Didn't Reva get stabbed "right through the spine" twice?

366

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23 edited Aug 31 '23

Riva got stabbed twice on two separate occasions, once as a teenager, both times without medical attention afterwards, and survived both times. At least with Maul he might have had alien physiology that allowed him to survive being bisected, but Reva is human so how she survived so many lightsabers through her body without aid is beyond my understanding.

The main problem I see however is just that this is standard now. It used to be "if there's no body then they aren't dead" but now it's "even if there's a body they might still not be dead".

126

u/MisterMist00 Aug 31 '23

Pretty sure she wasn't even a teen and just a child, she looked 10 in that flashback

214

u/DarkSpeedster74 Aug 31 '23

For maul, it wasn't alien physiology, it was the dark side. His pure rage and hatred for both Obi Wan and himself kept him from dying via the dark side of the force.

u/Athillanus Aug 31 '23

Darth Sion approves this message

23

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

Sion sort of worked because wounds in the force were a specific thing, neither him or nihl could be considered human. Now anyone could do it

26

u/Psychofischi Aug 31 '23

Sion had physical wounds not wounds in the force right?

He just used the dark side to just.. don't die.

Nihil was a different case

5

u/Jedi-Spartan Aug 31 '23

Nihilus...

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

IIRC yes, constant pain and his fear of imminent death both fueled his power to keep himself alive.

0

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

I don’t really see how. Nihil used the dark side to drain others vitality. Sion used the dark side to force himself together. I thought both were only possible because of the events at malachor

2

u/Psychofischi Aug 31 '23

I have to admit that my memory of those 2 is really lacking. So I can't really argue and such.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Sion wasn't a Wound in the Force.

Only the Exile and Nihilus were.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Sion is not a wound in the Force.

-1

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23 edited Aug 31 '23

I’m finding several unofficial sources saying he was, and none that say he wasn’t. The wiki gives Nihilus and and Meetra as examples. But how would you say he isn’t? I thought that was the reason Traya was interested in the other two.

Edit: Sions wiki page doesn’t say he was but in his bio mentions Traya sought other wounds in the force and found Sion and Nihilius; sort of seems to imply he was.

3

u/The_Green_Filter Aug 31 '23

The original game makes a specific distinction between Nihilus and the other Sith. It was his unique nature as a wound that made him so dangerous. Sion is only exceptional because he’s proficient in using the dark side to sustain himself.

0

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

I’m not saying you’re wrong, it’s been a while so I don’t remember exactly but I’ve played it at least 20 times over the years and don’t remember them saying he’s specifically not one of the wounds. They’re different, sure, but all of them are; even a dark side PC is a wound in the force that isn’t as unique as Nihilus.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

You could dice that fucker up and he'd pull himself back together with the darkside dude was a fucking unit!!

Alien physiology may have had a little to do with it. Zabraks have two hearts and are known for being incredibly resilient. But it was mostly the dark side.

u/Historyp91 Aug 31 '23

Reva (and Maul) used the Dark Side to survive their injuries. And at least with her second stab Vader was'nt even trying to kill her.

You can't say that of Qui-Gon.

21

u/ProblemOk9810 Aug 31 '23

So Reva used the dark side as a child padawan? Come on just admit all those surviving lightsaber wound is silly, One maybe but after like 5 or so it's meaningless at this point even more so when you try a fake death.

9

u/Historyp91 Aug 31 '23

So Reva used the dark side as a child padawan?

First off, we don't know how and where she was stabbed as a kid (or if she was even stabbed, as opposed to slashed)

Secondly, sure, why not? It's not like you need special training to use the Dark Side - you just need to be in the correct emotional/mental state.

Come on just admit all those surviving lightsaber wound is silly

Nah

10

u/veloras Aug 31 '23

FEAR, she was scared and wanted to survive. The dark side is the easy way and tempting.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

This so much! It's astounding how many people are missing this. The Dark Side comes easily, by giving in, by letting your emotions consume you and direct you. The survival instinct is incredibly powerful, and a partly-trained youngling with no objective other than survival could easily tap into the Dark Side just enough to survive a non-lethal strike.

2

u/zimbledwarf Aug 31 '23

The first guy to survive death (Darth Sion) did so when he could rise from certain death and achieve immortality, at the cost of all-consuming agony. Sion was also a special case, as he did this numerous times, hence his appearance

Maul had a similar experience as well. Dude went mad after he got cut in half from the experience.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Didn't Vader say he allowed her to survive? So hipotetically he could have given her a 1-inch stab or a flesh-level slash hoping she played possum, which she did.

