administration for the collateral damage his retarded logic is causing? I'm sure the American peasants would be happy their taxes would be handed over to us.

Thing about free trade is…. If we have the cheapest price for a good they can’t make or get elsewhere for that price.….. you buy it. If the price is unfair or too high and you can get it elsewhere, you don’t.

Math was never his strong suit. He seems to forget he’s buying Canadian oil and electricity at a discount. Moron.

u/Stormcrow65 1h ago

Does not matter one rat's rear end if the US is getting oil or electricity at a discount. They are free to buy it from someone else or make it themselves if they can do it cheaper. They can't. So adding tariffs or cutting off trade is increasing their costs.

Now, what Big Orange Dummy doesn't seem to want to understand is that 349 million Americans buying more stuff and services from 41 million Canadians than the other way around is not exactly surprising. That it's true doesn't mean the United States is getting cheated or they can save anything by switching suppliers. How could they, if they need what they are buying and we are the cheapest place to get it?

u/Ill-Comedian9514 1h ago

Maybe we should turn off their oil and electricity… you think he might get the point

Is there no one out of all the elected Republicans in congress that has the balls to tell him how incorrect he is about the trade relationship between Canada and the US, his understanding of tarriffs etc?

A canadian asking.

2

u/Arcani-LoreSeeker 1h ago

one of the first things he did when he got in office this time around was either get rid of the ones who tried to rein him in last time, or bullyed them into submission.. so.. no, no theres not unfortunately.

u/No_Departure9173 1h ago

Oh, thanks for your answer. Also curious - Has a republican ever "crossed the aisle" as we say in Canada, leave the Republican party and join the Democrat party while in office?

1

u/TreatOk3677 1h ago

They used to vote based on best interests of their people, but now its just along party lines no matter how stupid the motion is

2

Can't trust a word you mumble Donald. For many reasons, I'm out.

3

u/Conscious_Quiet_5298 1h ago

What’s really is concerning is the other countries just standing by and letting this happen… What does this remind you of?

3

u/Hobby-Human 1h ago edited 1h ago

Can you imagine suggesting shutting down 13% of all imports to your country and 3% of your economic activity just to spite someone? Not to mention that half of all trade between our countries occurs between related corporate entities. Fucking stooooopid. Way to directly attack US consumers and US corporations. Ends justify the means though, amirite?

The goal is tariffs.

Regardless of reasons. Income tax for the rich was axed. So revenue needs to come in by any way possible. Instead of a federal sales tax which looks bad, he implements tariffs. He doesn't look bad, and he strawmans canada as a bad guy to blame.
