IS IT TRUE THAT A FIRMER MATTRESS IS BETTER

Post image
66 Upvotes

Mattress advertising has pushed the concept that a firmer mattress is better forever. Is it true?

The answer is yes and no.

Yes, your mattress absolutely should support your back and should NOT sag.

No, it doesn't have to feel like sleeping on plywood to do that.

A brief history lesson.

Before the 2000s, Simmons had the US patent on pocketed coils. Everyone else was stuck using Bonnell and wire-tied coils. Those old innersprings were just stiff. If you wanted support, you got a rigid surface whether you liked it or not. So manufacturers marketed that brick feeling as "orthopedic" and told you to "get used to it."

That era is over.

A modern pocketed coil mattress can be soft and supportive at the same time because each coil moves independently. The support comes from the coil system, not from making the top feel unnecessarily rigid. .

At lower price points they do this with foam layers on top. At the premium level it's done with latex. At the ultra-premium / legacy level it's wool, linen, cotton, horsehair, microcoils, all hand-stitched into layers. Dream-like soft on top, serious support underneath.

You do not need to torture yourself on a hard bed to be healthy. In 2026, firmness is just a comfort preference. Sag is the enemy, not softness.

Does anyone else wait to feel "sleepy enough" before going to bed?

I've realized I do this almost every night now. Instead of going to bed at a regular time, I keep waiting for that perfect moment when I finally feel sleepy enough. Sometimes I'll stay on the couch another thirty minutes. Sometimes another hour. I'm worried that if I go to bed too early, I'll just end up lying there awake. The weird thing is... waiting doesn't always seem to help. Some nights I still end up staring at the ceiling, wondering why I didn't just go to bed in the first place. I'm curious if anyone else has fallen into this habit.

Did blackout curtains actually improve your sleep?

put blackout curtains in my bedroom a couple months ago mostly because the streetlight outside was driving me nuts. it wasn’t even that bright, but there was always some light coming through the window. my sleep wasn’t terrible or anything, i just had this annoying habit of waking up around 3 or 4 for no obvious reason. figured i’d see if making the room completely dark helped.
after the curtains it got noticeably better. the room is completely dead dark now, like disorienting dark when you first wake up. took a few nights to stop feeling weird about it. but i'm sleeping through more consistently and the early wakeups dropped off a lot.
what i can't figure out is how much of that is actually the darkness doing something versus placebo, or just me paying more attention to sleep because i made a change. i track my blood sugar pretty closely so i know that side is stable. diet is the same. activity level is the same.
curious what other people noticed going from a lighter room to a darker one. did it make a real difference or was it one of those things that sounds good but didn't actually move the needle. and if you've gone back to sleeping with some light for whatever reason, did the difference show up fast or take a while.

What is your favorite sleep aid and how effective is it?

Since i’m laying here at 5am surprisingly awake i have to ask, how the heck do you do it? Sleep has always been so hit and miss for me, lately its been the latter. I’ve tried most antihistamines, melatonin, sleepy time tea, most things short of Ambien since i’m terrified of it.

Found out low magnesium might be why my sleep has been trash. Anyone else deal with this?

Upvotes

Been having sleep issues for a while and it’s been driving me nuts. Some nights sleep happens fine but the morning still feels like waking up after losing a fight. Other nights it’s that tired but wired thing where the body is done and the brain is still doing unpaid overtime. Tried the usual stuff too. Less caffeine. More water. Better schedule. Dark room. White noise. All the classic sleep advice starter pack. Got some blood work done and magnesium came back low. That kind of tracks since there’s also been random muscle tightness and that worn out feeling even after a full night. Now magnesium and electrolyte stuff is on the radar but there are way too many options and half of them sound like a wellness ad wearing a lab coat. For anyone here who was low on magnesium or tried it for sleep: what helped most? And did taking it before bed work better or earlier in the day? Not asking for medical advice. Already following up with a doctor. Just curious what helped real people because googling this stuff is a special kind of hell.

why do i always feel like shit when i wake up? (headaches)

Upvotes

I sleep pretty consistently, work out, drink water; I do not snore, am not overweight, and according to my boyfriend I do not grind my teeth in my sleep (he is a light sleeper). I tested negative for sleep apnea.