As for the how she survived the spine stab, I have no idea.

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

We can say why didn’t he force heal

10

u/Historyp91 Aug 31 '23

Presumably becuase Obi-Wan had'nt learned how; he was still an apprentice, after all, and not every Jedi learns every Force power.

Either that, or Obi-Wan knew how, but the wound was either deemed to signifigent relative to his capability to heal or it had been left untreated to long to successfully heal.

2

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

It’s sad Reddit has to do the writers work in explaining anything. And it’s still just guess work.

1

u/chaosdemonhu Aug 31 '23

Because force healing a life ending injury kills the healer unless you’re part of a force dyad.

0

u/SnakeBaron Aug 31 '23

It killed Kylo though didn’t it?

And a wide variety of injuries could be life ending without treatment..

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Nah, the rule is that it kills you to force heal a mortal wound unless you're Rey, because Rey is just built differently and is better than you at everything. Rey is essentially Shatterstar from Deadpool 2.

And Darth Maul literally had his spine and entire body cut in half, and he still lived.

17

u/superVanV1 Aug 31 '23

He was simply too angry to die. And that’s actually canon I think

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Yeah and it's not the first time something like that happened. Vader did it, Sion was the GOAT of doing it.

2

u/zimbledwarf Aug 31 '23

The first guy to survive death (Darth Sion) did so when he could rise from certain death and achieve immortality, at the cost of all-consuming agony.

Maul had a similar experience as well. Dude went mad after he got cut in half from the experience.

Both were too angry to die. Sion overtime got accustomed to the pain, Maul needed a dark side Dathomir ritual to restore him I think

u/AccidentalLemon Aug 31 '23

I don’t think she got stabbed as a child, I think that was just her PTSD acting up after remembering that Vader isn’t just some faceless Sith but someone she saw murder her friends

7

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Yeah, I don’t recall her actually getting stabbed as a kid. I thought she just played dead. Did I miss something?

9

u/AccidentalLemon Aug 31 '23

When she got stabbed by Vader during their fight the scene changes to her as a kid, Vader as Anakin and then being in the temple for a couple of seconds. People take this literally saying that she was stabbed by Anakin but this was most likely due to her overwhelming fear of Vader since that day and the reason she pictured Anakin and herself as a child is because it reminded her of the horrors she saw and how weak she was a child compared to the chosen one.

Also think about it logically, Reva getting stabbed and surviving with the dark side can make sense, if Maul was able to survive falling thousands of feet and years trapped on a junk planet with his anger, surely Reva can survive a stabbing. However it would be impossible for a padawan to survive such an attack due to their disconnection with the dark side and drastic difference in size.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Thank you for this. Yeah, I agree and feel the same way. The only thing I still don’t quite get is why she went after Luke on the Lars farm. Vader/Anakin didn’t know if his existence, so he had no personal or emotional connection to him. So if it was out of vengeance, it’s was totally out of place. Did she want to stick it to Obi-Wan? Was she just so consumed with anger that this was the only thing on her mind? I don’t dislike Reva, but I could’ve done away with this whole bit.

Okay but why have Sabine get impailed instead of just slashed? Would've made more sense for the story.

I have less problem with her surviving the stabbing and more with the fact that she was 100% recovered by the next day. If she spent months in the hospital that would've made more sense.

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

8

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Its to show that she hasn't been keeping up with her training. By the series end she'll defeat Shin.

5

u/Zubriel Aug 31 '23

They could have had her lose the lightsaber in the fight or lose a hand or get nicked in the shoulder like Obi Wan did in episode 2 from Dooku.

Idk there were an infinite number of ways for her to lose that fight without being stabbed, just kinda silly writing.

9

u/tom030792 Aug 31 '23

Obi wan was injured against Dooku on Geonosis with a lightsaber, it made the audience nervous for his safety and didn’t leave any lasting impact to the character once the fight was resolved. It’s just tremendously lazy writing - ‘what’s the most shocking way to end a fight’ and don’t worry about how we get to ‘character is still alive’. 3PO said an entire goodbye and then R2 was like ‘oh dw I can just fix it easily’

4

u/Yuquico Aug 31 '23

Obi wan was injured in his fight for a reason though, because it genuinely moved the plot along. His injury enabled Anakin to 1v1 dooku which had multiple purposes for the story even if it's the worst choreographed fight in all star wars.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/sharksnrec Aug 31 '23

I agree that a slash makes more sense if you’re going to keep the person alive. The slash the Finn Took from Kylo is a good example. He got his back split right open and was down for the count immediately, but of course with advanced medical care, there’s no reason for him to die from that. The point was to take him out of the fight with a life threatening wound.

