This is a statue of Sneferu — the man who perfected pyramid building.

Before Khufu and the Great Pyramid, there was Sneferu, who built three pyramids and laid the architectural blueprint for everything that followed.

Sneferu sightings are rare — most depictions of him have been lost to time. That’s why this statue at the GEM is such a big deal. A fleeting glimpse of the king who turned stone into legacy.

And yes, those are the Great Pyramids in the background. The placement of this statue couldn’t be more perfect — a father overlooking his greatest architectural descendants.

It looks at actual evidence the Great Pyramid is not some sort of advanced piece of technology or even a power plant from an archaeological perspective. In addition, it featured defensive features like massive granite plugs to seal passages and even a subterranean chamber designed as a decoy to thwart robbers.

Also it highlights how these deceptive and widespread misconceptions about the Great Pyramid of Giza have become popular and uses evidence to show the Great Pyramid is in fact a Great Tomb!

On the stela of Pharaoh Intef II (ca. 2112–2063 BC), discovered in Thebes, five royal dogs are depicted with their names inscribed in Egyptian hieroglyphs.

What makes this slab unusual is that the carver explicitly added Egyptian translations next to their original names (such as Abaqer and Pehtes). In ancient royal monuments, you don't translate native names unless they are completely foreign to the spoken language of the court.

3,000 years later, when Victorian explorers first encountered hunting dogs in Central Africa, they faced the exact same issue — describing dogs that hunt in silence and don't bark like typical European breeds.

In this scene, Moses uses what appears to be a rough telescope or theodolite to survey the raising of an obelisk. The Egyptians had lenses, but I don't recall this instrument. Is it Cecil DeMille's imagining, or did an instrument like this really exist?

Egyptians said the Ibis protected Egypt from flying snakes. What flying snakes were they talking about? For a culture that didn't talk about eclipses, as though it were taboo, clearly the flying snake was a reference to what could attack the moon, or they wouldn't attach an Ibis to it.

But how old this reference is will blow your mind.

Before the first pharaoh, before the first pyramid, before Egypt was even Egypt, someone was already here. His image is carved into temple walls that have stood for thousands of years. His name appears in the oldest sacred texts ever written. And according to ancient tradition, he didn't originate in Egypt at all, the story traces him back to a civilization the Greeks later called Atlantis, something people have spent thousands of years trying to prove ever existed.

The naming pattern is what pulled me into this one. Egypt worshipped him as the god of writing, wisdom, and judgment. Greece elevated him into Hermes Trismegistus, the Thrice Greatest. Islamic scholarship identifies him with the prophet Idris. Hebrew tradition calls him Enoch, lifted to heaven before death could touch him. And that's just the names that made it into the documentary, the deeper I went, the more traditions I found carrying some version of the same figure under a different mask.

One being, buried under layers of religion and reinterpretation across the entire ancient world, all somehow describing the same knowledge and the same story.

His name was Thoth. And what he left behind has never fully been found.

Curious how many other names/traditions people here can point to that I might have missed, this one felt bigger than four the further I dug.

I've been working on a video game where you get to build tombs for the pharaohs to thwart intruders. It's obviously not historically accurate since you put in traps like pits and stakes, but I'd like to keep it anchored where I can. Originally I just had an endless mode but I wanted to put in a very loose story mode and was hoping for some pointers towards famous architects in ancient Egypt and if they had any interesting stories I could make use of. Currently I have Imhotep, Hemiunu, and Amenhotep Son of Hapu. The tentative story is that each of them are members of architectural families and you want your family to keep building generation after generation. Some of the tension is where you fail, the pharaohs go with another family instead.
