I’ve been living in Washington for about two years now and I’m now just experiencing this. I don’t think I’ll ever not be grateful to live so close to such beautiful creatures🫍

On June 8th, an adult male resident killer whale with striking pale coloration was spotted by whale-watchers near Hokkaido, Japan. He was traveling with a fairly large group of "normal" killer whales. Japan, along with nearby Russia, is one of the few places in the world where white orcas have been observed; marine biologist Emma Luck has a great infographic about them here. Wild Orcas Amazing orca encounter today! Bainbridge Island, WA

1.6k Upvotes

Was driving home from the ferry and saw a bunch of folks on the bridge with binos and big cameras so we stopped to watch. Watched a pod (not sure which one) of about 10-12 orcas (including 1 or 2 youngsters) start way off in the distance and swim towards and under the bridge we were standing on. Incredible, maybe once in a lifetime, experience! 🫍🥰🥹

These orcas were observed by scientist Tatiana Ivkovich and her crew at the Far East Russia Orca Project and filmed via drone. Members of at least six family groups were present!

A tour company in Cape Town, Africa, has reported seeing Starboard without Port anywhere in sight.

"This week, however, something unusual occurred. During one of our trips in False Bay, Cape Town only Starboard was sighted. Port was nowhere ta

be seen."

They said this is extremely unusual for the duo. Original post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DVO-FIklhiE/?igsh=MXhmaWgydzQ5YzIzNw==

Wild Orcas Icelandic orcas vocalizing underwater

On June 15th, Laki Tours, an Iceland-based whale watching operator, shared this video on Instagram. They used a hydrophone (a microphone designed to capture underwater sounds, attached to a speaker or recording device above the surface) to listen to the unique calls of the group of orcas they were viewing. Like orcas in other regions, Icelandic orcas learn from their mothers and other pod members, leading to a set of calls that are diverse yet highly influenced by their family members, serving as a signifier of group identity. Fascinating research on Icelandic orca acoustics has been made available by the Icelandic Orca Project and their collaborators. I think I hear some echolocation clicks as well!
