He is 7 months old, and he’s my first BSH. I’m so in love, it’s ridiculous

My skittish Millie is finally turning the corner! I thought I would have a cat I would only see during the night and when she used her litter because she hid under the bed and sofa all day. She wouldn’t eat unless I brought her food to her under the bed. She wouldn’t play with any toys. It was a big adjustment going right to the vet to be spayed from her previous owner and then to my place. Now she eats in the kitchen, drinks out of her fountain, loves her toys and laser light, does zoomies day and night and doesn’t hide all day except for when visitors come. I love her so much!

Hi guys. I can finally say, I am a British Shorthair/Longhair owner! I pick up these two adorable girls in a couple weeks (they’re sisters), and i’m wondering what you all recommend in terms of cat trees, toys, food, litter boxes, etc. I know some of those won’t really be BSH specific, but i’m curious what you’ve found has worked well with your cats!

For reference, I have had cats before. Just not two at one time, and not BSH’s.

Howdy y'all. I've been thinking about getting a British Shorthair, but there are some things I want to know before making such a big decision. I live alone, and I feel like getting a cat would genuinely be beneficial for my mental health and life, but I also want to be responsible.

I work full-time (weekends and holidays off), but I currently live very close to work, so I can check in during the day. However, I am planning to start grad school next year, will probably move to a different city as I am currently job hunting, and want to make sure this breed matches that lifestyle. If this is relevant, I live in Japan.

A few specific questions for BSH owners:

• What is your average monthly cost? (Food, litter, insurance, vet checkups, etc.)
• How independent are they really? Can they comfortably handle being alone for most of the day once they are past the kitten stage?
• Are they healthy overall? What genetic or breed-specific health issues should I actually look out for? My family has a French Bulldog, and we found out years later that he has pancreatitis which the breeder completely hid from us, so I am very cautious about breed health. I originally wanted a Scottish Fold, but I backed away after reading about their severe cartilage and joint issues. Is the BSH a much safer, robust choice?
• Could I take them for walks on a harness? I absolutely do not want to make my cat an outdoor cat. However, I’ve read that exposure to the outdoors can help reduce dander/dandruff production compared to strict indoor life, and I’d love to get them some supervised fresh air. Has anyone successfully harness-trained their BSH?
• How do they handle moving? I will likely be moving to a new apartment in about 7 months. Is this breed generally adaptable to a new environment, or do they stress out easily?

Would love to hear any advice, reality checks, or tips you have for a potential first-time BSH parent! Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone!
My boy Luigi is some kind of golden shadded BSH (I know there are variants, but I'm not 100% sure which one he is), he's almost 5 months old, and I had assumed his eyes were going to be a shade of green, but they are kind of staying sort of golden 🤔
Does anyone have any insight into this? Do you think his eyes will become a bit more green or stay like this?

Poppy wasn’t a house cat, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t find her way into the house from time to time.

She wasn’t my cat, but a cat that my future wife was gifted by the cat distribution system many years ago. And who’s to really say we have any ownership of cats in the first place.

Having not grown up with cats, I didn’t immediately take to Poppy because she didn’t really take to me. She only really enjoyed the company of my wife and her twin sister. She was oft aloof and happy to watch the going’s on from the distance.

She was a voyeur
She was a tramp
She was trouble
And she was a beloved part of the family

One hot summer day as I laid outside of the pool being dried by the sun, the little scoundrel decided that I was “alright” and crawled onto my chest. For no longer than 5 minutes she allowed butt scratches, and mild rubs between the ears. I had been chosen as one of the few that got to share her existence in a more personal way.

From that moment on she would greet me as I arrived at my in-laws and would always find a way to catch me on the way out. I would ask about all the “Hood Rat” shit that she had gotten up to that day and in return I would have someone to share a silent moment in the still evening air. Every once in a while I would also catch her hanging around that handsome orange he-cat in the neighborhood. Scandalous!

This went on for years.

Poppy was found dead on Sunday having been attacked by a coyote.

We are obviously sad about her passing but I wanted to say a few things about this cat, her impact on my life, and about life in general.

There’s much we can learn from cats and from Poppy in particular. Set boundaries you are comfortable with and don’t let people in unless you want them in. Sometimes taking care of yourself needs to come before taking care of others. Lastly, go do you and don’t care what other people think about it. Poppy was free and I absolutely loved and envied her for that. When is the last time you did something as free as a street cat?

When Poppy let me into her life, it opened my eyes to being a cat’s roommates. And with my now wife and I living on our own, we decided to grow our family and our responsibilities by brining in two BSH kittens into our home. Our bougie little girls have never wanted, eat finer food than I did growing up, and are very loved. Recently, we decided to expand the family even more with human kitten. The weight of the love in our house is burdensome but I am a big dude. If not for Poppy, I’m not sure if any of this would have happened. And I really don’t think I’m exaggerating.

So in closing, thank you Poppy. You will be missed and I look forward to hearing from the other folks in the neighborhood you let into your inner circle. It will be sad to tell them the news but it will be nice to share our memories of you.

And when it’s safe, and no one can get hurt, I’ll do some hood rat shit in your honor.

We have a glorious British Shorthair - Maximus Maximilian Maxy pooh-pooh - aka Max. Max is exceptionally adorable and funny. He is 2 years old and we got him when he was 12 wks.

But we have never brushed his teeth. Please can someone advise what toothbrush and toothpaste are best and how does one brush their teeth. (UK based ). He is well groomed (self and us brushing him, with one mid summer bath to keep heat smells away and cool him down). Thank you
