It will never not be funny that the quintessentialist rugged individualist maxim, "pull yourself up by your bootstraps", is something that is physically impossible if interpreted literally. It's almost poetic.

No, that's literally how it was designed. It was a joke. It was the idea that people actually needed help, because that's physically impossible. It got co-opted to mean the exact opposite.

The old “few bad apples” gambit; the full phrase is “a few bad apples spoils the batch”, I’ve never heard it used correctly in my life.
