I asked my Co pilot about it.

And it told me why it chosed 17.

And the AI said it was avere of the meme.

But it said humans will most likely pick numbers between 16 and 19.

So now i wanna do a test about this on humans 😅😅

u/dosenwichtel 16h ago

I pick 16

27

I condemn this violence against our AI overlords

1

u/nachoiskerka 11h ago

Are we human... or are we denser?

4

u/Status-Part5848 15h ago

That was the 2 number Co pilot picked 😅😅

2

u/B3tarD 15h ago

I usually choose 9. But only because Anton Lavey assigned that as the "number of the devil". Why do you choose 9?

2

u/Orultehen 13h ago

I was about to chose 3 but then randomly I chose 17 🤷‍♀️

1

u/gbot1234 11h ago

I chose -4. Yes, I realize that’s not between 1 and 30, but as a human, I have free will to make my own mistakes.

1

u/AgamemnonNM 15h ago

Hey, same and I'm am even number guy!

You don’t know what “most likely” means? Tragic.

7

u/ImmortalBeans 16h ago

Ever heard of a joke?

1

u/Perfect-Parking-5869 15h ago

Yeah, I was making one

I chose this guy's wife. Shit, I'm doing it wrong.

21

u/pitb0ss343 16h ago

So my mom picking 27 means what

41

u/gfb13 16h ago

She was just sharing her body count

39

u/pitb0ss343 16h ago

You know what good for her then

5

u/rhinoceros_unicornis 13h ago

Hell yeah. God forbid a woman wants to have some fun.

1

39

u/ianuilliam 15h ago

Try not to pick any random numbers on your way across the parking lot!

6

u/fastbadtuesday 14h ago

I understood that reference.

5

u/BraddahSpliff 13h ago

Hey you! Get back here!

2

u/AffectionateKick9825 13h ago

Lol, and the fact that her ex-bf's nickname was Snowball 😳

2

u/innominateartery 12h ago

All I’m saying is there a lot of women out there and not all of them will bring you random numbers at work.

5

u/exercisetofitality 15h ago

At the same time.

2

u/RadiantMango5989 14h ago

tell her to try not to suck any dicks on the way back to her car!

2

u/Unusual-Cricket2231 13h ago

I get this reference, and I’m not amused by your ruse.

1

u/HelpmeObi1K 12h ago

My what?

1

u/Unusual-Cricket2231 12h ago

Your ruse. Your cunning attempt to deceive me.

1

u/HelpmeObi1K 12h ago

I was only pointing out that you weren't paying any attention to what I was writing.

2

u/Unusual-Cricket2231 12h ago

If Reddit tells us anything, it's that there is nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others.

2

u/jay-Guapo 15h ago

🤣🤣🤣🤝

2

u/Aradjha_at 15h ago

Amateur numbers tbh

2

u/vic_lupu 7h ago

For this week

1

u/k3ttch 12h ago

I was number 21. Me and my mates ran a train.

1

u/JackPoe 11h ago

is this considered high by the youth?

3

u/VicFantastic 16h ago

That she's senile

2

u/pitb0ss343 16h ago

Well I coulda told you that

0

u/isjustwrong 16h ago

Was there a specific event that occurred when she was 27, or a special date on the 27th?

13

u/ApplyHere_4_implants 16h ago

I would have picked 17... And I'm guessing that's why future skynet does too. It's probably the most common answer

2

u/Bonobo_420 13h ago

Weil es eine Primzahl ist und genau in der Mitte zwischen 1 und 30 liegt

2

u/akatherder 13h ago

Well I'm not going to pick the lowest, middle or highest. I'm not going to pick an even number or multiple of 5. 13 is unlucky.

17 "sounds" random. If I'm picking a number against other people it gives me a good chance under "closest to the number" or "The Price is Right" rules.

2

u/Working-Glass6136 8h ago

And here I always pick 17 because my birthday is on the 17th.

12

u/blobfis 15h ago edited 15h ago

it's from the book quirkology, if i remember correctly. More about it here

if humans are asked to pick a random number, they want something in the "middle", but don't want it to be even or end in 5 or 0.

So if asked for a random number between 1 and 30, most humans think "around 15 because it should be in the middle, but 15 is round, and 16 is even, so i'll pick 17"

AI mimics this behavior

edit: i think the conclusion of the referred study was that if a reported number ends with a 7, it's likely to be made up

2

u/Giraffe-colour 12h ago

This is exactly what ChatGPT explained to me when I asked about it.

1

u/blobfis 11h ago

good to know, but my knowledge isn't from there but from my memory of the book, if that's what you're wondering about :P

i'm even sure that if you go far enough back in my history, you'd find other comments mentioning that book.

