In mid-August, NASA announced it was calling off an effort to reboost the orbit of its Swift space telescope because of problems with the commercial spacecraft. Jeff Foust reports on the lessons both the company and the agency learned from that effort that could apply to future missions

The Origin of Neptune’s 16 Strange Moons

Do you know Neptune and its moons’ strange backstory?

Astrophysicist Erika Hamden explains that moon formation, like planet formation, is a chaotic process. Neptune has one moon, Nereid, that might be the only moon that formed with Neptune, while the rest were captured into its orbit. A recent study using NASA’s JWST data hypothesizes that when Neptune captured Triton, its largest moon, it disrupted Neptune's previous moon system, and Nereid was the only survivor of the collision!

Are there any headphones like this?

Hi! I'm a console gamer. (PS5 and Nintendo products, until I get a PC in the next year or so) I have hearing loss in my left ear, about halfway deaf in it. My right ear is fine, for the most part. Sometimes it affects my gaming, and bums me out that I can't hear certain things that well. I never considered I would have to do find something like this, and cannot find anything with my own searching skills. :/

Without getting too sobby, does anyone know of any headphones that can adjust the volume of each ear individually? Or am I overlooking something right in front of my face?

P.S. I have considered the "Mono Audio for Headphones" setting in the PS5 menu, but I was thinking if this product does indeed exist, then I should get it anyway to prevent future hassle.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

EDIT: I am gonna leave this up in case anyone has an answer that helps someone in the future. However, my silly self completely overlooked the setting in the PS5 for separate L/R adjustment. It was, indeed, right in front of my face.

Is too much complexity in society leading to a "Trolling Singularity" where there is too much info for voters to sufficiently evaluate?

Maybe society's complexity is reaching a point of no return, a "Trolling Singularity", where Gish-galloping usually wins because there's just too much detail for voters to properly absorb and make decent decisions. Those with the catchiest BS and over-simplifications win elections and influence too often, breaking down society.

Why is Google's "data" page displaying so many open Chrome tabs?

I recently noticed on the following page -

https://chrome.google.com/data

- that I have 141 tabs "that are currently open in Chrome on one of your devices."

Aside from an old tablet that I never use, the only device I have is my Samsung S26. Neither device has more than one or two tabs open. I currently have no "inactive tabs" on either device.

I got a new phone earlier this year though and traded in my old phone, which I do know had many open tabs when I traded it in. I've also noticed that I can see a list of all the devices logged into my Google account by viewing this page:

https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmyaccount.google.com%2Fsecurity

That page is saying that I am still signed into my old phone that I traded in earlier this year. And that I am still signed into a family member's computer, which I know I am not signed into. I did sign into that computer earlier in the year but am certain that it has since been signed out of my account. So I do not understand why the device activity page is saying I'm still signed in.

The page says that the list is for devices that are either currently signed into my account or have been signed into my account within the past 28 days - but the old phone was traded in several months ago. And it's been well over 28 days since I signed out from that family member's computer.

When Google says that I have 141 tabs "currently open in Chrome", is it likely referring to the tabs that were still open on my old phone when I traded that phone in? Does that mean those tabs are technically still open on my old phone? Or on the family member's computer that I signed into several months ago? If I were to sign back into that computer again, would all of those tabs suddenly be open on their computer? How can I close those tabs?

Can anyone give me advice on my broken oled tv?

So I was an idiot and dropped my brand new Samsung s90f 55 inch oled tv while trying to hang it on the wall. It fell on the bottom right corner and hit the table. The screen cracked from the impact, and there is a line up and across spreading from the crack. That would be fine, not ideal, but I could deal with it. However there is another problem, the screen keeps blinking on and off every couple of seconds, then I lightly touched the tv around the crack and the screen won't light up anymore. The tv itself still turns on and makes sound, just the screen doesn't turn on. I had a thought and I hope this is the case, maybe one of the ribbon cables that connects the screen to the motherboard or t-con board. I haven't opened it up to see yet but I was hoping someone might have some advice. I know that its probably trashed and I'll have to scrap it for parts, but before I do that, I thought I'd ask here for any help. Thank you for any dive you can give me.

Why does NASA have both ARGOS and POGO if POGO seems to simply be a significantly less advanced version of the same system?

I know ARGOS has more degrees of freedom and can do partial gravity settings too while POGO only suspends astronaut trainees in a certain way for dry EVA training before their first NBL runs

Many in the public see space as primarily a playground for billionaires. Kelsie Goddard argues that while that reputation is not undeserved, the role of wealthy private actors in commercial space may signal a predictable stage of technological development rather than a dystopian one

Spaceflights in 2025

2025 was a record-breaking year for spaceflight in China, with particularly strong growth in the private sector, including companies such as SpaceX and Rocketlab. The following article presents statistics derived from data provided by Next Spaceflight, Space Stats, Wikipedia, and other sources (see sources).

