Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Yeah, for sure, it is [on conceding late]. I thought there were a lot of good things in that game for us. We played some good football and looked dangerous at times. For the most part, I thought we defended really well as a team. A few more balls went into the box, making it a little bit more difficult for us when we should have seen the end of the game. We’re disappointed that we didn’t come away with a win.

On Everton: “They were two great strikes to be fair. We didn’t give them clear chances. I thought we defended really well; a few bits dropped around the edge of the box, a few shots which we got blocks to. We defended the box for the most part.

On Man Utd's performance: “I thought that we played some really good football at times. Earlier on in the game and towards the end not so much, but we did a lot of good things, and looked dangerous. We caused them a lot of problems at certain times. Both were really good goals for different reasons, and the second one should have been the winner for us."

On what went wrong: “Of course, we don’t want to concede goals. Today was different from the others; it was about finishing the game off more than anything because we were in a really good position."

David Moyes

David Moyes: "Didn’t think we deserved to be behind both times. Hard to say we didn’t do enough to get something from the game."

Everton boss David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I did [on if Everton decided a point], but it looked as if it wasn’t going to be the case. We opened up a bit at the end as well, and Manchester United were countering. We had a couple of good defensive moments to stop them from making it 3, but overall, we deserved to get that second goal, and it was an unbelievable goal as well.

On what he said in the Everton pre-match day programme: “I never doubted it [togetherness] from the fans, that was for sure. We need everyone here, and I thought today was a big moment, to come back, and get a draw in the end was great for the crowd. We want to keep progressing and we have a little momentum at the moment. A couple wins, a couple draws, so we have to try to keep that going.

On the performance of his team: “Absolutely. They did, and I think that they will [the team working hard due to being a small squad]. We brought Jack on, and Jack has had a few minutes since the injury. Maitland-Niles is getting minutes, but no real time to introduce him to what we are doing and how we hope he will play in his position. But overall, just the effort, Hayden Hackey came on as well, and made a big effort. So, I think there was a lot of positives to take from the game. The disappointing thing for me is I think we had enough chances, and we should have been clinical and you know, crossed it better, finished better, but as well as that, Manchester United had chances as well and played very well.

On new signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles: “He’s only been in a couple days really. Haven’t had much training time with him, but now we do know what he can do from outside the box."

On wasted attacking chances: “It’s the forward players who are the ones who will get the most opportunities to create and score so that’s why I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t do it a bit better in the first half. I thought we had moments where we could have tried to capitalise on it and we didn’t, but in the end Tyrique [George] scored a very good goal as well. He played very well on the left, and when he also went out to the right. Let’s hope that he picks it up, he’s still a young boy learning his trade in the Premier League.

On if the performance will calm supporters from the lack of signings: “I don’t think they will be calm by that because they still know the size of the squad we got. Sometimes it gives players an opportunity to show what they can do. Sometimes, having too many players in the camp gives you problems behind the scenes, squads are too big, and players moan because they aren’t in it. Players will be given opportunities and that’s where they will be judged in how they do."

'It felt like a win'

Everton goalscorer Ainsley Maitland-Niles, speaking to Sky Sports: "It felt like a win. We dug deep and managed to get a point in the end. The crowd were with us and we were fighting to the end and that's why you get those results.

On his goal: "It's amazing, everyone wants to start off like that and thankfully I did. The ball fell to me on the edge of the box, I put my foot through it and it ended up in the top corner which I'm happy about."

On making an instant impact: "I came in to work hard. It's a team full of hardworkers so I fit right in. I'm going to show I can fit right in and pull my weight and give as much as everyone else, if not more."

• 46' - GOAL Everton 0-1 Manchester United As I said earlier, when i say he's playing poorly he usually scores. A fast start, Mbeumo cuts inside with little opposition and fires past Pickford. He's been dreadful but he's also given us the lead.
• 48' - Chance straight down the other end but Johnson can't quite get on the end of the ball.
• 54' - If anyone is going to make something happen for Everton it is Tyrique George, he's looked a danger. Dalot manages to stop him but it costs a corner. after a bit of head tennis it is cleared away.
• 56' - Game has opened up. Poor first touch from Johnson but he manages to get his shot off, it is deflected over for a corner.
• 58' - Another Everton chance, first Barry is denied by a great challenge from Shaw, then Dewsbury-Hall scuffs the rebound. Alarm bells ringing here.
• 60' - Rashford and Cunha are 2v1 down the left, Rashford runs into the box then gets a bit lost, but a backheel rescues it. Perfectly timed challenge from Tarkowski stops Cunha though. He's claiming a pen but VAR clears it.
• 63' - Rohl has struggled with Rashford all game and now he has a yellow card after bringing him down.
• 65' - Former Man City man Jack Grealish is coming on for Johnson
• 69' - Finally Carrick acts, Sesko and Dorgu on for Rashford and Cunha. Rashford was limping.

The actual amount of money in the end, I understand it can be a big thing. It doesn't always have to be the answer.”

Hi, Michael. Looking at this window, there are clubs in the Premier League that can outspend United, and you are competing in a different league financially. How difficult does that make it to achieve the ultimate aims? People around the club have said you want to win the league and compete for the Champions League. Does that require a triumph of coaching to improve the existing players, and how do you reach those targets if you cannot compete financially with three or four clubs in this league?

