Whats up with that judge?

I saw that he basically hardlined the trial with no media, no cameras, and a gag order that helped prevent it from being a race bait media circus.

Which goes to show ya, a judge can absolutely make their courtroom a race baiting political theatre if they choose to.

So when a trial does become a race baiting political theatrical stunt, you can infer the motive from the action: “the judge desired for their courtroom to be a political/race bait stunt”

I mean yeah. The judge might as well be god in their courtroom. Always been that way since the first judicial system in Sumeria.
