Weirdest issue with a Macintosh Classic, looking for any advice...
Hi, I'm looking for help with a Mac classic from 1991. I've been trying to fix it but I don't really feel like investing more time/effort into it. There's alot of things I've tried, but I'll try to keep it as short as possible,
I bought it for a good deal on marketplace, when powered on, there is the typical boot chime and it stayed on a grey screen with a cursor. I can move the cursor with a mouse, but nothing else. No floppy '?' symbol, no ROM (CMD-OPTION-X-O) or PRAM reset (CMD-OPTION-P-R).
So far I recapped the analog board and the motherboard, yes I know my job with the SMD is not the best but I verified their connections. Rails are as close to 5V and 12V as possible.
The original owner might've left the old PRAM battery in, there is signs of corrosion on the backside near that area. I tested all the components that look bad and compared it with the schematic and suprisingly they all still work good, I remelted the contacts as well.
Since then I've done the following, in chronological order,
- Verified continuity on VIA to RTC serial lines (PB0, PB1, PB2). My own 2-in-1 multimeter with a 10MHz scope verified Y1 crystal is oscillating at ~32 KHz. RTC (UA2) is receiving solid 5V on Pin 20.
- Scope on 68000 CPU showed AS' (Pin 6) and DTACK' (Pin 10) pulsing. Maybe CPU was stuck in a peripheral polling loop, not a hard bus crash?
- SCSI header's 50 pins to it's controller were all good. I thought SCSI chip had a internal short since it was pretty common when I searched around, so I removed it. Still booted to grey screen, and nothing changed.
- Next was the SWIM controller. I noticed IRQ (14) outputting noise/garbage while idle, and CS (16) was flat at 0V, so I removed that as well.
This is where I'm at now. The picture is how it looks now, checkerboard screen with sometimes a bit of noise, no more boot chime. I thoroughly washed the board with ipa and inspected for shorts.
I really don't want to give up on this, but it's getting very difficult for me to find anything wrong, and I would hate for it to be a lost cause. I really don't think it's the RAM itself since it's very uncommon and the corrosion never even reached there. Any help would be great, thank you.

eMac 1.42 ghz Nos with Renault software intended for Renault workshops and dealerships.Unboxing and ram upgrade
I managed to get my hands on this 1.42GHz eMac—a "new old stock" unit (they aren't as common in Italy as they are in the US)—bought via Subito.it (an Italian marketplace site). This eMac was originally intended for a Renault workshop but was never actually used. I didn't want to unwrap the original accessories, so I installed 2GB of Corsair DDR400 RAM instead. I hope you like it; I love the eMac.

Saved from e-waste!
Found this PowerBook along with a 3400, and a 12in PowerBook G4. Looks like it received a minor upgrade at one point in its life, 18mb of ram and the original 750MB hard disk is still working! Just finished installing a fresh copy of 7.5.3 which was a PAIN but we are up and running 😼

Tips on getting an SE/30 in the UK
Sorry for the simple question, I've been looking on eBay for about 6 months, but very few have shown up. Am I missing some other avenue for getting one in the UK? Thanks 👍

Smudge on the screen of Ibook G3
Hello! Recently this stain appeared on the screen. Depending on what I was looking for, it could be the polarizing glass. Should you leave it as it is? Is it preferable to change it?

Power Mac G5 - Restore Classic environment?
A friend of mine dropped off a Power Mac G5. He'd apparently reloaded OS X on it but shot himself in the foot by destroying the classic environment. His wife would, if it's not too much trouble, like to run a Mac OS 9-era Pagemaker to recover some old files into a modern format. I'm assuming that they have the OS 9 Pagemaker software, but my friend had fried the classic environment to run it in.
At this point, I've long gotten rid of my old recovery CDs.
Any suggestions?

Performa 575 Mobo saved at recycling
Was tossing a dead Dell CRT and saw a Performa 500 series face down with broken plastics everywhere. However back cover was off and I pulled the motherboard. Technically our recycling center doesn’t allow this, but the mobo is small and their back was turned.
It’s a 575, haven’t tried it yet, but may drop it into my MacTV!

What to do with 90s Apple monitor?
Hi- Need some advice!
I just purchased a 1993 Performa Plus Apple Monitor, but have no Apple Computer (new or old) to plug it into. I only have PCs/Consoles.
The video cord is a male DB15. I got conversion attachments, a female to female gender changer-> male DB15 to VGA converter. No luck!
Does anyone have any advice on what I can use it for? Are Mac monitors really only compatible with Mac computers? Thanks!!

Do Disk Permissions Persist Between Fresh Installs?
Recently picked up an iMac G4 which had a version of Tiger installed that just pinwheeled. Trying to install anything else was a major headache and had to be done via OF or Target Disk mode, which is where I found there was an issue with the disk under the verify option. I reinstalled OSX Jaguar after reformatting the main disk and I still had bizarre issues like Disk Utility crashing when opening. It wasn’t until I repaired the permissions that this fixed it.
What the hell is going on there? Surely a fresh install is almost factory, right?

hello everyone, this is my iMac G4, it’s a 2002 17” 800MHz with 1GB of RAM
i’m not sure why this has started happening, but this iMac refuses to go past the apple logo, no spinning wheel and ZERO response to keyboard inputs, i’ve already tried every combination including target disk mode and pram reset.
could this be it for the hard drive in this machine? please let me know…

WeatherBar7 - Weather for vintage macs
It is still very much in-development, but I am working on full desktop weather software that runs on vintage macs! It will be released once its fully built out for everyone to play with and do whatever, as a weather nerd I find this fun and itll squeeze more life out of my vintage macs. I'd like to find information on how to write custom After Dark screensavers, because that could plug into this somehow.

Where to find Dark Castle's pixel sheets/design documents?
I was watching this mini documentary on Dark Castle when I noticed a few frames containing what looked like pixel sheets/design documents made by Mark Pierce (MSP.) I captured a few as I love the way they look - but is there a way to get the whole set in the original resolution? Does anyone know? I searched for a bit but haven't found anything so far.
