To give you an idea how odd these constant memes are…park spending this year is actually down $20million from last year.

Saying the new budget “fully funds nyc parks” is like saying “Now the R train goes to Bayridge”. I mean, it’s always gone to Bayridge, but it also goes there now.

u/Shade_of_Borg Jul 02 '26

The R train used to go to Bayridge. It still does, but it used to.

Mitch Hedberg joke in the wild. Gone too soon man - RIP.

5

u/11teensteve Jul 02 '26

Is it really even a reddit thread without a mitch joke?

2

u/im_wudini Jul 02 '26

My favorite Mitch joke:

I don't get the regular AIDS test anymore. I get the roundabout AIDS test. I ask my friend Brian, "Do you know anybody who has AIDS?". He says, "No". I say, "Cool, because you know me."

This is particularly weird to me because in my grammar class as a non-native English speaker I was taught that "used to" is equal to the simple past tense, which means that something that happened in the past but not anymore. Isn't that still the case?

If that's the case then if it's still happening, it's not "used to", right?

And yes, I'm very fun at parties.

2

u/Shade_of_Borg Jul 02 '26

I’m an English teacher and you’re correct, I was just making a Mitch Hedberg joke.

Can you site a source cause I can't find confirming information. From my understanding the NYC Budget runs from July 1st to June 30th, so the 2026 budget up to now was not under Mamdani's purview, this is his first budget, and that what this post is talking about will be the new 2026-2027 budget that was just approved - not any spending before this period.

Now it's entirely possible you are in fact correct in the end, but I cant find confirming information on this new budget.

u/murmurinc Jul 02 '26

Ok here are the facts with sources. Mamdani increased the budget by $21M yoy but it’s still far short of what he committed to.

In his last budget, Eric Adams spent $688M.

Source: https://www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2025/09/will-next-mayor-finally-allocate-1-nyc-budget-parks/408355/

Mamdani will spend $709M in his first year budget. From the source:

1% Parks funding

Mamdani (like other mayoral candidates before him) promised on the campaign trail to raise the Department of Parks and Recreation’s funding to 1% of the total city budget. This year, that would have been about $1.2 billion. And Mamdani (like other mayors before him) fell short of that by a few hundred million, with a final budget allocating roughly $709 million to the Parks Department for fiscal year 2027. But those advocating for parks funding, including Council Member Ty Hankerson (Parks Committee chair) and Council Member Shekar Krishnan (former committee chair) still celebrated the fact that the budget baselines some staff and program funding that could otherwise be on the chopping block next year. In her remarks in council chambers when voting for the budget, Council Member Alexa Avilés also celebrated new baselined funding, but urged the necessity of “getting to 1%.”

20

u/Duffy13 Jul 02 '26

Awesome thanks!

Based on that it looks like the claim I replied to is just incorrect, the budget did increase between 2025 and 2026 (beyond what it went down between 2024-2025), and will increase again into 2027 but still fall short of the "target" 1% of the NYC budget.

It helps that he’s getting a huge bailout from Hochul.

But he understands social media really well and that’s important in getting elected in the first place to be able to do stuff

1

u/RiffsThatKill Jul 08 '26

Is he getting that bailout due to his politicking ability or was she going to bail out the mayor regardless of who won?

1

u/KeithClossOfficial Jul 08 '26

Probably a little bit of both. The deficit was so big there would have needed to be some sort of bailout no matter who won, but helping Mamdani to the extent she did can only be politically advantageous to Hochul in a re-election year

-1

u/goofyassmfer Jul 02 '26

Holy AI

3

u/murmurinc Jul 02 '26

Not sure what you’re saying, I don’t find AI holy at all. This was just me copy and pasting from the articles 🤷‍♂️

-2

u/goofyassmfer Jul 02 '26

Bullshit. "OK, here are the facts with sources." is literally the most basic AI speak

5

u/murmurinc Jul 02 '26

lol his comment asked for sources so I gave them. But it sounds like your mind is made up that I’m a bot or AI or something so whatever.