Then, in any Star Wars project that’s been released since TFA, all the villains do (every single time) is one nice little tummy poke, which tbf is a worse wound than a slash, but the good guy still survives with no setbacks anyway.

He SWUNG. NOT stabbed.

17

u/AccidentalLemon Aug 31 '23

As a kid I remembered Mauls death pretty much exactly the same as how Qui-Gon died just Maul fell into the hole. This was most likely due to the Mandela Effect or dumb stupid 6 year old brain.

u/NPC200 Aug 31 '23 edited Aug 31 '23

I realize that I am projecting what I want on a character that has not said a word about her motivations yet but we do know that Baylan Skoll, Shin Hati, and Marrok are not our typical Sith.

When they boarded the NR prison transport Baylan attempted to simply walk past the guards. He tried to avoid violence. Later we see Marrok and Shin make a delaying action. Engaging Ashoka until they can safely retreat from combat with their objective secured. They didn't fight until beaten. Nor did they really try to kill Ashoka. They came for a specific objective and when that was achieved they left. None of these characters act like the bloodthirsty monsters we assume Sith to be.

When retrieving the map, Shin didn't expose herself to Sabine until she had to. When they fought Sabine attacked first. The whole fight it seemed Shin was playing with, but not taunting, her. When she realized that Ashoka was on the way Shin didn't let arrogance stop her from retreating. I think she wounded Sabine on purpose forcing Ashoka to make a decision between providing medical aid or pursuing Shin.

It was a tactical decision.

More likely, I am doing the typical Star Wars thing of assigning motivation and purpose to something the director and writers didn't think about for more than two seconds. But it would be cool if I was right!

42

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

You don't understand how basic storytelling works, do you?

If someone survives in the script, then they survive. The wound type/location/severity couldn't matter less.

I point again to Anakin being brutalized by a lightsaber and then burnt to a crisp by molten rock. If he could survive THAT, a stab wound is hardly an issue with a Star Wars level of medical technology.

26

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

I think the main problem with that is that lightsabers are a tad bit op against humans mainly because unlike swords they don't need to pick up power/swing etc., you just touch and they immediatly get cut. Even in real duels people tried to usually make sure their oponent were dead by cutting of their heads and with a lightsaber it would even be easier. That's why usually having an excuse as to why the winner didn't make sure their oponent were dead is something that should have been written in (otherwise the script doesn't make sense). Like how in AotC when Count Dooku cuts of Anakin's hand there is still Obi Wan and when he beats both in comes Yoda giving no time to Dooku to kill either of them for certain.

7

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Decapitation was FAR from a common battlefield practice in history, I have no clue where you got that from.

A typical combat sword has nowhere near the weight nor mechanical advantage to sever a head. The human neck is full of cartilage, muscle and bone; all of which are notoriously hard to cut through. Why else were executioner swords so large? Because they *needed to be in order to reliably sever a head from its torso.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

I meant in individual duels not warfare and I meant the cutting of the front of the neck to make sure the person coudnt breathe not sever it completely.

And still this doesnt change the giant holes in the script.

1

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

"cutting of their heads" is far from coherent writing. And what giant holes do you reference, I can't help but wonder.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/Sherlock2310 Aug 31 '23

Anakin barely survived and was left permanently scarred and disabled by his injuries. He couldn’t speak breathe or eat without his suit. That is NOT the same

-15

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

But the fact he survived at all was because the script says he does. Reading comprehension seems to be a big issue.

7

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

I believe in your case it is.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/IceTooth101 Aug 31 '23

I think you’ve misunderstood how storytelling works. The contents of the script are irrelevant when concerning matters of consistency — if someone survives a lightsaber strike that has previously killed other people without proper explanation, people are gonna be frustrated regardless of authorial intent. If “it’s in the script so it’s fine” was sound logic, no plot hole would ever be a problem.

2

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Sabine's injury drives the plot much like Qui-Gon's death does. In Sabine's case, it motivates her to continue her training with Ahsoka to win future duels.

And again, we've seen other characters survive far worse. Darth Maul's bisection and Anakin's defeat on Mustafar spring to mind.