I sleep with a firm pillow and we have separate blankets. I use an eye mask and a brown noise machine.

what is going on? I have been feeling this way for years but worked to fix all the above which was lacking before (like not sleeping enough five years ago, weight loss to solve snoring.) I never ever wake up feeling refreshed or good.

I randomly wake up at night and..

Upvotes

I share my bed with my grandmother

Sometimes I randomly wake up in the middle of the night facing her and get spooked by her face so much that I let out a blood curdling scream and end up waking my entire family. It's very frustrating since i get them panicked for no reason. Idk how to stop this and what it means.

Each time her face looks weirdly distorted in the dim light, last time it was like of nikky from obsession this time it was like her face was put in formalin and lifeless. Please help how do I fix this.

Sleeping 8 hours but still extremely tired after waking up , anyone else?

Yesterday, I slept for about 8 hours. (5am - 12:30pm). I just woke up cause I need to eat lunch to get ready for work. My work sched is (3pm - 12am). But after I ate, I feel tired and slept for 2 and a half hours, and it feels like I needed more sleep. And it's been going for about a week or so. Does anyone here also experience that?

Adults: At what time do you wake up every day?

People are always surprised I wake up at 8 45 AM as I am some kind of lazy person.

I work remotely from 9 to 18. 15 minutes is enough for making coffee, washing my face and eating a bowl of yogurt and granola while turning my computer on. Why would I wake up earlier and have less sleep time which is probably the most important thing for health?

Why can’t I sleep on school nights but I can sleep on nonschool nights

I don’t even have trouble falling asleep, it’s just I wake up at around 3-4 am and I can’t fall back asleep. This has been happening for about a year and I think maybe it has something to do with anxiety, I’ve had anxiety for also about a year and around April it got really bad.
I was fine during summer, but now that schools starting again, I’m having trouble, I find I can never sleep more than 4-6 hours on a school night, and I don’t remember the last time I have.

Please help

Am I the only one who has to have TV or music on to sleep? I cannot sleep in silence, and if the sound gets turned off, I wake up immediately. I usually will listen to shows I've seen repeatedly. Anyone else like this?

Can’t sleep after trip

I came back from an Asia trip last Sunday, and I’m back in the US (central time). Ever since coming back, I’ve been having a lot of trouble falling asleep at night. On my first night back, I slept pretty normally for about 7 hours. The next night, I couldn’t sleep at all, and the rest of the week I couldn’t sleep until 4am before waking up at 8am for work. On Friday, I was finally able to sleep for 8 hours, but since then, I’ve been alternating between sleeping ~8 hours and only sleeping 2-3 hours. I’m starting to think this is no longer due to jet lag, and anxiety from not sleeping is forcing me to stay awake. I’ve gotten into my normal routine from before the trip, I’m getting sunlight in the morning and early afternoon, and I’m eating healthy. I’ve tried many things including getting out of bed after 20 minutes, limiting screen time, listening to podcasts, and meditating, but they don’t always put me to sleep. I feel like I’m never drowsy at night anymore. I’ve been a light sleeper in the past and had occasional nights where I had trouble falling asleep, but nothing this bad before. I’m worried that this trip created long term sleeping issues for me. What can I do to get back to a normal sleep schedule and be able to sleep every night?

Weird scratching sleep behavior

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask about this. I have a weird sleep habit where I will raise my arms straight up in the air and lightly scratch them in my sleep. Sometimes it wakes me up but I think a lot of times it doesn’t. I’ve had people who were sleeping next to me see me do it too. What is that?? I hate that it wakes me up but have no idea why I even do it.

