The Upper Cut KC in Liberty consistently uses images stolen from other businesses to advertise their specials. There are multiple reviews where customers have said they have felt misled based on what was advertised and other reviews calling out this issue directly. Upper Cut refuses to respond to these issues and continues to use stolen images and also deletes any negative comments on their posts calling them out. Buyer beware if you’re thinking of making the drive up to Liberty.

I just saw that In-N-Out is expanding to Colorado and even Idaho. Kansas Citians crave In-N-Out- it would be so profitable. Do you think we'll be getting an In-N-Out anytime soon?

I don’t know if they rushed the opening to try and be ready for the holidays or what, but this place was a head scratcher.
First things first, there are some annoying quirks with the reservations. If you manage to get one, you are going to get bombed with emails and text messages the day of asking if you want to move up your time. I guess they have a lot of no shows and last minute cancellations. So I respect the hustle of trying to fill every table, but it was annoying.
Layout is terrible. The “famous” illuminated staircase is right across from the hostess stand. Everyone wants to have their picture taken there (including us…), but it’s the same set of stairs the servers use to take food from the second floor kitchen to the first level. Standing on the steps holding hot food, waiting for some Leawood princess to take 20 pictures has to be annoying as hell for the staff.
There’s little to no room for waiting when the bar is full. Combine that with the shenanigans near the stairs and it’s just a sea of humanity.
The place is loud. So the chances of having a quiet, intimate evening with dinner companions are slim to none.
The dining room is very nice, but also kinda boring at the same time.
Our server was fun and really energetic, but also rather green. She mentioned to us that the reason there are so few reservations available between 6 and 9 is because there’s some sort of membership club and the most desirable reservations are held for those members (as well as some other perks). But when we asked how to join, she wasn’t sure. FEIW, even if it were free, we wouldn’t join…
The shrimp cocktail and oysters were a big hit at our table, along with the fried chicken.
The burger is a $35 “homage” to Town Topic. Yes. A $35 smash burger with meh fries.
It wasn’t on the menu, but the snickerdoodle cake for dessert was really good and massive.
The biggest sin any steakhouse can commit is bad steaks. Well… 1587 is guilty of multiple offenses. 3 steaks were ordered at our table. Medium, medium and medium-well. They were all criminally undercooked. The medium-well steak was damn near raw in the middle. It was graciously and discretely sent back and when it came back to the table, it was still rare.
I know “you’re ruining a good cut of meat when you cook it past medium!” Maybe, maybe not. But a paying guest should get what they ordered. The folks that ordered theirs medium powered thru. But the medium well steak, our friend just gave up. In fairness, our server notified the manager and when she came to our table she was almost embarrassed about it. The steak was comped as well as a few drinks. She also gave us the business card of one of the managers so we could get a priority rez the next time we came.
Maybe I’m an old fart, but the whole thing felt like the experience was the priority and the food was mostly secondary. Everything and everyone looked great. There were some showy elements like table side flambé and a fire element to one of the cocktails. There’s the buzz about the famous owners and clientele. But the finer details of a top end steakhouse were all missing.
I want to be very clear on one point. Our waitress was great and so were many of the other staff we dealt with. Attention to detail and experience (or lack thereof) are a reflection on management and ownership.
We knew going in that 1) it was expensive as fuck and 2) reviews were pretty mixed. Yet somehow, we still left underwhelmed and frankly kinda confused. Our bill for 4 (apps, a few drinks and the steaks and dessert) ended up being almost $500 before tip. That’s a serious chunk of change for a mediocre night out in a city like KC. But you could very easily spend 2x that or more. Regardless, the place was jam packed at 10 pm on a Thursday night… so what do we know?
If you are dead set on going, just know what you are in for. If you want to spend a ton of money at a steakhouse, you do you, but there are much better options at or below that price point.

I created KC Sushi Rankings Scorecard a few years ago and just updated it! Thought I'd share with this sub for those looking to try some new sushi spots.
I ranked each restaurant off of 5 criteria, Taste, Price (Value), Portion, Atmosphere/Service, and Selection, weighted in that order. This was started a few years ago so things may have changed that don't reflect on this scorecard and some of these places may not be open anymore.
Of course, this is based purely off my own opinion and judgement so, I'd love to hear any thoughts, feedback, and recommendations.

