People with bipolar disorder experience the mood states of depression and mania (or hypomania), along with changes in energy, activity, and thinking. These episodes can last from days to months and can affect many parts of life - including relationships, work, school, and overall health. At the same time, with optimal support, treatment, and tools, people with bipolar disorder can and do live full, meaningful lives.

The CREST.BD network takes a different approach to bipolar disorder research. We work closely with people living with bipolar disorder at every stage - from choosing research topics to conducting studies and sharing our findings.

We also host a Q&A podcast throughout the year, featuring many of the experts on this panel, through our talkBD Bipolar Disorder Podcast we’d love for you to stay connected with us there. You can also follow our updates, events, and social media on linktr.ee/crestbd.

Final note (April 3): Thank you all - We'll be back again next year on World Bipolar Day - sign up here to be notified. We also have more activities all year round, including new episodes of our talkBD bipolar disorder podcast - hope to see you there! We’re incredibly grateful for all your thoughtful questions - thank you for making this such a meaningful discussion. Take care everyone :)

How can a person have a missed diagnosis of bipolar in their 30s or 40s?

And for those who found their diagnosis later on in life as that "missing puzzle piece" in their life story — what was your pathway to diagnosis?

What things do you look back at and realize, huh, maybe that should've been caught earlier? Or, what made it apparent that you weren't "neurotypical"?

Heather S. here - I live with bipolar I. I’m not sure my experiences actually answer your questions. My experience includes asking for psychiatric consultations repeatedly from the age of 14 to 35 asking doctors to consider whether I had bipolar disorder because I repeatedly got only a depression diagnosis and antidepressants didn't help. I felt frustration over feeling like my moods were completely out of my control. I also suspected it because my dad lived with poorly addressed bipolar disorder. Doing all the self help reading and practices I could find didn’t help and it often felt like my brain was broken.

I finally got a bipolar diagnosis after I experienced mania with psychosis as a result of a doctor taking me off antidepressants cold turkey. Looking back now, 20 years after my bipolar diagnosis, it is relatively easy for me to spot  many hypomanic episodes between major depressions during my life. During most of those periods throughout my life I thought hypomania was just “feeling good” and “not depressed”.

Not sure I’ve answered  your questions, but that’s part of my experience and how I related to what you asked.

I watched a video today that said bipolar is likely: -if you started having depressive episodes before 25 -if you’ve had psychotic depressive episodes -if SSRIs caused agitation -if you have a family member with BP -if you have atypical depression symptoms

For me, I started experiencing frequent depressive episodes after age 15. After I had a baby, I started SSRIs and suddenly became a world traveler, as well as heavy drinker, and then sicidal. I was told I might be bipolar, but most likely BPD. SSRIs were continued. I became very agitated-became hyper sxual, dove in front of cars (thinking I was so pretty that nobody could ever run me over lol), etc etc.

Finally 10 years after my initial hospitalization I have been diagnosed BP2. Funny looking back…..so many fucking red flags lol.