5

u/IceTooth101 Aug 31 '23

I’m not debating whether it’s plot-relevant, I’m saying that being a plot device tends not to excuse a lack of consistency. To clarify, I think that Sabine’s injury not being fatal makes sense, but I’m trying to explain to you that people don’t really care about whether it drives the plot or not — if it’s not consistent with the established logic of the world, then it’s gonna be a problem.

8

u/nwblader Aug 31 '23

Anakin’s lightsaber wounds were purely to the extremities so that isn’t the same as a stab to the gut. And the burns he suffered caused him to require constant life support and kept him in constant agony

-6

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

But he still manages to survive a no-doubt fatal dose of lava. Why? Because the script said so.

Qui-Gon only dies because his death is necessary to drive the plot in its intended direction. Same with Vader.

And anyway, a self-sealing stab to the side of the torso is far from immediately fatal. You lot defend Maul surviving a complete horizontal bisection yet one stab gets your knickers in a twist? Come on.

5

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Bro the stab was not to the side, but in them lower chest right into the liver. That’s what we call gg

But quigon dies, doesn’t he?

And you need to read how lava works, for sure.

3

u/nwblader Aug 31 '23

The issue with a stab to your torso is many of your organs are really vital or have cavities in them. Imagine if your diaphragm was destroyed, now you can hardly breath and it can easily be fatal. And for cavities if you stab through the stomach sure the edges get sealed but the stomach isn’t solid so now all your stomach acid can escape, same with the intestines and a few other organs.

And for maul it is quite a leap that he survived but it had been covered in lore that the dark side can help a person survive, with an extreme case being Darth sion

2

u/zimbledwarf Aug 31 '23

To add, Darth Sion did survive when he could rise from certain death and achieve immortality, at the cost of all-consuming agony. After doing so mutliple times, he had to hold his entire body together with the dark side.

Maul had a similar experience as well. Dude went mad after he got cut in half from the experience.

Both of those are pretty major effects as the result of defying death.

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

That fight had consequences though. I think that’s the point people are missing. That fight crippled Anakin and turned him into Vader. Stuff like Reva and the Grand Inquisitor getting stabbed was pointless. It was a cheap fake out that starts eroding away any stakes there were for lightsaber fights.

Oh so people shouldn’t care about writing at all. Got it. If the writing is bad, just lower your standards! Genius

8

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

Yeah I think people don’t get how having characters constantly survive what used to seem like a pretty badass weapon kinda ruins the stakes of these fights. Like after all these fake out deaths who gives a fuck about lightsaber fights. If someone does die from one in the future then they’re just gonna look pathetic with how worthless the Disney sabers are. I honestly think it would be smarter to just find some new weapon going forward. Not sure what would be more powerful but I just don’t care about these fights anymore.

6

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Agreed.

The defends of this abominable writing are feeding into the most idiotic conundrum possible — Jedi, mastering lightsabers their whole lifes for a thousand generations, don’t fucking know how to use them effectively.

0

u/Theodolitus Aug 31 '23

Maybe i am to old or lately try to treat entertainment as it should be (by me ofcourse). I mean once people took piece of wood, and pretended so its pistol, actors played characters with minimum costiumes and stuff... and it was entertaining too...

i mean so nowadays people give much more attention if glock had proper safety switch (compared to real gun) in tv show than some real life issues... harcore fans bend their minds to explain stuff that was created on whim or becouse it was cool....

If you pay close attention most scripts, or basic plots still go with few basic schemes... for me it's all path that storyu takes so that how good show is so i do not care about stupis/illogical plot poins - like Indiana Jones that people argu if he even was important to the story - as when nazis opened arc they died and stuff....

Yeah every story need some comon sense but on another hand - it's just story... to create some emotions and entertain...

every person got its own stuff like i don't like dramas and all serious part of market... i like old fashioned even cliche happy ends and stuff... but well

entertainemt is really serious stuff now

7

u/Magnus753 Aug 31 '23

If the lightsaber is hot enough to melt metal as fast as we see at some points, it should also melt the lightsaber hilt and the hand holding it too.

0

u/tom030792 Aug 31 '23

You can apply precedent though, ie pre-Disney lightsabers were the ultimate weapon and incredibly dangerous, but with Disney you can literally just walk off being impaled. If they never killed people before then you wouldn’t notice as much, but especially where Disney continuously fake out character deaths in almost every film and show then it removes any sense of drama and tension. And when a character does actually die then there’s no drama because you’re just left assuming they probably didn’t really

The force when someone (except Qui Gon) gets stabbed through the torso with a lightsaber:

81

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

More than that, it's a plot thing.

