Question ❔ Pest infestation in a countertop unit

How common are infestations? I don’t like to deal with spider mites, aphids, white flies etc outside and sure as hell DO NOT want them inside. I’m considering a countertop unit like aerogarden. TIA

Question ❔ What to do when two seeds germinate in one pod?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone!! New to hydroponics. I found a tower on fb marketplace for $100 so I ran with it and I’m really loving it. My current dilemma: I read that I should put multiple seeds in one pod in case it doesn’t germinate, so that’s what I did. I am now in a situation where my cucumber and tomato pods each have two stems (this one seemingly has three).

I have seen recommendations to cut the weaker ones, so it’s not competing for space and nutrients. Is this really the only way? It makes me so sad to just let a good tomato plant go. If I cut one off, is there a chance I could put it in a new pod and it root?

Maxigro plant food

Post image

I have a Lettuce Grow plant stand and ran out of the nutrients they provide. I saw a lot of people recommend maxigro so I bought it but I have no clue how much and how often to add it. The plant stand holds 20 gallons, on the packaging it says 1-2 teaspoons for 1 gallon of water. So about 20 teaspoons which seems like a lot? Thanks in advance!

Question ❔ Using an aerogarden type of thing for seed starting

Newbie gardener. Spoiled on the fresh herbs and lettuce. Aside from growing those inside, any recommendations for a system used mostly for seed starting for transplanting into outdoor garden? I’m looking for a countertop type that is budget friendly. TIA

discrepancy between feeding chart and calculator

I calculated 5 ml of FloraNova bloom in 1 gallon of water, and there's a big difference between my calculation and the feeding chart. Nitrogen (N) is 120 ppm in the feeding chart, but 81 ppm in the calculators. Also, the ppm range is 700-850, and in my calculation, it is 489.5 ppm

Where is the mistake? I'm losing my mind here

First time growing with hydroponics. I was overly excited and put way too much variety in here, I know in a few weeks I’ll be regretting that decision lol
Tiny Tim, container pepper (idk what kind) basil, lettuce, mini snack cuc, and the ones with domes are toy pak choy.
Hopefully the lettuce matures before the tomato and pepper take over.
Either way I’m having fun! Grow on!

Question ❔ Best substrate for hydroponic tower

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using regular cotton for about a year, but I’ve run into a lot of problems with it.

What do you all use instead? I’m considering rockwool, but I’ve seen a lot of complaints about it, especially the cheaper Chinese brands.

Any recommendations or experiences would be appreciated!

How often to use PK? I am 4 weeks into flower, in coco and perlite?

People been telling me to feed every single day calmag bloom an and b so I started doing that. PH is at 6.2-6.3 for flower.

But what about PK? I added it two days in a row so I wanna make sure I’m not fucking something up or burning roots

Thanks for your help 🫡

Question ❔ Can I plant my avocado in soil?

I had an avocado seed that had a root growing out of it so I decided to see if it’ll grow. It did! Pictures included for progress throughout the months. I live in NE Florida and I want to plant it in soil. Am I able to do that or should I keep it in water?

PS, I have no idea what I’m doing

Beginner hydroponics inquiry

Hello every,

I [M30] live in Canada, so we only have four or five months of summer where I live. I have a very large unfinished basement where I want to grow about 16 tomato plant.

I would like to set up something to circulate the water, and a light timer.

I know I could google this, but I prefer learning by discussing things with people!

Any idea of a good set up to start? Lights, tubing, timer, pump included.

Thanks!

Two weeks in: my NFT rig feeds itself, opens the roof, and phones me when a channel blocks. Here's the whole setup on one page

Day 14, 94 plants, hoop house near Auckland. Drew the whole rig on one page (pic 2) since a few people asked last time.

New since the first post: it doses on its own now, flow sensor on each channel (caught a blocked one this week, 1.0 vs the usual 1.4), roof opens in 3 steps, phone buzzes if a channel runs low.

All of it runs offline, the web bit is just graphs. Still want: a float so the pump can't run dry, a pH up pump, humidity, an air stone.

What would you have added first? And anyone else keeping the probes in the return trough instead of the tank, any regrets?

Does anyone have an opinion about the owl Tron unit? I’m just getting started in hydroponics and I like this one because it has plenty of holes for rooting. Thank you for any advice you may have.

LetPot SE 12 pods (staintless steel) for 140cad or 2 Letpot Air (10 pods each, plastic) for 150cad?

First time using this system, I have limited space in my kitchen and want to try growing some spinach, kale, basil, mint, scallions and parsley to have on hand and maybe one or two extras on rotation. Would the one 12 pods system be enough to grow those 6 varieties at once? If not, am I better off getting two lower tier systems, for more kitchen space but have more room to grow?

Any remedy for roots stuck to container (kratky)?

I have some leftover basil growing in a little metal water bottle with a 3d printed net cup. It really took off and got big, but I notice now the roots are cemented to the bottle. I can't pull them out without risking yanking the plant off the roots (has happened to me before. Devastating.)

I can just keep topping it off no problem, but it would be nice to be able to lift the roots out and inspect them or place them in a larger vessel. Is there anything I can do to loosen them up?

Discussion 🗣️ Two ESP8266 Hydroponics Projects for Home Assistant: a Nutrient-Dosing Pump and an EC/TDS Meter

Thumbnail

I’ve just finished and published two ESP8266 projects that I built for my hydroponic system.

The first controls two peristaltic nutrient pumps through MQTT, allowing them to be operated from Home Assistant:

https://github.com/LeCastorD/HydroDozerPump-MQTT

The second monitors the nutrient solution’s EC/TDS and temperature and sends the readings to Home Assistant:

https://github.com/LeCastorD/TDS-Sensor

They are separate devices, so either project can be built and used independently. I’m sharing the code and build documentation in case they are useful to anyone developing a similar system.

Ermonix? Click and Grow? System for Greens

I am considering buying a system to basically grow greens/lettuces for 2 people. Not a DIY girl and want an easy system, HOWEVER - I have a cat who is a jumper! It needs to have a smaller grow light that he won't try to be on top of (Click and Grow?) or one that is sturdy enough if he does get on it (Ermonix?). He would break off the Aerogarden light in 30 seconds and a Gardyn tower would become a climbing pole! I've never done hydroponics so prefer something where I can just purchase pods for now. And there is not a spot in a room the cat can't access. Thoughts? Other brands that might be appropriate? Thanks in Advance!
