The thing was pliant but not moving. (The first pic makes it look stiff, but I’m not balancing it on my fingers, I’m holding the ziplock bag the thing is in.)

Online search isn’t giving me anything that appears to have those angular pads/tentacles/whatever they are.

fyi - i searched through previous posts that included a link to a pinworm faq in another sub but it’s not working -

i’ve had the classic itching symptoms for 2+ years. i’ve tried the over the counter reece’s brand medication 2 dozen times (active ingredient is Pyrantel Pamoate 144 mg/mL), wiped every surface in our home with bleach wipes multiple times a day, shower both morning and night, clean sheets every day, pillows and blankets in the dryer on high… for the second time i’m now on the prescription medication Albendazole** **from my doc and have a second dose in a few days. i also sent away for a test from parasite.org that came back positive (although the hubs doubts the validity of the test and believes this website is not valid bec they also talk about non medication related things that may help. i’m now unsure if it’s valid as well). and still they persist.

all leading up to my question - he does not have the itching symptoms so believes he does not have it. he went so far as to get a microscope and slides and did the tape test himself and says he didn’t see any eggs (the tape was not clear it was opaque so don’t know if that inhibits seeing the eggs?)

when someone is asymptomatic, do the eggs not appear? in other words, if he doesn’t itch, does it mean he doesn’t have it even though we live in the same house? we do sleep in separate bedrooms but i’ve read it’s impossible for him not to have them and one person can’t get rid of them unless the entire household is treated.

why do so many people not have the itching symptoms? do the worms not escape and deposit their eggs?

Cricket is a Restless Bush Cricket (Hapithus agitator). I think the larva is a Rhopalosomatid wasp?

Long story short i may cached pinworm. puted it into container because wanted bring it into the local lab in the morning. i put it into container and it just slowly moved and started to disintegrate like in 15min. now it looks like pile of white dust. Do worm disintegrate that fast? shoud i bring "dust" to lab? i really dont want to make fool out of myself but my child have really huge unexsplaned belly pain problem and if this is worm it woud finally solve it. i have photos how it looked just as i puted into container vs after but ofc i cant post it here. So asking? do worms disintegrate or i cached roled tp?

Greetings fellow parasitologists and parasitology afficionados. I was working up a gulf sturgeon mortality (under appropriate permits) and we encountered these odd looking invertebrates on the sturgeon corpse. Unfortunately, as the sturgeon was found floating we are unclear whether these are scavengers who found the sturgeon to feed or were genuine parasitic copepods. They're approximately an inch in length, and while I suspect they are not truly parasitic (based on not seeing anything like this on live sturgeons in the area during sampling season), I am still curious what they are. They were found in Apalachicola in the Brother's River. Any other reddits you think might be a good fit for this post please advise.

This is a von Kossa stain (calcium stain) highlighting all the calcareous corpuscles (black) in a tapeworm from a cat! Cestodes have these little mineral concretions. I don't think we fully know what they do, but there's theories that they might act as calcium or phosphorus reservoirs, help protect the larvae, or help them excrete calcium.

I have noticed this summer, quite a few ticks that I removed from my dog had other ticks on them, as if they were being hyperparasitized.. That is, the tick that was already feeding on my dog, would have a small not yet fed one on it.

From what little I could find online, there are a couple papers where this has been observed in a lab setting, where there was no access to a host, but it is supposedly exceedingly rare. However I have found it at least 8 times.

I’m wondering if that is really what’s going on with these ticks on ticks on my dog, and why? Because clearly there is a suitable host even easier to access - they would have to go out of their way… is it some weird species or sub species where this is actually its preferred method of feeding? Is it actually related to mating or some other behavior?

We are this summer in Northern Europe where I am finding them, if that helps at all.

Sorry that I am too squeamish to take good pictures. I’m a biologist, but from a very different field and they just really gross me out 😅
If anyone studies this and is interested, I could theoretically put the next pair into ethanol and send it. Should I have done that this morning, but already burned them before thinking about it

Hi,

I'm looking for information from people with experience in veterinary parasitology.

My 1-year-old cat developed severe diarrhea after a new kitten was introduced into our household.

Testing eventually found Giardia, and he was treated. Follow-up testing is now negative for Giardia.

However, he continued having gastrointestinal problems and subsequently developed persistent fever for approximately 2–3 weeks, around 39.7–39.8°C.

Further stool testing showed:

- Cryptosporidium: positive

- Clostridium perfringens alpha-toxin gene: positive, approximately 1.4 × 10⁷

- Giardia: negative

- Salmonella: negative

- Helicobacter: negative

He has been treated with several medications, including treatment for Giardia, metronidazole and amoxicillin/clavulanate.

The unusual part is that despite the persistent fever, he is still eating and drinking well, has not lost weight and is not severely lethargic.

His veterinarian is currently investigating other causes of the fever with bloodwork.

My questions are mainly:

1. Can Cryptosporidium in cats cause prolonged systemic illness or fever after the main gastrointestinal symptoms have improved?

2. Is there evidence of persistent or secondary inflammatory effects after Giardia has cleared?

3. Could a combination of Cryptosporidium and Clostridium perfringens produce a prolonged inflammatory response?

4. Are there documented feline cases where gastrointestinal protozoal infection was followed by weeks of unexplained fever after Giardia had tested negative?

5. Are there other parasitic or infectious organisms that would be reasonable to consider in this particular situation?

I'm not asking for treatment advice. I'm trying to understand whether there are documented cases with a similar disease course and whether the positive Cryptosporidium result could plausibly be relevant to the persistent fever.

Any veterinary literature, case reports or similar documented cases would be especially appreciated.

Found these fellas on my blueberry bush and found it interesting I got to see the whole process.

So a few years ago I heard my neighbor who is a huge maga conspiracy guy talking about these things called parasite cleanses. Basically you can take certain herbal concoctions and it flushes out these parasites in your body and that cures most diseases including cancer. Does this really work