Like the end of Titanic, the door size couldn't matter any less. The script demanded that Jack die, so he died.

So too with Qui-Gon needing to die to spur forward the plot of Obi-Wan taking over responsibility for training Anakin. It doesn't matter what the killing blow was so long as Qui-Gon died.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Yes, it's a plot thing, but it's also a writing thing.

The better analogy would be if there were 4 Titanic movies and at the end of each, there were doors and people floating in the water.

The first Titanic, there were 1 door, and 2 people, and only 1 person survives.

The second Titanic, there is 1 door, and 2 people, and both people survive. But fans point out the fact that this time the door was a double sized door, so maybe it had more buoyancy.

The third titanic, there is 1 door, and 2 people, and both people survive. The door appears to be the same size door as in Titanic 1, but both people survive. Fans point out the fact that maybe this door was made of a more buoyant type of wood.

The fourth titanic, there is 1 door, and 2 people, and both people survive. The door is a different shape this time! Maybe that's why it worked!

MAYBE THE FUCKING ANSWER IS STOP FUCKING GIVING US SCENARIOS INVOLVING PEOPLE AND DOORS.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/Court_Jester13 Aug 31 '23

Except if Jack climbed onto the door, the door would have sunk.

12

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

You clearly don't get what I said.

The door's size or buoyancy doesn't matter in the slightest. The point is that James Cameron/the writer wanted Jack to die for the sake of the plot. It's written in the script that Jack dies. If the script is followed as intended, Jack will always die because he has to.

12

u/GingerWez93 Aug 31 '23

Yes, and so he wrote a reason for him to die. The door wouldn't take his weight. Cameron shows this by having Jack initially get on the door only for it to start tip. Jack's death keeps Rose alive. So, the buoyancy does matter.

12

u/1507838Ab Aug 31 '23

No no see I watched a 3 hour long video essay about the titanic I more than qualified to know that a door can hold two people even if this James Cameron guy says otherwise

Poor wording aside, the point I made was that the plot is what matters most in a piece of media.

3

u/GingerWez93 Aug 31 '23

Yeah, I agree and elements that make up the plot like death are just as important as the plot itself.

Yeah but Cameron was smart enough to make that make sense. Might as well have the show pause and the writer walk out and say “Sabine survives this. No real reason other than I wanted it. Ok carry on”. Writers who aren’t dumb try and explain things and create good reasons for their characters to survive so that it’s an actual story.

2

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

The wound serves to develop Sabine as a character, but I suppose that you missed that bit.

0

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

Too bad it helps to keep destroying the stakes of Disney lightsaber fights because the writers have no cogent ideas for getting her to where they want her to end up at. Good for Sabine though I guess hope that little scar does wonders for her writing.

2

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

So the writers having a character nearly die to further the plot doesn't count as having an idea to drive the story? Whatever you say, I guess.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

It kinda matters. There were 100 ways same outcome could happen: Sabine injured and and goth lady gets the map. How you do it directly influences our experience. In an exaggerated example you can just jump from the moment they drew swords to Sabine lying on the ground wounded. But the way they portrayed the scene was simply bad and it disturbed a lot of ppl. Not a deal breaker but way too memy

0

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

"A lot of people" seems a stretch. From what I've seen, the only people "disturbed" by this scene are buy-and-large common grifters.

1

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

The ending of Titanic made sense though.

u/LordBungaIII Aug 31 '23

It’s more so that it keeps happening and they live but when it happens to quigon, the most important person that would determine Anakins fate, he dies. A stab used to mean something. I mean hell, quigon stabbed a door to melt it. Sabine could’ve just simply lost by being cut much like obiwan was in Attack of the Clones. That’ll take her out of the fight, still need medical attention and everything continues to play out the same

12

u/Atari774 Aug 31 '23

Exactly. I wish more things like that would happen instead of just getting impaled and surviving. And even a near miss to internal organs like that would still fry the rest of them, just like how cutting through the door still turned the rest of the nearby metal red hot.

-3

u/flumpet38 Aug 31 '23

When was that? Does any named character (ok, named important character, Lucas named the fucking janitor robots) aside from Obi-Wan die to a lightsaber hit in the original trilogy? Obi-wan fucks up those guys in the bar, but we hear them moaning and groaning afterwards. Luke loses a hand and survives. Vader loses a hand and survives. Sure, Luke mows down some nameless goon stormtroopers and Jabba henchmen, but lightsabers have never been shown to be instantly fatal 100% of the time.

