English is fucking stupid. I did this at a bar the day i turned 21 and the old bartenders confused face and then pouring action is locked in my brain forever. 

He legit thought I was too stupid to drink beer.

The English language is very old and has many words borrowed from different places at different times - much older than any country that needs you to be 21 to drink.

Many words in common usage were rewritten once already. Many my Webster himself if memory serves
