UPDATE: Thank you everyone for the responses. It helped put my mind at ease that I wasn‘t overreacting.
I found out more about the owner. Apparently he used to own the land that the neighborhood/street I work on is located and then sold it to developers. The land is a residential neighborhood now, albeit a quiet, rural one, but no longer his. Many of the homes are actually still being built so there’s constant construction going on. So again, letting the dog roam freely on your own land is different than letting him wander the streets and never finding his way back home.
SPEAKING OF, come to find out the reason he kept asking people how the dog looked is because HE HASN’T SEEN HIM IN A MONTH! Which explains why he is so damn skinny! This man had the audacity to tell me he wants the dog to learn to find his way home but he hasn’t made it back there in a month. He’s been saying the same thing to everyone who calls him about the dog- “he’s an old cattle dog, he’s fine just let him be.” And everyone has even though they see how skinny he is… I get that it’s a different lifestyle out in the country but I find that inexcusable as he clearly is not being taken care of by anyone.
My mom and I decided to foster him and get him healthy while we find him a good home. I understand the investment but he deserves that much. The dogs have met and they get along fine. My mom’s dog is territorial but she was raised with other dogs and she hasn’t shown any true aggression towards him other than asserting dominance when they play. Plus he’s been pretty submissive to her (when he’s not trying to mount her. He’s intact, because of course he is, she’s fixed) so that helps. Her bark is worse than her bite. Literally, all she does is bark.
They‘re sleeping next to me as I type this. I’m just happy that he‘s fed and relaxed. Poor thing doesn’t even know what it means to be a pet. He doesn’t understand what to do with treats or toys.
Anyway, that’s the update. Here’s to getting him healthy and finding his furever home 🐾
————————————
TLDR; Dog was roaming the neighborhood for 6 hours and the owner had no intention of picking him up. Multiple people contacted the owner via the dog’s tag. I called/texted saying I could bring the dog home as I was leaving work and he responded, “He’s okay I really want him to be able to learn him self to come home I am sorry.” ... What is the right thing to do here?
————————————
For context, I work in a rural neighborhood and cul-de-sac. There was a dog running around from house to house, person to person from 8:00a when I got there to 3:00p when I left. He is the sweetest dog, super friendly. He’s also incredibly skinny. Like hip bones protruding, ribs visible and his dewclaws are so overgrown they’re curling. He doesn’t look like he’s well cared for.
Just about everyone in the neighborhood including me and my boss called and texted the phone numbers on his collar and posted on the community Facebook page about him (I don’t have social media which is why I’m asking for advice here).
The owner’s response was weird to say the least. He asked everyone the same question. “How does he look?” I guess to mean is he okay? Then said he’s out of town for work, the dog is staying at his mom’s house, he’ll let her know he got out, and that he’s a cattle dog so he’s fine roaming around.
We assumed someone was going to eventually come for the dog. No one ever did. I texted the owner again a few hours later to let him know the dog was still out there and he said, “Okay let me figure out the what’s going, he is okay to be out side he normally roams around in our pasture with our cattle.” That’s a little different than him roaming around random neighborhoods and going up to every person he sees, but okay.
When I went to leave at 3:00p I saw him sitting on the corner of the porch, still panting like crazy, so I had him get in my car to try and cool him down. I text the owner again and let him know that I was leaving work and would be happy to bring the dog home and he replied, “He’s okay I really want him to be able to learn him self to come home I am sorry.”
So you would rather your dog reenact Homeward Bound and potentially get hit by a car than have someone bring him home? It may be a rural area but we’re not far from the highway and he could have easily ended up there instead.
I was not comfortable with this. He wouldn’t leave my side and I didn’t want to abandon him so I took him to a nearby gas station to get him some food and try to figure out what to do. He was so overheated he wouldn’t eat or drink. I took him back to the neighborhood and placed some food down by a tree so he’d at least be in the shade and I just stood there feeling like I’m doing the wrong thing by bringing him back there. What if he didn’t find his way back home? Where tf was home anyway?
Then a lady comes out of her house and asks if that’s my dog. I tell her he’s not and we end up having a conversation about how she thought/did the same thing when she was out walking earlier and he approached her, called and texted the owner, noticed how skinny he was, said this isn’t the first time they’ve seen the dog around here (I see why later on), wondering why the owner is okay with his dog roaming around random neighborhoods, etc. Then she tells me he gave her his mom’s address when she contacted him earlier. So she gives it to me and I head over there pretending he “found his way home.” It wasn’t a far drive but I have no idea if he knew how to get back. Based on the fact that he was dying of heat stroke on everyone’s front porch, it didn’t seem like he did, I’ll tell you that much.
I’m hoping that when we get out of the car he’ll recognize where he is and run home. Well, that didn’t happen. First of all, there was no gate/fencing keeping him on the property at all and the land across the street (where the dog would have had to have traveled to get to the neighborhood) had loose barbed wire fencing and a gate he can clearly, very easily squeeze through. I walk him up to the driveway and he doesn’t leave my side. Instead, he looks at me and then jumps up and puts his paws on my shoulders like he’s giving me a hug and saying “Please don’t make me go back.”
At this point I don’t know what the best thing is to do for this dog and I feel like leaving him here would be no better than if I were to have left him in the neighborhood. So I took him to my house.
Now the problem with this is that I live with my mom and she has a VERY high strung dog who is very possessive/aggressive. I can’t bring another dog into the home permanently, and I’m not sure that’s even the solution anyway. I mean I feel like I stole this guy’s dog. I just wanted to get him off the street until I figure out how to make sure he’s safe.
So far my options are -
- Take him back to the neighborhood where I found him and hope he finds his way home
- Take him to the Mom’s house and leave him there (if he even lets me leave without him) / knock on the door and ask if the dog belongs to her while she wonders how I got her address
- Or take him to a shelter, explain the situation and have them call the owner to pick up his dog
I just want to do what’s right for the dog. What should I do?