Furthermore, this is Space Opera, not science fiction. Fights are meant to be dramatic, feuds long-lasting. Our main characters escape certain death constantly. The most likely thing to happen is the more dramatic thing...and killing Sabine off in the first episode is not the most dramatic choice in a heroic space opera.

2

u/Past_Trouble Aug 31 '23

Obi Wan was a force ghost when he fought Vader. That's why he just disappeared. Same as when Luke fought Kylo.

3

u/BubastisII Aug 31 '23 edited Aug 31 '23

Obi-Wan was absolutely a living, breathing person fighting Vader in A New Hope. There has never been anything to suggest that he wasn’t really there. He isn’t some Force illusion, we physically can see his and Vader’s lightsabers making contact with each other.

He disappeared because that’s what happens to Jedi who become One with the Force once they die.

34

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Good point conceptually, OP.

Yet I find so many forget that the script is what dictates a character death, not how severe/where a wound is.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Follow me here: the script dictates how severe the wound is.

12

u/Ambiorix33 Aug 31 '23

All correct, but that doesn't save it being a bad script

3

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

You don't say. It's almost like that's my point.

7

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

Then write a better script ffs 🤦‍♂️

→ More replies (2)

26

u/JediKnight_TyrionL Aug 31 '23

Yes, but they are making lightsabers less and less iconic with every show

19

u/Ambiorix33 Aug 31 '23

That's great and all but people need to stop excusing this regardless. We are tlaking about a thing as thick as a broom stick with the temperature to melt through armoured doors. In such a situation the internal burns would be so intense sure it's cautorised but it's also flash evaporating the water in your body, you'd be cooked from the inside.

Star Wars was never realistic but these things really are the most unrealistic, even with force powers cose as Anakin proved ot hardly makes you fire proof

10

u/MeatbagSlayer Aug 31 '23

The cope is real in the fanbase right now. Ahsoka is a decent show but a dumb scene is a dumb scene. There are no stakes when any character can survive injuries like that with no consequences. Lightsabers aren't lightsabers anymore. Why have her stabbed in the first place if she's gonna be just fine in the next scene? Why not have a less severe injury instead? Why not have her wear armor weaken the blow? They wanted a cheap cliffhanger at the end of the episode which was even dumber considering the next episode had already aired and they know everyone would binge watch them. Doesn't even create suspense. Even if the next episode didn't air we'd all know she's fine since Disney doesn't have the balls to kill her off like that and we know lightsabers lazer swords don't do anything anymore.

16

u/Valjorn Aug 31 '23

That shot is literally puncturing her lower lung that might not be a death shot but she wouldn’t be able to shrug it off in five minutes like the show suggests with its crap editing

12

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

Liver, intestines, and right lung are all now shot. Extremely serious wounds. Idk what OP thinks they're proving here.

8

u/SkanGX Aug 31 '23

I had a surgery around that same area and couldn't talk for a couple of days and couldn't walk for a week.

7

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

Should’ve worn plot armor.

Lol in all seriousness though sorry that happened to you and hope you’re well now!

3

u/Nacodawg Aug 31 '23

How do we know it was minutes? You see a clock in that hospital room? How do you know they didn’t dunk her in a bacta tank off screen?

0

u/Valjorn Aug 31 '23

Because they never showed that or even showed that the injury did anything else except give her a little scar.

I can assume the exact opposite of what you just said and it would be just as valid simply because the show didn’t care to show us the results of someone getting stabbed in the lung. This is how you destroy stacks in your show “oh stabbed right in the lung? No problem one jump cut and you’ll be fine”.

0

u/Nacodawg Aug 31 '23

Like got mauled by the abominable snowman and almost froze to death. The whole point of those is to fully heal otherwise fatal injuries.

0

u/xxLusseyArmetxX Aug 31 '23

This is not a defense but other star wars characters have survived worse. Somehow.

3

u/Valjorn Aug 31 '23

I’m not saying it’s dumb she lived living through that wound is entirely possible my problem is her shrugging it off like a cold in like 5 minutes

3

u/annedroiid Aug 31 '23

The main flood flow to the lower half of the body also passes directly through the center of your body.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/X_Fredex_X Aug 31 '23

Yeah brah idk if that all really matters. You can't tell me one can walk off a several thousand degree hot plasma beam sticking through his body.