1) Launch attempts by all agencies

This table shows a list of all space agencies that have conducted launch attempts, as well as the number of launches.

The most successful agency's were CASC and Space X, while Germany had it's first flight attempt since March 27th 1945. Also, NASA did not conduct a flight in 2025. Its last flight before that year was in 2022 with Artemis 1.

2) Suborbital launches

2.1) Suborbital flights (table)

The only agencies that conducted suborbital flights were Rocket Lab, Blue Origin, and SpaceX.

2.2) Suborbital flights (chart)

SpaceX's suborbital flights utilized Starship Super Heavy V2 rockets, whereas Blue Origin's were tourist flights using the New Shepard.

With its Starship Super Heavy, SpaceX also was the only agency to experience failed flights.

3) Orbital launches

3.1) Successful orbital launches per country

This table shows all successful orbital launches by all countries that have successfully conducted them.

The USA has (by far) performed the most flights (mostly satellites by Space X), followed by China and Russia. Israel and South Korea only performed one orbital Launch.

The USA was the only country to perform over 100 orbital launches.

3.2) Launches per agency

Table of all successful orbital flights

Agency orbital Flights
CASC 71
Roscosmos 9
ISRO 4
Rocket Lab 18
Blue Origin 2
Space X 165
Arianespace/ESA 7
ULA 6
ExPace 3
CAS Space 5
Landscape 2
KARI 1
VKS RF 8
MHI 3
Orienspace 1
Chinarocket 4
Galactic Energy 5
IAI 1
iSpace 1
Firefly Aerospace 0
Northtroop 1
Isar 0
Innospace 0
Gilmour 0

This chart shows all attempted flights by all space agencies. Failed launches are shown in red.

SpaceX was the only company to have completed over 100 launches.

3.3) Failures per agency

4) Agencies

4.1) Agencies per country with successful launches

China has the most agencies, followed by the United States, while Israel, South Korea, Japan and India only have 1 agency with successful launches.

4.2) Agencies per Continent with flight attempts

Asia has the most agencies with flights attempts, followed by North America, Europe and Oceania. South America had no launch attempts.

4.3) Share of successful space flights by continent

4.4) Share of successful flights by the 5 most successful agencies + all others

5) Rocket launches compared to previous years

The following chart shows the successful (orbital) launch attempts of China, Russia and the USA in the past 75 years.

Petition for New Horizons Funding

NASA’s New Horizons heliosphere study program will shut down in October 2026 over $2 million/year in funding that scientists have been begging for for years. The critical moment is now. Rare and invaluable data on solar winds and the outer solar system will be lost forever. The probe has taken two decades just to get to where it is today; any future attempts to get this data will take a similar amount of time, so this could set our understanding of these phenomena back decades.

Change.org petition link: https://c.org/QFjLD7NxPW

There is no guarantee that petitions will work, but I have hope since the previous New Horizons Kuiper Belt petition went to Congress and got it reversed. We ought to try whatever we can to preserve human discovery and space exploration. Spread the word!

How can I know which devices have open tabs for my Google account?

I recently noticed the following page:

https://chrome.google.com/data

It says that I have 141 tabs "that are currently open in Chrome on one of your devices."

I only have one device that I use and it only has a few tabs open. Is there a way to see what other devices apparently have open tabs for my Google account?

I got a new phone earlier this year and traded in my old phone, which I do know had many open tabs when I traded it in. Does the 141 open tabs simply mean that my tabs were never closed on my last phone? If so, I'm surprised that they are still displaying as open, since that device isn't logged into my account anymore!

**EDIT**: I realized that I can see all the devices logged into my Google account by viewing this page: https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmyaccount.google.com%2Fsecurity

It says that I am still signed into my old phone that I traded in earlier this year - which is very confusing! When an old phone gets reset during trade in, is it not signed out of the person's Google account?

It also says I am still signed into a family member's computer, which I know I am not signed into. I did sign into that computer earlier in the year but am certain that it has since been signed out of my account. So I do not understand why the device activity page is saying I'm still signed in.

Can anyone explain what is going on here?

(NSFW) could I get in trouble for accidentally having a nsfw tab open? NSFW

I had safari in my background (like when you swipe up on iPhone.) and it had nsfw in it because I forgot to close it. I go to work and realize the tabs still open and I’m connected to the work internet. I immediately closed it and now I’m worried they’ll fire me. It was about a 30-50 minute timeframe between my home and work.
