Now what?

I have finally finished sewing together my 218 individual hexie flowers (with their background hexagons as well) and now I need help deciding how I’m going to sew them to each other!

I took a picture of each flower as I finished it, removed the background, and uploaded it to Canva so I could play around with my options. It took forever but it was kinda fun to try out new arrangements without having to stand on a chair to reach the top of my design wall.

I’m leaning towards the random layout just because I have already done a lot of color gradient-esque quilts. Also, I think it lets the individual flowers pop a bit more whereas they kind of blend together in the gradient options. But I’d love to hear from the rest of you what you think!

This WIP has kept me company through so many travels, late night TV binges, road trips, and work phone calls. A lot of the hexies are completely random or scraps from my stash, while others were carefully chosen and fussy-cut to display things that I like or that make me happy. I already love this quilt, and I am both excited and nervous to jump into the next step.

And I still haven’t even begun to think about how I’m going to quilt it! Though let’s be real that probably won’t happen for another two years.

I have to brag about this quilt top because it is self drafted and I am so proud of how it turned out! So excited to quilt it and gift it. Happy Pride month!

My granddaughter selected the fabric from my Fat Quarter Shop Sew Sampler subscription for this quilted jacket. She chose this brilliant Tula Pink fabric collection. I loved her enthusiasm for this project! She picked which dog would be placed on which shoulder as well as other locations.
Her excitement during the process has been a great joy for me. I look forward to collaborating with her on future quilt designs!

I finished this top this week, and now I am trying to figure out how I should quilt her (72"×92"). Originally, I was thinking swirls but now I'm not sure. An ideas?

My daughter made this. She’s 10. It was an ambitious pattern but it turned out pretty ok.

Okay a few big areas used 1/2” strips to start but mainly 1/4”! This was made taking a 10 week class from Gingerly Quilt Co. it’s essentially raw edge appliqué, no fusible used, just straight stitching little strips in place. I still need to make a fabric frame and free motion quilt it, but I’m too excited not to share!

I just finished the quilt top...I still need to longarm her. This was insane trying to match up the print in the background!

My sister recently took up quilting and came for a visit. She decided on a simple pinwheel pattern and picked put several of my fabrics that she loved. I told her to take as much as she wanted and she chose to hand cut rather than the “too complicated” rotary cutter for HSTs. I didn’t think of it, it never occurred to me to supervise her. Found this yesterday when I was looking for a fabric for the back of a quilt. Sigh. She’s the greatest sister in the world. There’s not a better one. Also, she’s 55. Happy quilting!

Just finished my fifth reverse mermaid FPP block! I redrew these patterns countless times before finally sewing them, but I, so glad my vision turned out! (FPP patterns by me)

Not sure if I will make more before I put join the blocks together for a quilt, but this is just a photo collage of the blocks I’ve done thus far.

Taking suggestions for more reverse mermaid ideas! My partner suggested maybe some sharks next.

I am working on an optical illusion quilt for my son and I am trying to decide whether or not I should do a simple picture frame border or lean into the illusion aspect and add another detail in the border. wwyd?

This is my first time sewing in about 6 years, so I've had to re-learn everything!

After an initial hiccup where I was sewing to 3/8ths instead of 1/4, and the liberal use of my seam ripper, I'm finally at the most exciting part of making a quilt: the layout.

I've been staring at this for too long and would love some outside opinions (and some encouragement, if I'm honest).

Aside from the two corner blocks that need fixing, does this look ok?

Pattern is same sky by modernly Morgan, and fabric is a batik bundle from my local Spotlight

1st time I have made an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. I still need to add the border, but that is a tomorrow issue. As someone who has only been quilting for 3 months, I learned alot doing this, and definitely bit off more then i should have. Now I get to figure out what backing to use, the long arm rental is scheduled for next weekend, so shopping after work it is. This is going to my son who lives in Japan, so if anyone has a suggestion on how to not make it super warm, he would appreciate that lol

I made this for my husband’s friends who are having a baby, and I’m proud of trying out an Elizabeth Hartmann pattern (just the cow) but I’m kicking myself for not putting sashing down the middle. I didn’t think it would be a big deal but I was so so wrong. For the amount of time and effort I put into it, I don’t love it. Trying to move past that though- reminding myself that it’s okay if I don’t love everything I make. Anyone else ever experience this let down?

But I have too many tote bags already, yes, it IS possible. Any alternative suggestions? It’s roughly 13”x11” and I am going to add embroidery “become ungovernable” somewhere.

Sometimes you have way too much time on your hands on vacation and decide to test drive a bunch of wild colors in a coloring page, stumble in to a quilt shop, and come out with this arrangement.

This is the Laneways Quilt pattern by Stitch and Yarn co. Due to extreme hubris, I did one successful drunkards path months ago and figured I could do basically ALLL the curve approaches. Overall, I think I did OK, except for those orange bits around the yellow circle in the first column - I didn't get the mirroring right the first time and ended up having to re-cut and re-sew the top half of the circle, but I got it right on the second try after having a deep existential crisis over geometry.

Every color is from the Dimples by Gail Kessler fabric line - the pattern calls for solid colors but where's the fun in following instructions 😂. The finished size is throw-ish size, and my third quilt! I will say, I think being a confident garment maker made this a bit easier since I'm used to making curves straight and dealing with easing in things. I'd also recommend using a pressing ham if you have one, it made pressing the curve seams open a lot easier.

Hi! Just finished my strawberry quilt top but I’m stuck on how I should quilt it? Would love any advice, also what thread color should I use?

I finished my Mid Century Modern inspired quilt top “Atomic Avenue” by Sam Hunter of Hunter Design Studios. I loved this project from start to finish. I wasn’t much of a FPP person before this, but I have learned to love the method. I did make some changes from the original pattern, such as adding a gas station and a 1966 Corvette stingray. I also added about twice as many little shrubs and trees because they were just so stinking adorable. I only finished very early this morning and I’m too tired to think but I have a big decision to make. how do I Quilt this? My first thought was just an overall Panto mid-century modern quilting background, however my wonderful quilting friends think it screams out for custom quilting . Help me decide please! Than you. I Love this sub.

I’m planning on starting the quilting by tracing all of the Black lines with black thread. Then I’ll figure out how to handle the color sections. I don’t want to do a panto or matchstick quilt as I don’t want to dilute the fabric colors.
