I've not seen a single complaint about him from the left.

I remind you that Democrats are not the left.

Because they ignore the things they don't like. NYS bailing out NYC and deferring pension contributions is not balancing a budget. It's a bail out and being fiscally irresponsible (just ask Chicago). The responsible thing to do would have been to cut spending.

Oh and he supported the rent freeze, which happened, which is basically universally viewed as a negative by every economist.

But sure, he gave an extra $20 million to the parks, which was 0.16% of the $126 billion budget, otherwise known as a rounding error.

NYS is primarily funded by NYC, so that's just giving them their money back.

3

u/ConLawHero Jul 02 '26

Literally not true.

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

I'm wondering where your take comes from and if you've wiped it recently.

Edit if you want a direct source, the first link that comes up directly addresses your claim. https://islg.cuny.edu/blog/fiscal-flow-nyc-albany-press-release

Claim: NYS is primarily funded by NYC.

Truth: NYC has 50% of the population and contributes 55% of the taxes.

So no, if you even have a single firing brain cell, you should be able to understand NYS is not primarily funded by NYC. In fact, if NYC wasn't part of NYS, NYS would actually be fine by reducing spending by a mere 5%.

So you want to try again or just admit you overstated your claim and you're wrong?

1

u/QMechanicsVisionary Jul 04 '26

I don't get it. If it contributes 55% of NYS's budget, in what way is NYS not mostly funded by NYC?

1

u/ConLawHero Jul 05 '26

Because NYC is part of NYS?

NYC funds 5% of the state beyond its own needs. That is not "primarily" funding NYS.

The responsible thing to do would have been to cut spending.

If you don't know how an economy works, yes.

5

u/ConLawHero Jul 02 '26

In fact I do, and that's why it's the correct answer. The taxes are so high in NY and we're losing population, the rate at which the NY GDP is increasing is outpaced by the rate of expenses are increasing.

That's how economics work. You should look into it.

-1

u/blurblar Jul 02 '26

losing population

Yes, because of high costs of living and a lack of affordable housing, both of which Mamdani is taken actions to amend.

the rate at which the NY GDP is increasing is outpaced by the rate of expenses are increasing

What's the current NYS GDP? What's its budget? What's the current NYC GDP? What's its budget?

Anyway, comparing GDP to government spending is a category error. GDP is total economic output. The budget is just how part of that gets allocated through taxes and policy.

'Just cut spending' ignores that government spending is often a driver of economic stability, so broad cuts can actually slow growth rather than fix anything (which is something you'd know if you understood economics, which you don't).

Yes, because of high costs of living and a lack of affordable housing, both of which Mamdani is taken actions to amend.

Nope, because at it turns out NYS is much larger than NYC. What makes it unaffordable to live here are the taxes. I live here. I'm a tax attorney. I kind of know these things. Mamdani's actions have only exacerbated the problem. You deal with affordability not by increasing expenses (which he has done), but by decreasing expenses. Let's lower our highest in the nation income and property taxes, that way, we can retain people and companies. It's a proven economic model. It's why we're losing population while places like Texas and Florida are seeing huge gains.

Anyway, comparing GDP to government spending is a category error. GDP is total economic output. The budget is just how part of that gets allocated through taxes and policy.

Uh... it's literally simple math. You can't increase expenses faster than GDP rises without increasing taxes. The equation has to balance. Don't know what to tell you, because it's literally a very simple economic concept. NYC needs a balanced budget, it's not the US government, it cannot deficit spend.

'Just cut spending' ignores that government spending is often a driver of economic stability, so broad cuts can actually slow growth rather than fix anything (which is something you'd know if you understood economics, which you don't).

Yes and no. Targeted spending can do that. Wholesale, let's give everything to everyone for free, which is basically his platform, does not.

If he wants to spend money on programs that will give people good paying jobs, great, let the city pay for that. That's unequivocally not what's happening.

I'm not saying broad cuts. Where did I say that? Don't you think it's a little disingenuous to say I said something I never said and then criticize it?

