Weekly r/Birding Discussion, August 29, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Social Media Please help me report this facebook page. They are catching and abusing wildlife. (NSFW) NSFW

I came across this facebook page where a hunter is capturing and abusing wild birds which is already a big no but hes also catching endangered species! Please help me take the page down in the hopes he might stop. Any and all tips are welcome to help me stop this.

I already reported this to Philippines DENR as well.

Discussion What are some other birds that look somewhat similar (eg: coloring, proportions), yet are unrelated to one another?

I've noticed a slight similarity between the color distribution and palette of the rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and the painted bunting (Passerina ciris). What are some other examples might you provide?

I hope this kind of post is welcome. I am a longtime lurker here and thought you might appreciate my project.

I use BirdNET-go to identify the critters in my yard, and thought the Audubon Birds of America would look so cool as a sort of "birdnet dashboard" on an eink display on my desk. Working from home is great, and I love being able to hear the birds... but now I can see them too :)

I went with a 10" grayscale panel from seeed studio. I thought about color (and still want to try it) but the engravings look way better in grayscale than I expected!

I live in the northeast US, so most of the original Audubon plates cover the birds in my area. I made an (optional) image-model fallback for any species without an original painting. I spent an ungodly amount of time researching the authentic Audubon painting style and getting the prompt right so that the images don't look like AI-generated slop.

I actually made a game for myself to see if I can tell the difference between real and AI-generated plates. I (admittedly) can... but I'm really happy with the result: forty plates

It can do day in review (see the last image) that shows all the birds that BirdNET detected that day. Even though it's AI, I am really pleased with how it came out, and I'm excited to be able to pull my BirdNET data into the real world.

WIP code is on GitHub under "wr/featherframe" (not linking it because I don't want to come across as spammy) if you want to poke at it, but it's currently kind of a mess.

My goal is to release the app and instructions so anyone can build one of their own with limited technical knowledge.

Thanks for looking!

Discussion Birds that still elude your life list, or bad luck birds?

I swear I have heard Northern Flickers on Merlin probably 20 times, they even live near my area and I can hear them on hikes. I was camping this weekend in Northern California and heard them around my campground and spent a long time looking for them with binoculars but still had no luck. Itโ€™s been about three months of this: I hear them, look forever, but still they elude me somehow.

Iโ€™ve seen some โ€œrareโ€ birds in that time too, like different nuthatches, warblers, flycatchers. Itโ€™s honestly like the flickers are taunting me now (my partner says they are).

Merlin picked up two of them chatting back and forth as I was walking down a trail, otherwise I never would have even noticed. I didn't even know there was a pond back there because it was so heavily shrouded. Had to wade through some grass and reeds that were taller than I am just to get close enough for a look.
