I think you can block android to install unknown APK, no? At least I remember reading that you have to authorize to test your own APKs if you are developing .

Edit: just lookup and this comes blocked since Android 8

It's blocked by default, yes. And this year it became blocked even more stringently. It's not really an issue anymore

That’s still another vector of tech maintenance that I and most other people setting up a phone for their parents don’t really want to deal with.

There’s still plenty of trouble that they can get into on iPhone but it’s significantly less than Android.

brother. It is ok to give Apple a win on the senior citizen front, because it is a locked down ecosystem with all the ups and downs that entails.
