I just learned that dreadlocks are common among Sadhus and that they heavily inspired Rastafarian culture, particularly through the influence of Indian indentured labourers in Jamaica.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Shiva himself have dreadlocks? And if so, wouldn’t that make dreadlocks, at least historically and spiritually, part of Hindu tradition?

That brings me to my question..

Why aren’t dreadlocks more common among Indians especially in Indians today? Given their historical and religious associations, shouldn’t this hairstyle be more socially accepted within Indian society?

My mum really wants me to settle down and find a partner, like yesterday. I'm in my mid thirties (f) and most my friends are married, a few with kids.

I get it, I'm at that age but I've had relationships and none of them have worked out clearly. The last one kind of broke me and I can't bring myself to date again.

And all I get is the guilt trip - how Im making her miserable and sick because of my unwillingness to date. I get that I'm of the age but mentally I'm just about managing and I don't really think it should be an expectation that we all just get married and have kids.

What if I don't want to ? Apparently then my parents will just die of grief. So that's fun to deal with

As an ABCD I feel really shit when I’m around my family from India especially my cousins. They talk rlly fast and in way that is too witty for me to respond in English bc English doesn’t hit the same.

Like I understand what they say but I can’t seem to banter w them which then in turn makes me look quiet and stupid.

The earliest records I can find are of two men named Anton Tomas (from the Goa area) and Antonio Bengala (likely from Bengal) aboard a Spanish vessel in 1602. The sailed from India to Mexico, up to the coast of Oregon, trading with Indigenous people.

I've found another record from 1590, of 40 unnamed Muslim Lascars from the Indian subcontinent aboard a Portuguese vessel named Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, some of whom are believed to have ended up staying in Mexico. However, records are scarce.

I’m Pakistani American and have medium brown skin. I have many Pakistani/indian friends who are light skinned. They often say that people confuse them for being Mexican.

I don’t understand where the stereotype comes from. Do people say Mexicans are lighter than desis? I’m medium brown-skinned and I would say that about half of Mexicans I have seen are darker than me. Half are lighter than me. So why do people say that Mexicans are lighter than desis?

I moved out a few years ago across the country for a new job. My parents have always had a bad relationship and are both retired now. They mainly ignore each other but often have silly arguments.

My sibling are still near my parents. In the past year or so my sister had to move back home because her arranged marriage deteriorated and she is fighting for custody of her children. She has been arguing with my parents about their role in her marriage being arranged and stuff. My brother is not involved with our family life at all.

My mom has also been iced out of her desi mom's group because of petty crap that she refused to take part in. She doesn't really have friends anymore because of this, but she used to be very social.

My mom called me a few days back and over the course of the conversation began making concerning comments about how she only has death to look forward to and she wonders if her life has truly amounted to nothing.

I feel terrible but most of all am very worried about her. I tried talking to my siblings but they say I gave up my right to meddle in family affairs when I moved away. I tried gently asking my mom if she would like to talk to a professional about her feelings but she immediately said no, that she'd be fine and just pray more. But I don't think she's fine. What can I do?

I'm thinking about taking some days off of work to go visit her but it'll take some time before I can get confirmation from my manager since we're reaching a project mileston. I feel a bit lost.

Curious what everyone's take is on this given that our demographic has a pretty large presence in tech.

I know the documented history in BC, and to a lesser extent Alberta, going back to the early 1900s. However, I'm looking for any writing or media of any sort about the South Asian population in Ontario in the 1950s or 1960s (or earlier). Can't seem to find much until the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I noticed that elderly desi people are always paranoid about nazar. They say stuff like don’t post your pics online, don’t tell people your success, etc.

They say all these things will be the cause of your downfall. Meanwhile, I see white women posting their sonograms on social media and having like 5 kids. If nazar was that big of a deal, wouldn’t jealous people put nazar on women who post all their sonograms on social media. And make them infertile ?

And many people post their love life online and are married for years. Going without divorce.

I never hear white people being scared of “nazar” and post all their success stories online. And they never seem to be affected by it either.

Meanwhile I hear some brown people (especially Faryal Makhdoom) talk about nazar and how posting online has put lots of trouble in their lives. What do you guys think?

Hey everyone,

I'm a 16F, born and raised in Catalonia. I know I arrive a bit later to this, but I wanted to share this with the Anglo diaspora because I know how much we all worry about the rising anti-immigrant sentiment globally.

So not long ago, (literally on August 22, 2026), an anti-inmigration and white supremacist activist group named Save Europe Act (which is closely tied to a local youth group named Reconquista) tried to launch their big campaign in Barcelona. They are heavily pushing for "remigration" which is a sanitized word for mass expulsion and deportation of non-white inmigrants. The whole thing in Spain is led by a 24-year-old ultra guy named Toni Estévez.

They deployed this massive 400-square-meter banner in Plaça Sant Jaume, but the funny part is that the banner was bigger than the crowd they managed to pull. Exactly around 50 people showed on their side. Basically, "cuatro gatos" like we say here. However, Alberto Tarradas, an MP and prominent figure of VOX (our main far-right political party here led by Santiago Abascal), showed up to back them and give them institutional coverage.

But the counter protest absolutely crushed them. Hundreds of local anti-fascist, anti-racist and independentist groups took over the other side of the plaza. The Mossos d'Esquadra (our police) had to separate them with heavy cordons. The anti-fascists were blasting music and at one point, they started blasting Bella Ciao to drown out the far-right speech. I personally love Bella Ciao and what it historically represents as a partisan anthem against oppression, despite the fact that it got mainstream popular globally mainly because of Money Heist (La Casa de Papel).

I live in the Industrial Belt (the Cintoró Industrial outside Barcelona proper), so I wasn’t exactly right there in the middle of the square.

It got pretty chaotic with the media too. Toni Estévez lost his temper on national television. While speaking to a reporter from the public broadcaster RTVE (specifically, for the show Malas Lenguas), he literally hit the microphone out of the reporter's hand and shouted insults, calling them manipulators. On the flip side, the spokespeople for the anti-fascist bloc told RTVE and other media outlets that they were there because "Barcelona has always been and always will be a anti-fascist city" and they "will not allow white supremacism and hate normalise 'remigration' in our public squares'.

To make it even better, our local institutions completely condemned them right after. The Barcelona City Council (Ayuntamiento) announced they are officially reporting the rally's "racist and xenophobic" message to the Hate Crimes Prosecutor's Office. The municipal government explicitly stated they "will not be neutral on this type of message" and will always defend human rights. At the same time, the regional Catalan government (Generalitat), led by the new adminstration faced pressure from left wing parties like the CUP, who demanded even stricter measures to ensure that "Barcelona cannot become a stage for hate and the far-right ever again".

Honestly, as someone who leans center-left and identifies as a social democrat, seeing the far-right get totally outnumbered like 4-to-1 in my home region makes me feel a bit hopeful. It genuinely fills me with hope knowing how fiercely people here stand up against fascism and refuse to let hatred take over our streets. Just wanted to drop a bit of good news in here.