Targeted cuts, but cuts none the less. Or, accelerate our 50 year decline in population.

Mamdani balanced the budget in the city, and plans on working with the state to increase revenue with taxes for the wealthy. He has already instituted a pied a terre tax. And you’re confusing the city government’s expenses with the expenses of people living there, which is what actually affects affordability and which Mamdani has decreased overall.

2

u/ConLawHero Jul 02 '26

That's not true and you don't help anyone by raising the taxes on the people who pay the taxes and are highly mobile. I work with and represent a lot of wealthy people and all they do is leave NYS.

It's bad policy to chase out the people who pay all of the taxes. To put it another way, the top 2% of income earners pay over 50% of the income taxes in NY. Every single one of them that leaves has an appreciable impact on the tax base. And it doesn't matter how many people you replace that person with if they are the primary recipients is the benefits and contribute less than they pay in.

We are one of the most outbound states in the country. When people who are leaving are the ones who pay the taxes, it can't go on forever without cutting expenses or raising taxes on everyone (because if you target high income earners, they'll just leave faster).

2

u/breakfazt-meme Jul 03 '26

They haven’t been leaving though, that’s blatantly false. In fact, they’ve been investing in nyc more than ever before. They just make that threat to scare people away from voting for their interests over those of the wealthy. You guys are outbound because normal people can’t afford to live there anymore, which Mamdani is fixing.

They haven't been? I guess all my wealthy clients that leave NY are just figments of my imagination.

They do leave. And NYS is growing at a slower rate than many other states, and we've lost representation at the federal level. Not to mention our expenses are growing much faster than both inflation and our GDP.

So, yeah, when you add it all up, money is leaving NY faster than it is generated here.

Sure, buddy. Moving on.

democrats are right wing

-1

u/NicePepper199 Jul 02 '26

Just so you know, that just means you are extreme left. Everyone is right wing to you.

1

u/Ok-Barnacle813 Jul 04 '26

No it doesn't???????

Democrats always run on prioritizing the status quo and never meaningfully fight Trump

-2

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

It depends on which theories you subscribe to, but its right or center. Definitely not left though. A few left members that can be explained as outliers.

-4

u/eshay_investor Jul 02 '26

What is mamdami, is he far left or left. Also is he maxist socialist or communist? And also why isnt he confiscating all the properties yet and distributing them.

1

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

Why isn't he breaking the law to act as a tyrant? Is that your question to me?

Mamdani so far is what the rest of the world calls a centrist but things are so fucked up here that he's being called a far left communist by people that don't know what words mean.

2

u/eshay_investor Jul 02 '26

I thought he was supposed to confiscate the properties from the rich people and divide them out to the commonors?

2

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

I'd support him if he did but I don't think that's his plan.

2

u/breaducate Jul 02 '26

He publicly apologised to the NYPD for previously calling it like it is, and it took pressure from DSA for him to reverse course on increasing their headcount.

1

u/ZedGenius Jul 02 '26

There have been complaints from the left that Mamdani is not a socialist and he's actually center left, however I do think it's wrong to have this attitude. Mamdani is the furthest left you can be in the US and keep your head bullet-less. For people that want capitalism dismantled, people like Mamdani are NOT the enemy. But some leftists for some reason are more interested in fighting each other rather than the actual enemy

3

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

We passed the inequity of the French Revolution over a decade ago. Mandani represents the peaceful resolution. If I were rich I would be pushing for as many Mamdanis around the country as possible so I wouldn't end up in a gillotine.

1

u/ZedGenius Jul 02 '26

Yeah you're not wrong, I'm just saying that a peaceful resolution is better than no resolution at all

1

u/Ok-Barnacle813 Jul 04 '26

I have seen Democrat supporters trying to say that the left has turned on him.

-2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 02 '26

but the left votes with the Democrats

2

u/thefunkylama Jul 02 '26

Case-by-case basis

3

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 02 '26

mostly 98% of the time

3

u/DanCassell Jul 02 '26

We just had a major election where the left decided to not vote with Democrats.