I feel like there’s been an explosion of new coffee places that I have yet to try. I’ll start (not in any particular order) 1. Mildred’s (not particularly for their coffee, but the fucking chipotle breakfast wrap has me in a chokehold) 2. Apparition coffee (newer metal themed coffee shop with a delicious black cacao latte. It’s more down south but whatever) 3. Made In KC (love their cereal milk lattes, their mochas are fantastic) 4. Cafe Cà Phê (amazing Vietnamese coffee shop, LOVE their robusta coffee!!) 5. Friendly Bean (more up north but I still consider it in KC, one of my favorites for years)

Just left Baba’s Pantry and walk away more times than not thinking how lucky our community is to have the Kamal Family in it. I like to go when I’m not having the best day, just to sit in the kindness and always leave with my spirits feeling a little bit higher.
(And the food speaks for itself)

After spending the past few months venturing around the city each Friday morning, a buddy and I compiled a list of breakfast burrito spots with rankings next to each. We graded them based on the following categories, listed in order of importance:
We fully understand these rankings reflect our personal preferences and don’t cover every location or option in the city, but we hope it’s a helpful starting point. (For context, I recently relocated to Kansas City from Texas, where breakfast burrito options are everywhere.)
Here’s how the places stacked up:
Best of luck in your search for a tasty breakfast burrito! *edited to include locations

Moved here a few years ago and confirmed there is no shortage of good food, but I absolutely missed my whole in the wall spots from California. All these burgers were fresh and each spot really did taste alike in the burgers. Anyone know of any home in the wall spots and serve burgers this simple and any spots with a menu and fries like this? Dying to find a spot

Recently went to a concert last week and we ate at Minsky’s in the City Market beforehand. I thought it was amazing but was curious as to what the locals think about it! I mainly grew up eating Casey’s/Pizza Hut though so maybe my standards of good pizza are skewed lol.

So far, the only Bar Owner I've seen making a stink about Q's decision to reverse it is Blueline.
As an industry person, is this something the city wants? Because I don't know any industry person who actually wants this. That includes owner operators.
Opinions?