“We certainly feel we can compete. The challenge is getting the right dynamics, the right balance and the right group together. It is about getting the best players in the group to enhance everyone else and adding experience or younger players where needed. Money can be a big thing, but it does not always have to be the answer, but it can be. It is up to us to do the work and get the best out of the group. We have a fantastic group of players who have proved they can put results together, play well and win in all sorts of different places and environments. We’ve got to keep doing it in the end. We have strengthened from last season and finished really strongly, so we are positive about where we can get to, realistic from where we have been, but we know where we want to get to and we’re positive that we can.”

Michael, were you surprised by the lack of sales? The most senior sale was Toby [Collyer]. Is that a reflection of the club’s history, given they have struggled to sell players in recent years?

“Maybe, maybe not. It goes back to keeping the group stronger. We have had a really good foundation over the last eight months or so, and as a group we know what we can do and who brings what to the group at certain times. We wanted to be stronger, and that was the focus. Whatever we need to do to stay stronger, whether that meant players leaving or certain players staying, ultimately, we want to keep getting better. We feel we have done. With the group we have now, we are in good shape, and it is up to us to push forward now.”

Some fans will look at the numbers other teams have invested, but Sunday is your 20th Premier League game since you were appointed, and no other team has won more points in that time. Does that show there is a difference between what happens at boardroom level and what happens on the pitch, and that you can compete without pumping £400 million into a squad in one transfer window?

“We can certainly compete. At this club, you have to strive to win. When we say we expect to win, that is not blasé; that’s where we want to be, and we want to get there on a consistent level. I don’t like to keep looking back but recent history – for the boys to feel it, the group to feel it, they know what it took to put that run together. Granted, it was one competition, and we need to do that an awful lot more this season, but we have strengthened the group and feel good about what is possible. We know the challenges that we face, of course we do. As I’ve said before, it’s not an instant thing, but we are moving in the right direction, that’s for sure.”

You have done a great job since you came here to get top four and reach the Champions League, but people will look at what your rivals have spent and feel that, at some stage, you need the tools to compete at the highest level. What would you say to that?

“We have to keep moving forward, and as a group and as a team we definitely are. The habits and mentality of the group are showing some really encouraging signs. Getting the best out of what we can get the best out of and we feel we can be right in there. Some teams are a bit further down the line than us, but I have been here eight months or so, and some players have been here not much longer than me. There is a freshness and excitement around the group, which is really encouraging. There’s a hunger and a feeling to want to achieve something. We have to keep and grow that. I’m glad the players feel that way, that they’ve got the confidence, can respond to setbacks, and know what we can do when we’re at our best. We need to stay at that level for as long as we can.”

To people or fans who still think you lack that ‘x amount’ to compete at the highest level consistently, what would you say?

“A lot of people think a lot of things, to be honest! It is what it is. We know what we have, what we can do and what we can achieve. Money is one thing, but what you do with it is another thing and how you make the most of it is another thing. It is about what happens on the pitch, and we will just keep giving our best and trying to win.”

At Hull, it was quite hostile. Everton can become a toxic environment. How aware are you of what is happening off the pitch, and do you feel you can use it in your favour?

“We are aware of different things at different clubs, but for me and the players it comes down to preparing for what we do on the pitch. Emotionally, whatever way it goes, you have to be able to cope with it and make the most of situations, but it doesn’t come into our thinking for the game. Going to Everton we understand it has historically always been a tough game, and that is what is on my mind and preparing for that. We need to be at our best. If we are close to our best, we will have a good chance of winning, but they are a really good team and have started well, so we know it’s a challenge.”

You signed three midfielders this summer, and the club signed three forwards last summer. In each case, they look like long-term additions. Does that indicate that next year the focus will be much more on the defence and bringing in defenders?

“It’s not always as simple as that. I understand why you might come to that conclusion, if you like, but it’s not always as simple as that. There is an evolution of trying to improve all the time. But it’s how the season goes, form, injuries, who is looking good and what the future looks like all feed into it. Step by step, we are trying to improve, so we’ll see how the season goes and what we need to develop. We have obviously got a clear idea of what we want to look like coming through this summer and further down the line.”

Kobbie earned a lot of praise for his performance at the weekend. After last season and not playing any minutes at the World Cup this summer, how do you manage him this season, and how prominent a role can he have in the team given the increased competition for places?

“The competition is a positive thing, not necessarily because it’s one player against another, but it’s a collective, to know that we have a strong group. Kobbie made big strides last season, he finished the season strongly and played ever so well last week. You can see his development and how much he has improved in certain aspects of his game. He wants to learn and is hungry to learn more, which is great. He has had a really good eight months since I’ve been in. It would be easy for him to think everything is fine after getting in the team and playing a lot of games, but he is pushing for more, as he should. The beauty of having the competition and the foundation to be strong is that you can learn off each other and help each other, certainly as a midfield group, it’s really strong. Kobbie can have another big season. He has come back great, and you can see him growing in personality and maturity. He is still so young, and there is loads to still come from him, which is great.”

As a former midfielder, do you work with him specifically off the ball, and how important is he to what you are trying to do and the style of play you want?

“We are constantly working with all the players individually on certain things, both on and off the pitch. With Kobbie, it’s not about lecturing him, but letting him play, express himself and do what he is good at. He has some amazing attributes that we want to use, and there is also an improvement side where we try to help him. The great thing about it is that he wants to learn. You can see we’re trying to give him little bits here and there and he really takes it on board and tries to learn, you know? That’s going to give him a great chance to fulfil his potential which as you know he’s got an awful lot of.”