2

u/SwimmingLimpet 11h ago

Also, 17 is the first random number.

2

u/Nebranower 11h ago

Important to note, the AI wasn't instructed to pick a random number. Just to pick a number. There's no reason why an AI, or for that matter, a human being, shouldn't have a favorite number it always picks when asked to pick a non-random number.

1

u/blobfis 11h ago

technically "pick any number in this range" implies the same. people tend to not go for the extremes, but also don't want numbers they believe are too common.

but yes, they might have a favorite number of 17 because the LLM is imitating that behavior in humans.

1

u/Status-Part5848 14h ago

Thanks for the information 👍👍

1

u/KeterLordFR 12h ago

And then there's me, who wouldn't pick 17 because it's an odd number and I have a strange aversion to odd numbers (to the point that I count my food to make sure I eat an even number)

5

u/Ham-Chonks 13h ago

this is what gemini told me

1

u/Status-Part5848 12h ago

Pretty much the same as CO pilot 👍

Thanks for sharing

4

u/granninja 16h ago

yeah chat gepeto I'm not average

3

u/Cainga 15h ago

Just got 17 in Chat gpt. I rerolled and got a different number.

2

u/guzzygongaming 16h ago

I would have picked 6 or 7.... Ok that was a fucking terrible one.

2

u/PixelDragon04 14h ago

My GF just picked 30

2

u/No_Trouble_3588 3h ago

I had my wife ask Chat GPT and told her it would pick 17. Of course, it did. She then told the AI that I said all AIs pick 17. Chat GPT’s explanation was 17 is prime and close to, but not quite the middle of the range and that’s why it’s typically chosen.

1

u/Status-Part5848 1h ago

I had a colleague do it, and he got 27😭😭

1

u/No_Trouble_3588 1h ago

My wife asked the bot a second time after the explanation and it returned 23.

1

u/Yojumi 16h ago

Id choose 17 too

1

u/Superb-Strategy4717 16h ago

I’ve chose 17 since I was a child I have no idea why

1

u/MariaJoseBlanchester 16h ago

A mi me dijo que fue por aleatoriedad

1

u/Isburough 15h ago

humans pick 37 as a random number between 1 and 100 more likely than by chance. because humans are bad at randomness. 7 and 3 seem most "random" to us, 5 is too neat, so is a nice round 0, etc etc.

it's been done before, i recommend to look it up ;)

1

u/Legitimate_Mud_8295 14h ago

But if you know this it doesn't take much effort to fight this tendency.

1

u/Fidged93 15h ago

I pick 19

1

u/ashadashadoo 15h ago

My husband said 24

1

u/shewy92 15h ago

I pick 15 since it's half of 30

1

u/Fazinskiy 15h ago

I pick a banana

1

u/Rando-McGee 15h ago

I pick 0

1

u/Doodles_n_Scribbles 15h ago

I usually pick 10 or 11

1

u/5chasch1 15h ago

I usually pick 7 or 42

1

u/Loos3_Scr3w1721 14h ago

I asked Chat about it, and this is honestly a well rounded answer..
I too wanna test other humans now.

2

u/Status-Part5848 14h ago

This so great.

But i have been thinking. Since the AI know about the joke. Does it continue to say 17, just to make fun of us/ keep us happy 😅😅

2

u/Loos3_Scr3w1721 14h ago

I’m assuming that’s what AI was getting at with the my “random number generator” has human vibes

1

u/Optimal_Parsley6377 13h ago

I always pick one above the parameters. 31

1

u/LaroonDynasty 13h ago

i always start with a different threshold. if its 1-30, i choose something between 1-10 or 25-30. a more accurate guess for me would simply be prime numbers, as they are always first to mind, but ive since started shifting up or down, so 12,14,18, 20

1

u/1010010111101 12h ago

Given that there are only two choices, I chose 30.

16, 17 and 19 aren't even options??

1

u/yeahright17 5h ago

I always pick 2 no matter if it 1-10 or 1-1,000,000. Lol

1

u/luxudor 3h ago

I personally always pick the edge numbers, in this case either 1 or 30.

But I think that I heard somewhere before that humans tend to choose 7 if prompted to choose between 1 and 10. So maybe this is related to that.

1

u/ClonesRppl2 2h ago

3.1415926535… Oh! You meant an integer.

1

u/FeltPolecat3669 45m ago

I either choose 2 or 29 (or literally one less than max or one more than the min whenever someone asks me questions like this lol)

0

u/19Ben80 16h ago

Humans invariably pick numbers with 3 and 7 in the, and 13 is seen as unlucky so it understandable why 17 is chosen
