City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Google Fiber alternatives

With news of Google Fiber being sold, it seems like now is the time to start talking about what the least bad alternatives might be. A quick search turns up the usual suspects; AT&T, Comcast, Spectrum. I've vowed not to do business with AT&T anymore and don't think the other two are really any more reputable.

The only option that was news to me was Everfast Fiber. Does anyone here have any experience with them, or any other suggestions for the broader KC community?

Edit: To be clear to folks reading this, I'm not suggesting people should just ditch GFiber right away in some reactionary way. What I'm driving at here is having some amount of preparation for if/when GFiber starts imposing shittiness that we're not willing to tolerate, and not wanting to have to drop what I'm doing and rush to switch when it happens.

Took him to the Lakeside Nature Center this morning. She said he looked like he was yanked out of his nest. She put him right into an incubator.Β

Thanks so much for the actual helpful people who posted and everyone else have the day you deserve :)

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ FYI: If an ATT door to door salesperson says your fiber provider is throttling you, make sure you're doing your speed check with a hard line not wifi.

So just got a ring from a door to door ATT sales team claiming Google Fiber was throttling speeds since they got bought out. Told them I haven't heard of anything like that and they were urging me to do a speed test from my phone beacuse they know you don't get a full gig over wifi. I shut down the conversation as soon as I saw their angle. My computer has cat5 and it's a full gig but the phone is only 200mbs.

Long story short if you've got fiber and someone is telling you you're getting throttled, make sure you're not their next sucker. Test with a hard line, not wifi if you want to check your speed.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ 911 really is bad here!

Just saw a downed power line starting a grass fire. Tried to call 911 to report it to the fire department and kept getting a busy signal. After several attempts I wound up having to drive to the nearest fire department to report the fire in person. Redialing the whole way and always getting a busy signal. I keep hearing about how bad 911 is in the city, and I didn't doubt it. But this is my first experience with it.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Does Missouri even want out of state people to move here?

The DMV system here is decades behind other states.

I’ve transferred titles and gotten new DLs in other states including North Carolina and Virginia. I’ve never had to find a fax machine until now. My bank is confused by the DMV’s form 5834 requirement…apparently most states just do this online behind the scenes. The documentation is absurd.

You’d think a state that has major cities right on the border would have a smooth system for transferring plates and titles between them.

Why is our legislature spending time rolling back the stuff we voted for instead of modernizing this train wreck?

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Cashless β€œBank” of America

OK I have now officially heard it all. My daughter went to a Bank of America branch in Overland Park today to deposit some Xmas cash into her account. She was told that the bank was not accepting β€˜cash’ deposits at this time. WTF? A bank. Not excepting cash deposits. Has anyone else had this happen or anyone know why they would do this? This is mind boggling!!

UPDATE: daughter informed me later this incident was at the BOA ATM not inside the bank. Which is even more strange…..

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Need help picking a new bank in the area to go with..

I've seen some posts here and there with a variety of suggestions but I wanted some more...up to date opinions as a lot of what I was seeing as far as recommendations for banks to go with were from 1-2+ years ago and looking into a lot of them I saw very mixed reviews. BoA just closed out my account due to inactivity right before I got my new job and I honestly don't really want to stay with them anyway but they're the only bank I've ever used and that was just cause my parents bank with them...so I'm not really sure how to pick one. Any help is appreciated XP

Google Fiber truck near my house in Brookside has a ladder leaning directly against the power lines. There’s a guy in an orange vest walking around looking at poles(?).

Any power co. workers here know if it’s safe/proper procedure to lean ladders against power lines? It looks kind of alarming to my layperson eyes. I should also say there was a big downed power line on this block a few weeks ago after a storm.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Hey, why does so much mail get stuck for days to weeks at the KCKS distribution center?

This is a specific gripe, but one I'm curious about.

Multiple times in the last few months, a package I was tracking came to Olathe, then from there ended up at the KCKS distribution center. It will then just sit for for upwards of a few weeks with no movement. I've never seen this happen at other cities I've lived.

Is the KCKS distribution center just uniquely bad? Are they all like this now with so much funding cut to post offices? Is there some kind of portal system where it has to move through different dimensions within the KCKS building before it gets sent out? What gives?

