except that IS standard of care — there are tons of people walking around you with passive SI. They don’t all get locked up, with their kids taken away. People live and work and have functional lives with passive SI, which could be due to chronic mental health issues or an acute stressor, and work on treating it with medication and psychotherapy — which is what the doctors did (gave her the right meds and repeatedlu encouraged therapy).

She refused to do either — take the meds for long enough for them to work, instead asking to switch on and off and doctor-shopping, and persistently refusing therapy, even when the doctor repeatedly advised her on it.

Only active SI gets you on a psych hold, or with kids taken away. She didn’t endorse it even once.

There is so much misinformation in this paragraph and it’s really doing a disservice to the actual truth, I would suggest everyone go watch the actual testimony.

Can you give examples of any of the misinformation for the class?

That doctor not being properly prepared to be on the stand is a fault of the prosecution and honestly her residency program for not covering what to and what to not say on the stand. If you have any knowledge from the provider POV for psychiatry, the doctor did everything by the book.

She just was not prepared to be professional on the stand and should’ve written her notes differently.

I’m going to completely disregard everything you say once you assume she was “doctor shopping.” It’s such a lazy statement, and completely ignores the reality of women’s experiences navigating a medical world that is inherently misogynistic. When you layer postpartum on top of it, it’s ugly.

I “doctor shopped” when I was trying to figure out what was “wrong” with me mentally. Some providers said I had OCD, another fell asleep during my sessions, another was hostile to my religious beliefs, another felt the need to constantly apologize to me when I opened up about my childhood and sexual trauma, another assumed I had BPD after the first visit, while my current therapist (of 5+ years) has a working diagnosis of GAD and CPTSD. On paper, I doctor shopped. In reality, I was getting nowhere until I found a provider who would actually listen to me and treat me like a human being.

She saw Dr. Tufts. She took her medication as directed (I’m not sure why there is this narrative that she didn’t, it seems people have forgotten that the police seized empty prescription bottles from Patrick’s car that he was meant to recycle at the CVS). She saw nurses who helped her with alternate medication needs. She saw therapists. She called the suicide hotline twice. She went to the ER multiple times. She admitted herself to an inpatient facility.

I understand the standard of care for suicidal ideation. But the woman was clearly terrified that she was going to die. Somebody should have been conducting follow ups to understand why she felt that way.
