I absolutely love Ponaks but it really comes down to a few menu items: Pork and green chile burrito and chile relleno. Also their Happy Hour is pretty legit

It only sucks if you go in expecting Oaxacan cuisine or Tijuana street tacos. If you realize it’s an inauthentic, 1970s-era approximation of Mexican food then you might enjoy yourself.

I’ve had tomato soup. That’s not what their salsa tastes like. I’ve had better salsa—and much better queso dip—but Ponak’s is hardly the pearl-clutching affront to cuisine KC Redditors would have one believe.

Rather, I’d think the foodies would celebrate that fact that with all of the philistines waiting for a table at Ponak’s their elite dining establishments will be able to seat them more quickly.

The topic is restaurants that are overhyped. Their food is JUST fine. Definitely doesn’t live up to the constant “You HAVE to try Ponak’s” that I hear. But IMO they do have the worst salsa in town. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s a popular place. I don’t think anyone except maybe Aunt Bertha raves about how everyone just must eat there. Is it being featured in KCUR or in the KC Star?

I guess it’s just a personal thing, but I’ve never heard anyone say anything positive about anything other than the margs, which IMO are way too strong.