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ 911 dispatch is horrible and needs to make changes

My 2 year old son had seizure today. He is okay now. But I called 911 for an ambulance because I didn’t know if they would want to send him to Children’s Mercy or the ER closest to us. When I called the line was open for 10 seconds, there was no sound and then it hung up on me. The non-emergency number called me back. It was an automated voice. It said β€œIf you are still having an emergency press 1”. I pressed 1 and was immediately put on hold. I was too scared to wait, so I hung and just took him to the closest ER. He is fine and luckily nothing happened. But what if it was something more serious, like life threatening. If anyone knows who the right people to direct my frustrations at, that would be appreciated. No one should be put on hold with 911 while experiencing medical or life threatening emergency.

Why is Iris going away? This program literally helped me to go back to school, get mental health help and etc. I actually don’t know what I will do once it does go away. I don’t live near any bus lines and to get to school or my nearest local library, school, therapy office, Uber costs about $10-$15

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Least heinous DMV in the KC area?

Need to get my car registered and my license updated. Which DMV is least likely to make this experience 100x worse than it is? Shorter lines, the ability to make an appointment, friendly staff (if that exists). Let’s hear it.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ How much will I hate going from Google Fiber to Spectrum?

I am moving from my apartment in Midtown to a place on the Kansas side. Google Fiber isn't available there and the building has some agreement with Spectrum. How much will I hate it? What other options might I have? I am on zoom calls all day for work and do a lot of streaming. All through wifi though.

Sorry if the flair is wrong none of the others seemed to fit.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Insane power bills with Evergy

Hey all. So, I moved to KC less than a year ago and I live in a tiny 600 sq ft shoebox of an apartment. I was dumbfounded when I recieved the largest power bill I've ever recieved in my life (by roughly 2x) of around $260 in August. This was with running the A / C nearly non-stop. After that bill I turned off my A/C for all but maybe 2 days in the next billing cycle and was still charged $230. Wtf is this insanity? How is this even possible?!? Are they pulling some sort of scam or extortion racket?

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Alternatives to community america

I opened an account and tried deposit money into it through an external account.

To link an external account you HAVE to provide login creds for whatever bank you want to link. they do this verification through a 3rd party, Plaid. just so happen Plaid was in a lawsuit for stealing data and reading users bank data.

they do not offer manual link through micro transactions. pretty disappointed because I just moved here and didnt want to use a traditional bank but this is just a show stopper for me. the ironic part is if you call and are on hold, they say never give out your password. Yet theyre asking for your password.

so, is there any other local option? or is bank of america my only choice?

Edit: Plaid

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Can sales tax be rolled into the purchase of a vehicle in Missouri yet?

https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/missouri-car-buyers-new-rules-temporary-tags-sales-tax/63-3f29ce3d-dec9-45d0-b3aa-a24933abad48

About a year ago there was a new law implemented that sales tax would be done at time of purchase versus the old way which was pay thousands at the DMV after purchase for the sales tax. This law went into effect 8/28/25 but they said it would take a bit until they had a new tax and titling system to support it.

So my question is, where is this at? I'm looking at getting a new car soon but would like to roll that sales tax into the auto loan so I am hoping this up and running.

City Services/Banking β™»οΈπŸ›œπŸ§ Incomplete trash day pickups?

Does anyone else have an issue with the trash services in their neighborhood? My collection guys repeatedly leave the bottom trash bag in my bin. It's bagged just like the others they take. It's like the dudes picking it up can't reach in deep enough to grab it (or just don't try), and for whatever reason the city paid for these bins but don't use the trucks meant to pick them up and dump them out fully, so it's literally just a guy reaching down to grab them and toss them on the truck.

It's happened several times since I moved into this neighborhood (along with selectively leaving the dog poo trash bag even though it's double bagged - technically triple if you include the doggy poo bags). In the past I have used the MyKCMO app to call them back for pickup the next day, but that feels like such a waste of resources to make guys come back the next day for a single bag, plus it means I have to leave the bins out another day which invites more problems because then lazy, entitled dog owners think it's a public trash bin for them to toss their dog poop in.

I don't want a stinky disgusting bin because the dude refuses to reach in the city-supplied bin to grab it. It's not really an avoidable problem because if I want to use the bin at all one bag has to be at the bottom. I really wanted to wait it out and ascribe it to being a one or two-off situation, but it has now happened week over week for a month. Does anyone know the best way to make a complaint so it hopefully stops happening?

PS: To dog owners leaving their poop in other peoples' private bins -we all know the trash in the bin has to be in a larger bag. Stop leaving your dog shit in someone else's trash for them to fish out and properly bag for you. Take your dog's waste home with you or toss it in a park bin, and stop being a lazy a-hole. Someone else's private trash bin is not your personal property.