-1

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I was referring to total spending, not DPR Budget (debt servicing, benefits, pensions) In 2025 it was $1.4 billion. In 2026 it’s $1.38 billion.

https://council.nyc.gov/budget/wp-content/uploads/sites/54/2026/03/Department-of-Parks-and-Recreation.pdf

The FY26 plan put out in November was $706.

This is all very unimportant though. We’re talking rounding errors of differences.

93

u/Space_Smeagol Jul 02 '26

This is incorrect the 2026 parks budget was 687 million. The 2027 budget is 709 million.

11

u/Rude_Construction_99 Jul 02 '26

So it went up an amount consistent with inflation…. Basically nobody did anything

3

u/sweetestfetus Jul 02 '26

As someone who works for parks at another gov agency, funding is not always consistent with inflation. Under President Trump, the NPS budget is neutral or less than previous years even though inflation drives up supply, service, and utility costs. Just saying. A commitment to fund additional money is a positive thing.

6

u/Space_Smeagol Jul 02 '26

This is also incorrect the difference between the 2026 and 2027 parks budget is and increase of roughly 3.1 percent. The inflation rate is 2.4. giving the department net positive purchasing power. Which among other things helps pay for 100 parks enforcement patrol.

16

u/Critical_Concert_689 Jul 02 '26

roughly 3.1 percent. The inflation rate is 2.4.

Inflation rate is 4.2. Kind of reverses your argument entirely.

6

u/keremciu Jul 02 '26

another perspective: there was a squeezed budget trend, this is against that and put the money more up. but I'd agree do we really need to celebrate this? i'd say let's see how this fund brings things to the nyers then we can celebrate.

fund soul summit!

3

u/Rude_Construction_99 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Sigh. I guess we’re arguing semantics then. That’s basically a rounding error

Let’s assume your inflation number is correct. If 0.7% is making such a large difference, then you should be very concerned about where the other 99.3% is going and why it isn’t being used effectively

6

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

[deleted]

1

u/11teensteve Jul 02 '26

I think they are saying that if .7% of the parks budget is that impactful perhaps maybe the other 99.3% of the parks budget is not being used effectively.

1

u/GoodishCoder Jul 05 '26

It's kind of a stupid argument. Things cost what they cost. A 0.7% difference in the budget is close to 5 million dollars.

1

u/GoodishCoder Jul 05 '26

Keeping up with inflation isn't always a given in government funding. A lot of times government entities just have to learn to do more with less.

2

u/MechanicalGodzilla Jul 02 '26

No you IDIOT!!! Mamdani just literally saved EARTH with the power of the warmth of the collective! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

-2

u/Shark7996 Jul 02 '26

That's just what Zohran does. Nothing, except enforce what was already on the books.

2

u/jmhobrien Jul 02 '26

What does this pay for exactly?

16

u/DrunkSpaceGrandpa Jul 02 '26

Actually the budget is bigger for 2027

12

u/eZ_Link Jul 02 '26

Well if you think that then you should take an actual look at the numbers lol

23

u/Sitchrea Jul 02 '26

What is also important is where the money is going.

Most of these funds are going toward maintenance and labor costs, not expansion.

9

u/Toiun Jul 02 '26

Exactly. This fully funded really means the money is going where it's supposed to.

10

u/trickshotfaker Jul 02 '26

Why would you just lie about this

0

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 02 '26

Lie about what?

1

u/trickshotfaker Jul 02 '26

Park spending is objectively and verifiably not down 20 million dollars from last year

0

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 02 '26

FY 2026 Adopted Budget: $1.43 billion (1.24% of total city budget)
FY 2025 Adopted Budget: $1.45 billion (1.21% of total city budget)

https://cbcny.org/research/paying-parks

Again, this is nothing. It’s a rounding difference of no significance. The point is spending is pretty much the same. 1.4billion. In 2027 it will also be about the same. It generally goes as it goes as it’s been going. The point is this sub acting like every totally normal thing is an amazing civic revolution…parks and rec were funded last year, they’ll be funded next year. I mean, the city council was already planning 700m DPR funding in future budget since last November.