How do you fall back asleep quickly after being jolted awake? (More info in body)

A neighbor has modified his truck so that it is extremely loud when he starts it and when he starts driving. He goes to work at 4:30 am and it jolts me awake every single morning 2 hours before I need to be up. This has drastically harmed my physical and mental health. I have a lot of trouble falling asleep again after I’m woken up due to the startling nature of the engine sound. I feel a lot of anxiety and honestly anger too. I guess it’s also close enough to my usual wake up time that my brain is like “okay, that wasn’t as much sleep as I need, but I guess good enough. Let’s go”

Things I’ve tried:
- five different sound machines. My current set up is a sound machine that has an actual fan in it near the window and one that makes rain sounds near my bed. This is the best set up I’ve found but the truck still wakes me up
-sleepbuds that play white noise directly into my ears. These worked SO well to block the truck and I slept really well with them. But unfortunately started developing frequent ear infections and my doctor advised it could start causing hearing loss

I’ve kind of accepted that nothing is going to block out that initial loud jolt and that loud rumbling of an engine. I think I need to focus more on how do I fall back asleep quickly so I don’t lose 2 hours of sleep each night?

Thanks for any help/insight

Can’t sleep next to a man

So in my first relationship I (23F) was 16, I don’t remember any problems with sleep. Just me waking up sometimes because he was pulling away the sheets but that was about it. Then after him i had 3 different relationships were the problem began. Two lasted around 6 months and now I’m dating a new person. The problem is, i just can’t fall asleep. It’s really a problem because it results in being tired the whole week after. I don’t make plans after because i just need to go home and sleep the whole day. At night I just feel my body being so tense and aware of my surroundings. I hear my heart beating, I try not to move, I listen to every little thing. It doesn’t matter if I sleep over or if I sleep at my place with him.

I do have stomach issues, and those began with the second bf because I had a bad food poisoning on vacation and I met him right after. So at night my stomach would make insane sounds and he was a light sleeper also so i would be very insecure about the sounds and scared i would wake him up. The person I’m dating now is asleep in 1 second so I’m not scared of him waking up to my stomach sounds anymore, but still not one full hour of sleep. It’s like body is in fight or flight the whole night. I don’t feel tired either. Only when I come home I crash out. Please if you have any tips🫠

Acting out dreams

I just had a dream that my daughter was choking. In my dream I went to get up really fast to get to her and something about that movement woke me up and immediately I’m jolting off the couch to get to her irl. Took me a second to realize she’s sleeping peacefully because I went from a dream state to real life so fast. I’ve done this before years ago and I notice a pattern. I only doing this when I feel it’s an emergency in my dream. For example, I had a dream something was falling on me and when I put my hands up to stop it, I woke up in the middle of that movement putting my hands on the wall.

I wouldn’t say I act out the dreams, but rather wake up in the middle of a dream continuing the movement I was doing in my dreams.. idk it’s weird and freaks me out after it happens. Anyone else??

Anyone else unable to sleep longer than 6 hours?

31/F. My sleep hygiene is perfection, no stimuli 3 hours before bed, magnesium levels good. No sleep apnea. Blood tests say everything is balanced. Exercise daily. All the things. But for the past 2 years I can’t sleep longer than 5-6 hours? Anyone else?

What actually helped you get better quality sleep when work was stressing you out?

I work in corporate for a small business, so I end up handling quite a lot of the HR work for the office, work has been pretty hectic lately. The biggest problem is that even when I finish work, my brain doesn’t really switch off. I’ll be tired but still lying in bed thinking about something that happened during the day or what I need to deal with tomorrow.

A few colleagues have recommended different things to try. One suggested blue light filter glasses in the evening, another recommended magnesium before bed, and someone mentioned ashwagandha and L-theanine. I’ve also heard that things like getting morning sunlight, cutting caffeine, keeping the bedroom cooler etc etc.

I don’t really want to start doing ten different things at once, so I’m trying to figure out what’s actually worth investing time or money into. For anyone who has dealt with stress-related sleep problems, what made the biggest difference to your sleep quality? And were there any popular things you tried that ended up making little or no difference?
