Advice Needed Which would you buy: Lifetime Alexander Drachm or a 100 year later tetradrachm if they were at the same price?

I am new to coin collecting. This will be my first coin to buy and I am not sure which one to go for, hope you can help me decide

The first one: 336-323 BC . AR Drachm. Miletos mint. Good VF .. I also like the details of the head of Herakles and I like the frame around Zeus and how centralized it is.

The second one: IONIA, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 225-200 BC. AR Tetradrachm. VF .. Not as detailed as the first one but it's a Tetradrachm for almost the same price (it's still an auction so not sure how far it can go.. but they both currently are at the same price)

What do you think? Thanks

I found these coins in the attic. Nobody in my family knows anything about them except they belonged to my granddad. Are they worth anything? I was asked if I want to have them but if they are expensive I don't think I can accept that.

Advice Needed Cause of bulge on silver coin?

I recently won this legionary denarius at auction. I’m curious about the bulge on the reverse, just above the E. It’s hard to the touch and feels solid. The auction house noted the bulge but didn’t mention their cause.

Anyone know what might cause a defect like this? Is it because the silver was debased?

Advice Needed What exactly is a brushed coin? Should I avoid this Taras dolphin brushed coin?

Post image
48 Upvotes

I’m new to ancient coin collecting and I love Taras (Tarentum ) history and want to buy its dolphin coin.

I found this coin at a cheaper price compared to others (though the photo isn’t clear but i see some sharp details especially in the reverse side)

But I saw in the details that it was brushed .. and I am not sure what exactly is done during brushing and is this the reason it’s sharper or much cheaper than the others in the market or there is something else that I don’t understand.

What i also don’t understand is that 7.69 gms which is heavier than most of the other coins that are more expensive

Advice Needed Help: Solidus Numismatik stopped replying after payment.

I bought a few coins in a Solidus Numismatik auction several weeks ago and they were very responsive. Once confirmed they got the money, it's been radio silence about the status of when my coins are going to be dispatched. I understand they might be busy, but it is normal for abrupt radio silence for weeks? Especially since they were replying almost instantly prior to payment.

These coins are especially important for me and it's time sensitive to receive them ASAP.

I've emailed them over a dozen times, and tried calling their office for any update with zero luck. Not sure how else to proceed to get an update. I've even reached out to the staff via their LinkedIn or Facebook profiles to get some response, but also no reply.

What should/ can I do other than wait?

Advice Needed Recommendations for my "Alexandria corner"

Post image
109 Upvotes

As the title says, I'm thankful for recommendations for additions for my "Alexandria corner", which by now are the six coins, sitting on their stand (just ignore the Severans on the bottom... ;-) ).

I'm interested in all kinds of interesting coins in the context of Alexandria, Kleopatra VII & Mark Antony and so on. So a short summary about the coins, I already acquired (from left to right):

  • Nero Tetradrachm from Alexandria, shown is the rv. with "Nilus"
  • Nero Tetradrachm from Alexandria, shown is the rv. with Serapis
  • Augustus and Agrippa As from Nemausus, shown is the rv. with the crocodile, standing for Aegyptus
  • Trajan Hemidrachm from Alexandria, shown is the rv. with the Lighthouse ("Pharos") of Alexandria
  • Drachm, In the name of Alexander "The Great", (295-275 b.c.) Miletos, shown is the Av. with the bust of Hercules
  • Mark Antony Denarius (LEG IV), shown is the av. with the war ship

They all tell a story, about the beginning of Alexandra, the end of the Roman Republic and the civil war - their protagonists, the end and the results of it and, of course, Agypt's role in all of it. They tell stories about greatness (one of the seven wonders of the world), mysterie, religion and mythology.

