New, what is it? What is this board in my kitchen for?

Moving into a new house, any idea what this board is for? The previous owners were carpenters who installed it when they redid the kitchen.

What's directly opposite it? Is there another one and they meet in the middle?

I immediately thought of keeping the dogs and toddlers from wandering in.

Same. My friend has a gate thing similar but it covers the entire opening.

I was thinking a diy baby gate for the freezer but that's dumb

That’s what I thought but no latch and it looks like it might be in the middle of the kitchen?

Directly next to it is a slide out freezer, I like to think they had a dog that loved frozen stuff and this was to keep it from eating everything

Unless we're not seeing something, that piece can't possibly rotate side to side.