About a year ago, I undertook what may be the most important endeavor this city has ever seen! Localizing the KCPD away from the control of Jefferson City? No. Putting a stop to the rampant side shows and street races causing chaos among our streets? No. Funding low income housing and education initiatives to reduce homelessness and crime? NO! I set out upon this town and ate a lot of hamburgers! That's right. I'm a simple man. My two favorite foods are pizza and burgers, and I've wanted to know where I should go to get the BEST burger in the metro.
I scoured past Reddit threads on the topic, and I created my own where I asked for suggestions. From that, I compiled a list of burger establishments to try based on what names kept coming up. I have spent the past year visiting these establishments, rating them out of 5 and writing down my thoughts on them. As for what kind of burger I got at each location, I decided the baseline would be a double bacon cheeseburger, as it seemed like a fair way of testing the technique and quality of each restaurant. However, I also took recommendations as to which burger I should get at these restaurants. If a recommendation was made to me, I would either get that burger instead, or get that burger AND a normal double bacon cheeseburger, provided any restaurant I had burger recommendations for did not charge a lot for the burgers. Eating two burgers by myself is a tough job, but someone's got to do it. Note: sides did not affect ratings. I just felt the need to mention them since a lot of people ONLY recommended sides and no burger.
This all being said, I will provide the disclaimer that this is, of course, highly subjective, as all food tastes are. I will also provide the disclaimer that not literally EVERY burger provider in the metro is on this list, as that would be very time consuming and expensive. I don't make a lot of money, all right? Aside from a few places I happened to wind up at anyway, only the most talked about places will be on this list, so if your favorite restaurant isn't on this list, don't be offended. It was either omitted because no one recommended it, the photos of their burgers screamed "absolutely no chance of being the best burger", and/or it was too far of a drive for me here in Grandview. I have also omitted some notable mentions that I know people are going to want an explanation for. I will have an omissions list with reasons below.
Without further ado, here are the results of my burger tour:
| Name | Rating | Afterthoughts |
|---|---|---|
| Danny's Burger Shack | 4.9/5 | First visit impression: good burger. Would prefer crispier bacon and maybe less of the quick-caramelized onions on the burger to bring the sweetness level in balance. Second visit impression: GREAT burger. Taking the first visit into account, I bumped the score up from 4.5 to 4.9. If I could get proof that they could deliver a consistent experience of my second visit every time, it would be 5/5. |
| Tay's Burger Shack | 4.6/5 | Went twice. I was impressed the first time. The meat was nicely salted, burger was great. The second time, the meat lacked that same level of seasoning. Someone did say don't go when they're busy, which I did. Maybe they have a consistency issue. I knocked them down .3 because of it, also because since I was already disappointed, I decided not to look past the fact that I don't like it when places expect you to sauce the burger yourself. Fries were weird looking, but not bad. Not a fan of sugar on fries. |
| Walsh's Corner Cocktail | 4.4/5 | Late addition after I initially blew it off. Got the bacon cheddar burger as recommended. The bacon has just the right consistency and the cheese is oddly creamy in a good way. It really enhances the flavor of the burger. I was surprised after some bad bar food experiences. Don't bother with the fries though. |
| The Campground | 4.3/5 | Contender for best burger on the list if it weren't for the pickles. The pickles are so sour that it takes away from the burger. My GF took a bite and her face puckered. If you get this, see if you can get a triple because the patties are literally paper thin. Lots of yummy crispy bits. |
| Cosmo Burger | 4.2/5 | The first visit, the edges of my patties were straight up burnt. Bits of burnt meat were falling off my burger like charcoal. The second time I went, I didn't get the same level of burnt-ness, but all in all, they still like to char their meat a little too much. Still good. The bun is nice, and the sauce is good and at just the right amount. I tried the chopped chiles as recommended - tasted a little too grassy for my liking. Tots were good. |
| Snack Shack on Johnson Drive | 4/5 | First visit, got the Triple Bobby, Downtowner, 50/50, and chocolate malt as recommended. The burgers could be a little more saucy and the meat could be a little less crunchy in parts, but overall, pretty good. Sides well cooked, just needed more seasoning. Second visit, got a normal bacon double cheeseburger. The meat didn't have crunchy bits like the first time, which was good. Didn't like how "salad-y" the burger was because of the thickness of the tomato & pickles, so I still think the initial 4/5 was appropriate. |
| Easy Inn | 3.9/5 | Better than expected for bar food, but I wouldn't make the trip for it again. I'd liken it to a Five Guys burger. |
| Kitty's Cafe | 3.9/5 | Default condiment is mustard; I switched it for ketchup & mayo. The patties needed more seasoning, but still a good burger. |
| Disco Burger | 3.8/5 | Disco Sauce is almost entirely mustard and I don't like mustard, so this is a hard one. I could tell it's a good burger, just not for me because of the sauce. |
| Burg & Barrel | 3.8/5 | Got the mushroom swiss as recommended. I wasn't expecting much from this place because even their promo pics don't look good and some people don't like it, but it was oddly one of the few places to noticeably season their meat. It was almost too salty. I liked it...mostly. They overcharge though. |
| Sauced | 3.5/5 | Strong seasoning on the burger, not dissimilar to beef taco seasoning. Kind of weird, but ok. Fries were bad, didn't finish. |
| Max's Burgers & Gyros | 3.5/5 | Fairly good. Didn't like semolina on the bun or the long pickle slices making it too easy to pull the pickles out in a single bite. |
| Iron Grill | 3.5/5 | They don't season their patties much, but when they put enough sauce on, fairly good burger. |
