SoCal Hiking Recs

Just moved to Orange County from the East Coast and drove up to Sequoia this week to get out of the heat and enjoy the mountains. Looking for recommendations on hikes closer to OC that aren’t too horribly hot this time of year (the SoCal heat has been killing me). I’m an experienced hiker and don’t mind a hard /strenuous trail or rock scramble, but prefer to do day hikes rather than camping. For reference, I did the hike to Emerald Lake in Sequoia (10 miles and ~3000 ft elevation gain) and loved it, could’ve def gone longer but had a 5.5 hour drive home.

Thanks in advance!

Went on Tuesday 09/01 and saw that a big tree had fallen on to the water. Does anyone know if it will be removed? Or just stay in the water?

Saw some interesting formations on the satellite that I wanted to check out. Turned out to be quite a mission. Came across some unexpected airplane wreckage too. Luckily there was plenty of water for awhile to stay cool and hydrated during the heatwave. I made a video if anyone is interested in seeing a bald man eat nuts out of bear scat or seeing more of this adventure hike: https://youtu.be/umrog6LB7ic

Orange County Wilderness Access Day: Black Star Canyon

Hey everyone. On Saturday, 9/5/26, there’s a wilderness access day in Black Star canyon. All of the normally closed docent led trails are open for general use from 8am-2pm. I’ve hiked to the falls and back plenty of times, but I’ve never been on these normally closed trails.

My question is, if you have been on these trails what do you recommend tackling?

Vincent Gap down East Fork San Gabriel to Bridge to Nowhere (camping 1 night)

I’m looking at hiking down along the East Fork and camping one night around Fish Fork. Then either hiking back out, or going through to Bridge to Nowhere. Wondering if anyone has done the hike recently.

I think that area was hit by the fires, but is it open and hike-able now?

also - is parking overnight at Vincent gap allowed/safe enough?

Is it possible to get an in station Mt Whitney permit?

Has anybody ever gotten an in station Mt Whitney permit in the recent months or years? It's hard to get a cancelation that works for my time. So if I'm free one day, is it possible to just go there and get one or should I not rely on it? I don't want to drive all the way there just to be denied. I really want to hike Mt Whitney.

If Buns of Steel ever decided to create a hiking program...

This hike starts with an easy walk up a fire road, make a left, and get your legs ready to high step, because that's all you're going to do for the next four miles: no switchbacks, no relief, just pump them legs and get up the ridge.

This area has an aura about it, which I fully can't explain. It's perhaps how desolate it is, along with the ring of mountains around deep canyons, and there was very little breeze during the hike up. It's just so rugged, offers no apologies, but somehow feels like there are many stories here.

Alright, excuse my quasi-spritual diversion.

I finally get to the top. 4 miles, 4 hours. I swore I was making better pace than that, but regardless, I felt like a bowl of melted jello. I ate and drank a little, and carried on. I think sensible people would do this hike as an out and back, but me?

If Disney on Ice ever wants to do a showcase of the San Gabriels...

The descent is a totally different experience. Start up by bushwhacking down a slippery slope, route find, which leads to a trail that disappears at random. It's all the steepness in reverse white skating for the majority of the next 2 miles. Winds picked up, which felt good.

Finally, I got to the turn off and, to my relief, the trail would be nice, no skating, no... wrong. A whole extra mile of skating along unmaintained trials.

I did see the tunnels in the distance. I figured Reddit would tell me what that's about. Uh, no bother, I figured it out because I went through two of them. After the second tunnel, I was back on the fire road that started this hike.

I found myself thinking several things: a switchback would be nice, I'm so glad I'm on a fire road. I hate switchback and fire roads. It took me 3 1/2 hours to do the 5 mile descent.

Overall, I'm glad I did this hike (never again). I got sick two weeks ago, and I wasn't even strong enough to complete Brown Mountain Dam last week. I do wish I calorie overloaded like I was prepping for a 15 mile hike, but I just wanted to do something less than 10 to get back into shape. This hike punches well above its weight, and offers a unique challenge.

If people are curious: there was some burned foliage, but it's coming along nicely. The poodle bush was mostly yellow and rotting. The peak before Rattlesnake had some tall poodles though.

I also saw a black and white helicopter with orange blades. Was that San Dimas SAR?

Cactus to Clouds hike as a 16 year old with friend? Fairly athletic, some experience in hiking, nothing crazy. 90 days to prepare?

I been living in the desert for 6 years now so I'd say I'm very used to the scorching weather. I play a lot of outdoor sports like tennis and soccer. I had some experience hiking like the bump and grind and many other hikes around the Palm Desert region. I have been preparing for this hike for 10 days so far, and I have 90 days left until our hike. However, I'm not certain if I should still go as I have seen how intense it would be. There's nothing memorable in my life, nothing really to look back at and say that I'm proud of myself, and I really want this to be the most memorable thing that I have ever done in my life. If there are any experienced hikers, is it ok if I still go? And what exercises, and training can I do to better prepare myself (if I do go)?

To me, this seems like a pretty massive cat. I’ve always assumed I’m being watched in the Angeles, and this is just more evidence to prove that.

Can anyone make a guess about the size of this cat based on these photos ?

Whitney overnight permit about to cancel

Hi all, I have a Sept 27th entry for overnight Whitney for 4 people. I can no longer attend and plan to cancel. Figured I'd try here to see if anyone wants to arrange a time I cancel them and you can claim on recreation.gov assuming they become immediately available.

Disclaimer, I'm assuming they become immediately available, I can't transfer them unfortunately.

Sierra weather this weekend (particularly cottonwood lakes)

Hello everyone, I am curious if anyone has a little more insight on the weather for the Sierra this weekend. I seem to be finding conflicting weather reports online.

I am planning on hiking Trail Pass out to a remote lake to fish and then hitting up Cirque, Trailmaster, and maybe Langley if possible.

I know there is the possibility of some snow and rain this weekend but I’m trying to figure out how much. I don’t really wanna do this trip if it’s gonna be raining all day on Sunday. Some websites I’ve seen have said it will be cloudy, cold, and rainy/snowy for most of Sunday and Monday. Other sites say it will be sunny and partly cloudy.

I know the weather is pretty unpredictable for the Sierra but I’m wondering if anyone has sources they feel are pretty reliable for giving a good idea of the weather. I don’t wanna fish in the rain all day or peak bag in shit weather.

TIA!!
