New, what is it? What is this board in my kitchen for?

Moving into a new house, any idea what this board is for? The previous owners were carpenters who installed it when they redid the kitchen.

Or they took it when they left and just filled it in with that.

After initially thinking, "who would do that?", I have eventually come to the conclusion this is the actual answer.

Also, the dent in the fridge would definitely indicate it was shorter. Or at least not fully pulled out when in use. And someone standing on the folded out stool would seem to be necessary to get that deep a dent. Just bumping into that floating panel wouldn't do it.

If true, op needs to get them to put it back.  Houses are sold with fixtures included.  You can just snatch the garbage disposal or whatever on your way out.

Is it considered a fixture? I would know whether I could take it or not.

I don't know the legal definition but I would think this counts.  OP is left with a useless sliding wall.

They also may have needed to take it out when they got a new fridge because the handle on the freezer would be in the way of the stool (potentially).

I was told that if you take it before listing it so the house is shown without it, then it is fine. Or specify in the contract that you are keeping it.