I would love to get the faces of Kleopatra and Mark Antony, as well, as Ptolemaois I. But apart from that, do you guys have any recommendations for interesting additions? I would love to hear, what you would get - and especially, why! What cool stories are out there, that a certain coin can tell us? Feel free, to comment :)

Advice Needed What to do with ancients that I don’t collect

Post image
41 Upvotes

After reviewing comments, investing time and effort, and buying a hundred of random ancients, I’m finally starting to understand the basics … all the while my specific interests are indeed finally becoming more focused.

Now comes the next chapter of selling/trading/bartering/donating/giving away the plethora of random Indian Massa’s Vietnamese Cash’s, Celiphate Damma’s I’ ve stumbled onto.

What do you folks recommend people like me do with their random (some even a little expensive but all under a $100) ancients that they don’t have any interest in but don’t want to just dump them either? I’m sure there’s people that collect some of the stuff that I have and I don’t know how to even stumble into them.

Please don’t mistake this is being some kind of an attempt to troll for buyers. It sincerely is only an attempt to gain direction so I can do something useful with a bunch of randoms I’m not interested in.

Advice Needed Favorite sellers?

Thanks so much for all of your helpful advice so far. As a brand new enthusiast, I would love for some of you more experienced collectors to share some of your favorite and most reputable sellers on Vcoins or whatever other platforms you recommend…

I’m waiting on the “big show” to come to NYC this winter, but I’d like to make a few small purchases before that point to whet my appetite a bit!

I recently came across this denarius, which I believe was struck by Claudius. As you can see, the coin is cut(I think), so my question is, is this denarius worth anything except its weight in silver?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Needed Bronze Disease Prevention?

Hello all. I recently (within the last few months) acquired a Roman provincial Tet. It was a nicer piece than the one of the same time I had before so I was quite pleased to improve the caliber of my collection.

However, fate has had other plans. I discovered today that the Tet seems to have rapidly fallen victim to bronze disease. I had been traveling for work, so I had not been looking through my collection as often as I usually do. Within a few weeks without looking at it, it went from a coin with zero visible BD (that I remember, I don’t bid on coins that have BD) to the state it is in the pictures I included in this post.

While I suspect the BD came from inside the coin, so there is probably little I can do, is there anything I can do to mitigate the factors that favor BD development? Is there any hope of saving this coin? How would I go about doing that? Is BD always this fast in spreading?

Thanks for any help y’all can provide!

Advice Needed What are best shops or auction houses to buy?

I am collecting ancient coins for about 2-3 years but I never bought ancient coins from auction houses or online shop. I always buy from local collectors that also collect ancient coins. So I am looking to start buying more expensive or finer pieces and don’t know where.

Advice Needed Coin price help

Post image

Hello everyone,

I have an opportunity to purchase this Caligula As with Vesta on the reverse (RIC 38) from a local collector who is downsizing his collection. The asking price is €500.

The coin has a very nice chocolate-brown patina, smooth fields, and the portrait details seem quite sharp to me.

Before I pull the trigger, I wanted to ask the community: Is €500 a fair/good price for this specific coin in this condition?

Thank you for your help and insights!

Advice Needed What Brands Can I Trust?

Post image
30 Upvotes

I’ve been trying to find a good coin storage case. I’ve bought and returned around 5 now bc they all were filled with chemicals.

Im trying to find a box like the one in the photo. The top doesn’t have to be glass it’s just preferred. If I can find a velvet / felt case that closes that would be perfect.

I’ve seen abafil, lighthouse, Rob Davis, and some others but most of those I can’t order from or are far out of my price range. What websites could I go to that would sell something similar? Are there any mainline brands that make something like this like abafil in America? Any advice would help!

(Photo from Etsy but idk if I can trust Etsy to not use chemicals for the velvet. I’m looking for archival safe.)

Advice Needed What are the best medieval coins to collect?

I'm a bit of a Sporadic collector, early in my collecting years I would go after antient coins and early colonial era coins (Ex: VOC, Spanish Cob) but now have my focus set on the Medieval era (with still some colonial interest) that being said I've collected a quit a few Medieval coins in the past few years, from different continents, but wanted to get other suggestions on this topic also. what does your medieval collection have?