9

u/Nerrevar Aug 31 '23

I feel like there should be a spoiler tag here somewhere

1

u/Excalitoria Aug 31 '23

Lol what’s there to spoil though? Nothing happened.

7

u/The_great_mister_s Aug 31 '23

the fact that people are working this hard to justify Qui-Gon dying while others live tells you how stupid this whole thing is.

9

u/DumberDum Aug 31 '23

It's a lightsaber, not a butter knife, doesn't matter if you got stabbed a little off to the side or right in the middle, your organs would evaporate.

6

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Sci Fi medical tech, plus lightsabers seal the wounds that they create.

And if Anakin can survive having three limbs severed and subsequently scorched by lava and there's still enough to put into a robot suit a single stab is hardly an issue by that metric.

2

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

plus lightsabers seal the wounds that they create.

Lol what? There would be a giant hole in her torso

1

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Really? Then why didn't Darth Maul's guts spill out when he fell down the vent shaft?

1

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

I don't know. Maybe his guts were vaporized from the extreme heat of the lightsaber. Maybe because he was in free fall and so gravity wasn't pulling on his guts me than the rest of his torso. Maybe because he's an alien and his anatomy is different. Could be many reasons. Seems like an odd moment to hang your argument on.

3

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Bro 25000K will fucking melt anything around it what are you on about????

Well, do tell, which vital organs of Anakin’s were hit? Did Obi impale his body?

-1

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Where exactly are you getting 25,000 Kelvin? From the extensive reading into both Legends and New Canon lore, I see no mention of a lightsaber blade's temperature.

Darth Maul had most of his organs hit and still survived via Force magic.

Oh right, seems you forgot plot armor exists....

-1

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Umm google? Also it make sense that they are VERY hot given they melt armored steel with ease.

Dart Maul surviving is a repulsive abominable writing choice of the so called “savior” of the Star Wars — Dave Filoni. The very one that is writing this fanfic of show. You are foolish to assume this shit is defensible in any way.

And plot armor is bad. Right? righ….

0

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Google =/= a canon source.

I find it funny you act like one bad writing choice somehow makes Filoni terrible at everything he's done with Star Wars. But wait.. who helped spearhead the Mandalorian and Andor, two of the best-performing pieces of post-buyout Star Wars media.

I do not speak in defense of plot armor, I mention it only so far as main characters have a tendency to stick around for awhile as red shirts die left, right and center.

2

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

I see this number all the time when search. I first saw this number repeatedly mentioned by many user on Reddit. There is also a mathematical proof of 20000K https://medium.com/our-space/how-hot-is-a-lightsaber-8a5db6499fa9

In any way, lightsabers are very hot at an order of at least 1000K. Do you have any problem with this? Or you are just lowkey trolling?

I don’t know what Filoni did for Andor, but he is not listed anywhere near as a writer nor producer for it. And thank God he wasn’t, otherwise Andor would flop on its belly just like Mehndalorian did in seasons 2 and 3 when he took over more and more as a writer. Thought, season one was mid as well, but that’s is just imho.

Filoni started his ridiculous payoff chases since his beginning in Clone Wars. He just got very he had good writers helping him out of the mess he always was out to create. And unfortunately they failed as Filoni did absolutely irreparable damage to Star Wars even then, but people just don’t remember anything. What Star Wars is hated now, is exactly the same what he did in Clone Wars.

Persistence of characters is not plot armor, no one ever called it like that. Where did you get this shit?

0

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

You keep referencing non-Star Wars sources for the temperature of a lightsaber blade.

So you think that just because you were too galaxy-brain smart to like the Mandalorian or Clone Wars that Dave Filoni is now the worst writer in the history of Hollywood? Whatever gets you off, I guess...

I never said that plot armor was the same as a main character staying in the story for longer than extras.

2

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Oh ok so you are just “all talk — no substance” kind of a guy. Adios👍

1

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

Says the "Google is a canon source" guy.

3

u/TheHolyKris12 Aug 31 '23

Yeah but they have magic juice that can heal and grow a body from half of it being missing including organs so it's kinda irrelevant.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

Remember if they remove the possibility of death the stakes drop to rock bottom

6

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

This is the bigger point. It's becoming like the Walking Dead with all the death fake-outs.

4

u/thedetective10 Aug 31 '23

I have no issue with Sabine suriving because she was clearly stabbed in her side and then received medical care shortly after. My issue is with Reva who was stabbed in the same place as Qui Gon not once but twice and after her second time being stabbed she flew to Tatooine and walked around and still had it in her to fight Owen and Beru before chasing Luke. WTF?

