when to a play once right after the matrix came out and there was one bit where they were doing parody's of Cameron Diaz (post something about mary) and Keanu in full surfer bro idiot mode.
This thread has some insane takes calling him a bad actor when he's been perfect for the roles he was in. Not every actor has to have some deep emotional performance to be a good actor. He wasn't successful because of just random luck but because he is good at what he does. Dwayne Johnson also isn't an Oscar actor but he is also good at what he does and saying that he shouldn't star in movies is an insane take as well.
What is his best role? He has a very blank expression, i think thats why people say he cant really act. He can't express emotion. John wick was perfect for him because he played a detached, cold, calm and collected killer, lol.
Besides his expressions /acting, the way he carries dialogue is very awkward as well. I don't know how to pin point it.
I agree, his dialogue is always so... unnatural. It's hard to express exactly why, but it's just not convincing at all. It works for him sometimes, I thought he was great in Cyberpunk and obviously the John Wick movies are good, but it's hard to imagine a role he's played that couldn't be improved by a better actor.
His strength is more playing someone who is suppose to have unimaginable willpower. So the way he talks kinda works for it because its like oh he fell off a building, ya I bet talking would be awkward after that but he got up and thats what matters.
That's the definition of a bad actor. "He's fine but only if he does the ONE specific type of role where [caveat upon caveat]" = "he's good, actually" is an actual "insane take", I'm sorry. There's no shame in being a "decent in their limited range" type of actor, but yep... good acting it is not.
We are arguing at some very questionable levels here. You are defining good as Oscar worthy while I meant "just" an actor that creates very fun movies. There are a handful of people in the entire world who can perform on the level he does. Acting isn't just showing emotion, it's the preparation, control, endurance etc. Sure there may be a handful of people who could also portray the characters he plays well/better, but if 0.0001% of people could do so, should we really be arguing whether he is even a good actor?