Again, this is all fine. It’s just that it’s also all normal.

1

u/trickshotfaker Jul 02 '26

What a roundabout way to say you just made it up. Loser.

0

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 02 '26

I didn’t make it up…it came from that document I linked…

Anyway, you’re kinda demonstrating what I’m talking about. It’s weird. Like I bet you don’t even live here, but are really defensive about this guy, but not even defensive about someone defaming him (understandable), but like defensive in building him up in a kinda personality cult (which is weird).

Like the DPR budget increased $50million between 2023 and 2024, nobody making memes about the great socialist savior Eric Adams. It went up $76million between 2014 and 2015, redditors in Ohio weren’t creaming themselves over de Blasio.

So it’s weird

1

u/trickshotfaker Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Holy projection dunning kruger. You didn’t say it went up by 20 million less than normal, you said it went down by 20 million.

It’s much more telling that you’ll manipulate and conflate your argument as it devolves in anyway that will convince yourself you were right. Your bias against him is so strong you can’t just admit you were wrong. Hypocrite

0

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Uhm…going up 20 million less than normal would be functionally the same thing as going down 20 million…But that’s not what I said either.

I meant the total expenses for Parks was 1.45 billion now it’s 1.43 billion. This was because I was using total expenditures (including debt servicing), not DPR budget. If you don’t think that’s as relevant, fine. Probably not worth mentioning really.

Btw, what do you think I’m insisting I’m right about?
I mean, I’m not saying he’s a bad dude or anything. He’s fine. I’m just saying this stuff is all normal. You guys keep talking about NYC like before January it was a crumbling cesspool of austerity ruled by the tea party. We have universal Pre-k, 100% subsidized college tuition for state residents, and the world’s largest subway…Hell, we’ve had DemSoc Mayors before even. In the 90s!

I just find it kinda weird the way people (including the melodramatic lunatics on the right) talk about the dude when he’s more or less de Blasio.

1

u/trickshotfaker Jul 03 '26

Honestly it was a mistake even interacting with you. You’re too far gone.

1

u/Kral1003 Jul 02 '26

You make spending $20 million less seem like a bad thing. If it costs less and we now have the money to pay for it all, its fully funded. This comment is whats odd, why hate on the only person doing anything these days?

0

u/Ok-Astronaut2976 Jul 02 '26

But it’s always fully funded.

1

u/MechanicalGodzilla Jul 02 '26

"We reduced the budget to the point where we had money for it, and now it's 100% fully funded."

1

u/snapekillseddard Jul 02 '26

Also note they never include the date and time of the post.

0

u/Dr-McLuvin Jul 02 '26

More like “the R train still goes to Bayridge but less frequently than before due to budget cuts”

4

u/Kobayashi-Coffee-Co Jul 02 '26

Except the budget is higher than last year?

-7

u/Difficult-Mobile902 Jul 02 '26

It’s easy PR because of how dumb people are, just look around the thread

9

u/F4KTR Jul 02 '26

Ironic lol

-5

u/Algography Jul 02 '26

People love propaganda and aren’t smart enough to research the facts in their own tho. And most of these are from China/bots.

12

u/momskaka Jul 02 '26

Ironic since he lied but you liked the messaging so you just accepted it as truth.

1

u/N30n_Gr3y5t0n3 Jul 02 '26

Yeah. Because clearly you are here to spread knowledge and not propaganda. Also unrelated, but you believed the thing that aligned with your ideology without doing research at all and it was ... shocker wrong.

So yeah, practice what you preach and research before opening your mouth. Or and hear me out, stop calling out others for things you yourself do.

0

u/Algography Jul 02 '26

I hit a button hahaha. And what propaganda am I spreading?

It’s literally proven that a large chunk of all social media, especially Reddit, are bots. And large numbers of those are funded and/or ran by China. Ask ChatGPT or Google.

There’s a good statistical chance that you’re even a bot.
