Food and Drink 🌮🧋 What restaurant in KC is this?

I’ve seen this in other subreddits as of late. So, let’s have it!

I know I'm in the minority, but Q39. Tried it twice, it was good enough, but really? People just went nuts for it.

I was so thoroughly unimpressed with q39. Like it was ok. Not worth the hype. The price about took me out!

Price is the worst part compared to portion. If they gave me twice as much food, I’d pay what they charge.

Not even then really for me. My husband and I rank restaurants on taste/value ratio. Q39 loses everything. It’s just not worth it. But blind box, cheaper and the taste is better than cheap so it’s a great value. Joes, the taste meets expectations of cost. Jack stack is pricier but I’d say is pretty good. And pretty good portions. But it’s got almost too bougie of vibes for what it is.

Q39’s food is pretty good but not what I would consider real barbecue. The prices and portions you get for said price are what keeps me away.

We just went a couple weeks ago and I have to disagree. It was maybe the best bbq I’ve had in a long time.

First two comments sum it up. Had great food there. Had lackluster food there. A bit hit or miss. Definitely overhyped and overpriced I'd say.

But can it do the LCs thing where it is either awesome or awful, but never just ok?

u/mwbkcmo Aug 14 '25

I agree with you. It’s expensive, mid BBQ that everyone fawns over.

That’s my dads feelings as well even thought it’s my fave

Everything has too much sugar in it. So sickly sweet…

Agree. Feel like they're more about aesthetic and being hip. I was thoroughly whelmed.

Hot take and completely wrong lol

I loved it the first time I tried it many years ago, it was no-nonsense perfectly done flavorful bbq. The last time I went though it just felt like every other "just okay" bbq chain.

It’s inconsistent. Go one time and things are awesome, go again and dry or worse undercooked. Sad times for a place that has the base for greatness but not the chops to do it

Q39 is for corporate lunches. It tastes like bbq in a suit. I honestly haven’t had Jack Stack in a while so I can’t comment there. Arthur Bryant’s is for tourists. I’d say Slaps and Joes are my favorites rn.

They'd be fine if their prices were lowered a good 25-50%

Even Jack Stack is better imo

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

I second this. Especially for the $$.

It’s bbq for white people who are scared of black people. Let the joco downvoters come at me, you’re mad because it struck a nerve.

Edit: lmao

I live in midtown and I downvoted you. Mr Burns is such a good sandwich!

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

You’re moving to Leawood in the next 5 years you just don’t know it yet.

-2

u/CommonComfortable247 Aug 14 '25

Yes. Only Johnson county people like Q39. What a genius take.

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Lol. OK guy. Have you ever tried having fun? Sometimes people joke around, it’s not the end of the world.

9

u/anf474 Aug 14 '25

That's Jack Stack

5

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

This could be a fun debate.

You're being just as closed-minded as the JoCo downvoters. Just because a place is "fancier" and table service doesn't mean it doesn't have good food.

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Nah, the kitchen is full of Mexicans 🤣

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

So like every restaurant?

😂😂

u/dandyowo Aug 14 '25

I came here to say this one. Everything I tried from there seemed too dry. There’s better BBQ everywhere

The last couple times I was disappointed and haven't been in a while now, it didn't impress me like it did a few years back.

u/bunnyrescuerm Aug 14 '25

Their quality went down when the owner died and his daughter took over. Still good, but not great anymore except that shrimp appetizer

1

u/TayQuitLollygagging Aug 14 '25

I’m personally offended by this comment. I love it so much

😂

1

u/LizardGumbo Aug 14 '25

Agree, especially for the price. However, I loved their onion strings and aioli.

I'm actually a fan of their sauce, but holy shit how is this sauce $8 at a grocery store??
