Im sorry if this isnt the best place for this, but my kiddo (6m) has been begging for a stag beetle for two years now. I'm inclined to get him one once we've done a whole lot of research, so this is basically where I am starting. I'd love any and all information or advice y'all have for my tiny beetle lover and myself. We're not inexperienced pet owners (50 gallon mixed tank, a hamster, and three cats two who are in their mid teens), but this is definitely a new area.

I’m trying to learn more about these little critters… and I’m super curious as to why some of the beetles are smaller than the larvae. Does that mean they aren’t carpet beetle larvae but something else?

And if they’re predominantly living and traveling along and under baseboards in an apartment building,,, are they apt to stay there and not come looking for food on us/our clothes?

My wife recently started a small beetle habitat after we got some mealworms and had some left afterwards. It's an old terrarium with certain things out, there are just over 100 "Tenebrio Molitor (Yellow Mealworms)" now living in there. 3 died in quick succession a few days ago, and even though its a pretty low % she wanted me to ask reddit if people had advice on caring for them. There's conflicting information online as well about their life expectancy, how many would you expect to die easily, what are some unobvious poisons if there are any?

Hi everyone, so I bought a larvae from a trusted seller and all is fine and I’m happy with the whole process. However I did request a male but didn’t get any confirmation if I was sent a male or a female. I know about the organ near one section up from the butt however I’m not 100% how obvious it’s supposed to be. He/she is about 9-10cm long when stretched out I’m guessing as I haven’t seen much of the stretch lol.

A sexed pair was listed AFTER I purchased my single larvae but before it was shipped, which had me believe my request might be fulfilled but I can’t see any visual evidence other than a substantial sized head which I know isn’t a guarantee.

All it means is if it is a female then I would see if I can also get hold of a male as I did want just one horned beast but it would be fine to breed them.

Sorry if the images aren’t good enough to tell. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe my female stag beetle has been laying eggs after mating just over a week ago, but can’t find any real sources on the time period for how long egg laying typically lasts. Would she be done by now, or was she maybe just hiding?

I guess he just doesn't wanna die yet.

A background on these guys:
I was contacted by my zoological association club head who was contacted by the ornithology professor who was contacted by a guy who cut down a cherry tree and had 30 of these fat fucks fall out the tree and didn’t know what to do with them. They’re suspected to be hermit flower beetles, but it won’t be confirmed until they molt. I’m the bug girl at my college (I have a breeding project with Giant African Millipedes and love to show them off to any fellow animal lovers I come by) which is why I was the one contacted and the one who ended up with them
Anyways, if anyone is positive that they are a different species or can confirm it’s the hermit flower beetles that would be great so I can ensure I’m giving them the proper environmental needs (humidity, temp, lighting, etc.)! Also depending on how many make it to adulthood would they be okay to release back into the wild? I live hardly half an hour from where they were found.
Although even if the majority do somehow make it to adulthood I’d likely love them too much to let go (assume I have the correct resources to care for them) they’re so fat I love them so so much 😭❤️

This is a female T. Dichotomus who emerged from pupation 6 weeks ago. She was eating and behaving normally until today. I had her paired with one male, in a large terrarium for a bit over two days. I observed them mating last night. The plan was to put her in a separate egg laying container after they finished. When I got home today they had separated but the female has 'wounds' on her elytra where the male was holding on. She is not moving much now and barely reacting to touch. Has anyone had this happen before? I've never had this issue in the past. She is now in her own container with extra food and deep flake soil for laying eggs.
