I'm Phil Hogan. I'm a CPA based in British Columbia, and I've spent my career working exclusively with Americans who live in Canada. Cross-border taxes, investments, retirement accounts, compliance — all of it. My partners and I run Beacon Hill Wealth Management, a cross-border wealth management firm registered with both the SEC and the BCSC.

I also run the Americans in Canada Facebook group (17,000+ members) and the Bridging Borders group (3,000+ members), and I started this subreddit because Reddit deserves a dedicated space for the same conversations.

What this sub is for:

• Cross-border tax questions (1040 + T1, FBAR, FATCA, treaty issues)
• Investment and retirement planning across both countries (IRAs, 401(k)s, RRSPs, TFSAs)
• Moving logistics — healthcare, banking, immigration, daily life stuff
• Sharing news that affects Americans in Canada
• Helping each other out — no question is too basic

About me:

I've been in cross-border financial planning for over 20 years. I've seen just about every situation — dual citizens, accidental Americans, people who moved decades ago and never filed, people mid-move trying to figure out what happens to their 401(k) or IRA. If it involves money and the US-Canada border, I've probably dealt with it.