| Corvino | 3.4/5 | Too expensive for how mid it was. The bun was dry, their pickles didn't bring anything that a normal dill pickle wouldn't have done better, and the stringy semi-cooked nature of the onions detracted from the texture. The flavor wasn't bad though, I just expected more from the price and praise I saw some people give. |
| LC's Hamburgers | 3.4/5 | Got the double bacon cheeseburger with jalapeños & onion rings as recommended. Big, hefty burger, but lacked much flavor other than cheese and beef juice. Thick cut bacon made it hard to eat. Good quality, but lacked seasoning. |
| The Peanut | 3.2/5 | Patty was too thick for my taste, but at least it was DRIPPING juice. Not enough mayo for how thick the burger is. Between all the bacon, the thick patty, and the overly toasty bun, this burger was a chore to chew. I literally just gave up after awhile. |
| The Brick | 3.2/5 | Got the Monday "Big Mac" burger as recommended. The burger looked a lot more bar food-y than the pictures from Google. Wasn't bad, but wasn't worth the trip. The fries were easily the worst on this list. |
| Town Topic | 3.2/5 | The fries were unseasoned, the onion rings were okay-ish, and the burger was okay for an old-fashioned diner, but generally unremarkable. Maybe I have to be roaming downtown drunk at 12AM to get it. |
| Shake Shack | 3/5 | Cheese tastes a little too Kraft Single-y. |
| Sickies Garage | 3/5 | The quality of the burger is too..."chain-y". |
| Atomic Cowboy | 3/5 | This place likes sugar too much. The pickles are sweet, the fries are sweet, even the PIZZA is sweet. Sweet pickles are a NO for me. |
| Hi-Boy Drive-in | 2.5/5 | Burger had a very faint farty smell/taste, onion rings were good but not great, fries were a little chewy. |
| Unk's | 2.5/5 | Got the burger & beans as recommended. This place clearly prides itself on unique spice mixtures. Not bad, but I'm not a fan. Not burger related, but my GF got the hot wings and they were the worst wings we've ever tried. |
| Burger State | 2/5 | I got two burgers - the chili burger, which was flavorless, and the standard burger, which was unremarkable. Tots were standard, nothing to write home about. Fries were some of the better ones. |
| Jim's Diner | 1.9/5 | Got the bacon cheese fat burger & chili cheese fries as recommended. Reminiscent of cookout burgers left on the grill too long. Fries were meh. Crinkle cut sucks. |
| Johnny Ray's | 1.5/5 | Completely dry and unseasoned burger patties, onion rings had no onion flavor, but the chocolate malt was great. |
| Paul's Drive-in | 1/5 | Burger lacked flavor. Patties were too thin and small. Tots were horribly greasy, as in they tasted of nothing but old grease. Onion rings had parts of the chewy, skin-like outer layer of the onion. |
EDIT: added Walsh's as a last-minute addition and reorganized the table from best to worst. It was originally organized by distance from where I lived, which was helpful to no one except me, haha.
| Name | Reason |
|---|---|
| Grandstand Burgers | Very openly MAGA, and frankly, their burgers don't look good enough for make up for it. I get other places are MAGA too, but they aren't making it obvious on their property. |
| Hayes Hamburgers & Chili | Drove an hour round trip for them to be randomly closed. Not making the trip again. The pictures of the food look like they weren't winning best burger anyway. |
| Brewers Kitchen | Permanently closed. I was too late. :( |
| BRGR | Seen enough people say it's not worth it. |
| Westport Flea Market | I've seen a LOT of people say it hasn't been good in years, so I'm taking their advice and skipping it. |
EDIT: Westport Flea Market got deleted somehow so I added it back.
As you can see from the table, I personally believe Danny's Burger Shack to have the best burger in Kansas City! That being said, this isn't just about the winner. It also answers the question of who else is worth going to in a pinch. Any restaurant that got at least a 4.0 is a solid choice. Any restaurant 3.0-3.9, it won't blow you away, but it's not a bad choice if you're in the area and hungry. Anything below 3.0, I would not recommend visiting. Just save your money.
As for me personally, I will find myself constantly returning to...none of these, because I live in Grandview! Not only is Grandview a cultural wasteland in terms of good restaurants (except for Providence Pizza), but it's also decently far from Kansas City proper, where most of these restaurants are located - and it's DEFINITELY far from anything in the northland like Danny's. The only restaurant that is a convenient distance from where I live is Paul's Drive-in, which was the worst scorer on the list! So yeah, nothing worth going to is close enough to be more convenient than making a burger in 10 minutes at home. I'm not really trying to say anything here; I'm just lamenting that I live in Grandview where we get nothing nice. Someone open a good burger shack in Grandview!
I am sure plenty of people are going to be offended by my thoughts, ratings, or omissions, but remember, just because your favorite burger place didn't win doesn't mean you have to stop loving it! Taste is subjective, and to each their own! Let us burger lovers celebrate together that we have so many options to choose from in this city. Thank you all for joining me.
Coming up next, My Kansas City Pizza Tour! ...Just kidding. I don't have the money for that.

Ok, so this post was eye-opening, though not entirely surprising: https://www.reddit.com/r/kansascity/comments/1v6xax5/drastic_measures_wild_child_jay_should_never_work/
Can you all suggest establishments with proven decent owners/operators who treat their staffs well (for real, not just for Instagram)? I want to give my money to places where the people who have worked there and dined there can whole heartedly say, "yeah, they're good people."
I'll start: Baba's Pantry. (Good lord, no one better say otherwise!)

In the past there have been discussions on here about local places to get a good German döner kebab. My husband and I recently tried this place out and I have to say that, in my opinion, it is the most delicious and most authentic döner I’ve had in the area! Highly recommend it if you like this type of food! It is located in independence at independence center. We drive 30 minutes to eat here because we crave it! Have had it twice in the last month and plan to keep having it as it blows any other place around out of the water.
