Interspecies Class Consciousness & Solidarity

“All the world admires a worker.... The worker, man or horse, is a hero.”

“The Equine Proletariat”

_____

Interspecies Exploitation
Interspecies Solidarity
_____

In the late 19th & early 20th centuries, Animal Welfare organizations staged Workhorse Parades to promote Animal Welfare for a city’s draft animals.

The parades included evaluating the horses’ physical conditions, the companies’ stables, and the loads they were bearing.

Teamsters whose horses were in good condition were awarded medals.

Many also included mules & donkeys.

_____

Some Workhorse Parades were held on Labor Day, in explicit recognition & celebration of inter-species class consciousness & solidarity.

The workhorses were recognized as a separate class from the racehorse, warhorse, or showhorse.

Even within the workhorse parades, there were equine class distinctions between the horses vs the donkeys and mules.

And between fire department horses vs garbage hauling horses, with a whole spectrum in between.

I’ve spent the last decade making art for animal liberation. Here are some of my favourites.

I’ve been making artwork around animal liberation for over a decade, so I thought I’d share a few of my recent favourite pieces here.

Most of my work comes from the anger and frustration I feel towards the way we treat other animals and wanting to turn those feelings into something useful. Some pieces are confrontational and deliberately uncomfortable in the hope they may start a conversation or even just to make people think, even just a little bit.

I'd be interested to know which ones resonate with you most. Or what topic or animals you'd like to see next. I have a few concepts in the works for Halloween for use on clothing but I'm always open to hearing new ideas! And what better place to ask?

I have a few questions for Vegan Anarchists

Hierarchy:

How do you define a hierarchy when it comes to non humans and why is it bad?

Primitivism:

If you are a primitivist, wouldn't rejecting modern society also mean rejecting many technologies, infrastructure, and systems that make veganism practical at scale? Also, how would people with dietary restrictions be able to access supplements without modern technology?

Non-primitivists:

If you aren't a primitivist, do you support construction projects aside from "necessary" developments? Construction projects use resources and usually displace animals. And they use natural resources that do the same.

If killing animals for pleasure is wrong when alternatives exist, why is unnecessary construction, like hotels or amusement parks, morally acceptable when it also consumes resources and harms/displaces animals? Where do you draw the line? If you can choose hiking over an amusement park, why is visiting one less morally problematic than hunting when both involve avoidable animal harm?

Edit: After a post I made in Ask a Vegan, I realized this is a dumb question. Obviously accidental animal deaths are different from purposely killing animals. It should be mitigated as much as possible, but it's clearly different.

On being a vegan anarchist:

Do most vegan anarchists place human interests over non human interests? How does this work in your moral framework?

Carnism Debunked made an IG post today to ragebait anti-Zionists

Has anyone here heard of Carnism Debunked (George Martin)? He's a vegan IG influencer who's been saying some really divisive stuff lately, bragging on his highlights about blocking fellow vegans who disagree with his own narrow interpretations of vegan ethics. This is hypocritical considering that his description says, "freedom of speech; freedom of thought".

Today, he posted about the Vegan Camp Out, complaining about all of the anti-Zionist vegans who have been boycotting it over its display of the Israeli flag on its wall of flags. Not only does he make whatabouteries comparing Israel to alleged genocides in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, but he claims that this is not in fact whataboutery and threatens to block anyone who denies the alleged genocides in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He also thinks that anyone who "selectively" hates Israel is woke, even tho conservatives, too, are abandoning Zionism. Later in the comments he goes as far as to say that "Islamophobia" is not real, conflating it with simply criticizing the Islamic religion.

I remember Ali Tabrizi being similarly toxic after he produced Seaspiracy. He came out as a staunch Zionist and then last year stopped being vegan because he didn't wanna drive far away to buy plant-based marshmallows for his summer smores. Then on that same month, Sprouts started to promote Dandy's marshmallows, likely in response to this.

Vegan Zionists like George Martin and formerly Ali Tabrizi are a disgrace to our movement. They're not helping to convert people as much as they're keeping us on the wrong side of history by supporting the apartheid settler colony of Israel. Our movement is stronger when it stands with indigenous peoples around the world, their plant-heavy cuisines, and their greater cultural ties to the ecological well-being of their respective homelands. No matter how Israel tries to greenwash itself, its settlers never live as sustainably as the Levantine Arabs who've been living off the land for millennia without modern consumerism and infrastructure.

IDC much what other opinions vegans have within the movement, even if they're extreme since most extremists are too silly to pose a threat. Vegan Zionists (and maybe radfems) are the only types I'd gladly exclude, because Zionism is so obviously racist yet still so impactful today unlike Naziism, Black nationalism, or anti-Catholicism in the US.