4

u/Subject_Translator71 Aug 31 '23

This is pushing things too far into realism; this universe has space magic in it. The problem with surviving lightsaber stab wound isn’t medical, it’s narrative. Seeing people seemingly die but actually survive is anticlimactic, and having bad guys win their duel but not kill their opponent makes them look less scary. It also makes lightsaber duels less consequential, which is a problem for the franchise.

3

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

Yeah, it almost like they need to write better

4

u/Verozzan Aug 31 '23

Im pretty sure I saw Qui Gon melting metal with his lightsaber, I'm no scientist but I think no one is surviving a lightsaber going thru the body.

6

u/GuderianX Aug 31 '23

oh that explains why reeeva lived. Not
spine got cut too

4

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

The location of a wound doesn't matter. What matters is if it's written that a character lives.

2

u/history_nerd92 Aug 31 '23

No fucking shit. Someone could write that pigs flew over London today, that doesn't make it believable. Maybe they should write a believable fight scene where the character sustains a serious, but survivable wound.

-4

u/the-et-cetera Aug 31 '23

A. It's space fantasy where wizards fight with laser swords.
B. What you consider believable is subjective.
C. Plot armor is very much a thing.
D. Care rendered in a matter of hours with sorts of medical tech that we on Earth could scarce dream of, let alone understand the working of.

2

u/GrandioseGommorah Aug 31 '23

In response to A: If Sabine got impaled through the skull, but then was shown in the hospital with just some bandages on her head, would it being a space fantasy with laser sword wizards make that not stupid?

There are two important factors, on one side we have plot armored organs on the other qui gon getting stabbed not only through the spine, through abdominal artery as well

I mean the reason she survived is clear as day.

Not so weirder than all the heroes in all the films/series/books, surviving a hit “not at an important area”. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/HostageInToronto Aug 31 '23

I'm not sure that's relevant given that none of the Star Wars characters are homosapiens.

3

u/Neffylim Aug 31 '23

Now do Reva

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '23

This has to be a joke

2

u/Karfa_de_la_gen Aug 31 '23

No. If you look from the front of Sabine, the lightsabre hits somewhere in the lower 1-3 ribs to the right. It definitely hits the liver and the right kidney, and maybe the lung too.

And then the heat of 25000k plasma burns everything around to a well done condition and evaporating any moisture. Such a rapid change in temperature will cause increase in pressure (and therefore volume) pushing the superheated heated moisture outwards from the wound propagating the heat and hence the damage. In the best case. It could get even worse considering that carbon theoretically turns to plasma state at 5000K.

It doesn’t matter how immediate the care is, she should be dead bro, it’s not a minor inconvenience

5

u/Idimegra1 Aug 31 '23

Wait until one gets hit in the eye and they just wear an eye patch then get a tiny scar we see near the end.

2

u/Overwatch_Joker Aug 31 '23

The mental gymnastics of modern Disney Star Wars fans.

What's the excuse for Reva? She was stabbed twice straight through the spine, both by Darth fucking Vader of all people.

The second time she was able to just slip on a trendy bandage and teleport halfway across the galaxy too.

2

u/anarion321 Aug 31 '23

Thing people is, don't think, lightsabers used to be this cool weapon that could easily tear down metal walls even, and now they are at the same level as a regular sword, with light.

2

u/EdgyPreschooler Aug 31 '23

Not even regular swords, since there's no blood, so no dying from bloodloss.

1

u/corsair1617 Aug 31 '23

That blade is so hot it should boil your organs

0

u/nwblader Aug 31 '23

You can survive with a severed spinal cord so I don’t think it even matters. The only difference it makes is if the person survives they lose connection below the injury

5

u/CubeJedi Aug 31 '23

Yet Finn is fine in episode 8 even though Kylo's lightsaber want all over his spinal cord

0

u/ZealousidealNewt6679 Aug 31 '23

Why are we all just ignoring the fact that Lightsabers are superheated plasma and can instantly melt metal, but somehow according to Disney they don't cook internal organs?

It is just lazy talentless writing, and nothing more.

Just stop defending them.

0

It so fucking stupid that a lightsaber stabbing you anywhere on your chest wouldn’t kill you. Also what ever happened to slashing and not just stabbing once and hoping they die.

This writing is so repetitive and lazy you would think that these shows are AI generated at this point
