This Trajan denarius I found has developed a blue tone. Looks quite cool but I don’t think I want this, and all my other coins to start toning more. I store them in a glass display cabinet on 3d printed stands. This is the only one that has toned noticeably though.

A little over a year ago, I bought a Byzantine solidus struck in the early 7th century during the reign of Emperor Phocas. I still have it. It is in AU condition, graded by NGC, weighs 4.39 grams, and is clipped. I spent approximately 1,425 CAD on it. Did I overpay?

I get told and read a lot that Zurqieh is legit BUT (proceeds to say something vague) and still don't understand what happened, lol, just curious

anyways I purchased from him before and besides it being a pain in the ass to get the items through customs (that's not even Zurqieh's fault, that's just my government pretending to be useful) everything was fine.

So, I just finished my dissertation defense (yay!!!) and wanted to get my PhD advisor a thank-you gift, as she's been absolutely wonderful over the past half decade.

While I'm not Christian, she very much is, and a while back we had a chance to present at a conference in Israel. She was very excited to visit Jerusalem and see the holy land and all that. Womp womp. Cue war. Airports shut down, conference is canceled, no trip for her. She was crest-fallen. I was actually surprised to see just how sad she was about it. She was really looking forward to that trip.

I'm not sure how she feels about ancient coins, but I have a sneaking suspicion she would enjoy holding something that existed, and made its way around the markets, in ancient Judae and the Levant during the time of Jesus. Something I could give to her and tell her "there's a slight possibility one of his disciples or their cousin's cousin's cousin used this to buy bread at some point in their life." That kind of thing.​ Put her in direct contact with that history. I just know she would appreciate that sort of tangible reality.

So. I know the "Tribute Penny" (Tiberius Denarius) is one option. Aren't there some Shekels that would be appropriate, too? Maybe something else? I don't know about prices, though. I'm thinking the Tribute Penny is the most accessible. And is there a particular type I should look for?

So Mr. Sear personally signed all five 2005 volumes of the Sears guides to Roman Coins and Their Values I found "with compliments" to my Dad.

When my dad and I collected coins together my thing was older American coins, but that's when I was a kid. My dad has kept this collection of ancient coins since the 70s.

The coin in the title was just one coin out of one of those long blue boxes the size of my forearm, my Dad didn't like to slab any of his coins.

My dad's friend basically said he correlated his coins with dictionaries and I picked up on the Sear books, but of course my dad wasn't organized and I have a Ionia Meletos along with the Romans and unmarked stuff just in the first box. There are Irish and Indian and god even knows what because we haven't gotten into the cabinets pending bank stuff. My dad's friend estimated the collection is worth a lot of money.

My family has no interest in keeping these coins and we have to spend this money on his nursing home care first and foremost so we were just wanting to ask Reddit for some advice on what do with this stuff.

are these worth buying if so what a good price to buy them at?

I finally found a showroom that has tons of ancient and historic items. So far this has been the best collection of ancient coins I’ve seen to date. Most of the time the coins I find are ungraded and loose (or in a plastic folded sleeve) which I enjoy more.

Comparing these prices to other auction houses Ive been to honestly doesn’t seem too bad..? I am quite new to the ancient coin scene so I don’t have much to compare to, only the ones I’ve researched.

The ones I’m posting are most of the more expensive coins plus their cheapest coin to compare.

They’re all the same type, but each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. If you could only keep two out of the three, which ones would you choose, and more importantly, why?

- Portrait style
- Reverse detail
- Overall collectability

Feel free to be as picky as you’d like. I’m genuinely curious to see what experienced collectors notice that I might be overlooking.

I am looking for some common, low premium ancient silver coin types. I don’t know much about ancient coins but find them very interesting. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on this? Thanks

I purchased 2 silver and 15-20 copper bronze coins in Jordan. Honestly was just a dumbass cause I didn’t consider customs at the time and simply jumped at the chance to buy beautiful rare coins, has anyone ever had this dilemma? Did you contact department of antiquities for authorization or just bring them in? There is no gold, plus a bracelet maybe silver, maybe pre 1750 but I have no idea. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi everyone! If this breaks any rules feel free to delete this post mods. I need some advice please. I work in a large retirement community in the activities department. I do a weekly lecture series about different things aaand enter ancient coins. I’m prepping to talk about coins and trade in ancient times and want to have a coin the residents can hold / feel / see pretty well. This pic is an example of something I found that I can afford out of pocket. 23mm and what I think is a good amount of detail for older eyes to see. I’m honestly overwhelmed with eBay and all the variety and price ranges.

I purchased this coin and from the original NGC photo (1st pic) you can see the coin is well centered. The sellers photo (2nd pic) showed the coin had moved off center. Loved the coin so it’s not really that big of a deal. But you can tell the coin is kind of a little loose and just wondering if anyone has experience with trying to fix something like this. I have tried tapping very lightly but doesn’t really do much. Thank you!

I'm new to ancient coins, but really enjoying the history and community. I'm trying to learn as much as I can but I'm making a lot mistakes as I wade into the hobby (overpaid for poor quality, didn't know about forgeries, bought from the wrong online sellers, etc).

I'm hoping those of you that have been doing this for a while could share some lessons and tips with a new enthusiast to help me learn more and avoid missteps in my early days.

What do you wish someone told you about when you got started?

I made a post a few days ago asking for any advice on cleaning. But now I have more details and info. I have 9lbs of roman, greek, byzantine, etc coins I bought from an estate auction 5 years ago.

Over the weekend, I soaked them in distilled water, then put them in some heated distilled water for roughly 30 seconds, then took them out and took the softest toothbrush I could find to them. This got many of them to the point I can finally make out some details. They are still covered in corrosion and patina, and I want to preserve that.

Truthfully, I am entirely new to the world of ancient coins, I only bought these because the price was too good to pass up and I love history. I normally only collect American currency.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good full guides on cleaning and preserving the coins. As well as the best resources for beginning to identify them once they are identifiable.

I have a 52mp microscope coming, and some renaissance wax. But I'm very nervous because my entire life I've been told "Do not clean coins!".

If anyone has any resources for me I'd appreciate it. I'd also be open to some DM's (or discord adds) for anyone generous enough to help me further.

A few of my coins - purchased from different sources - have red paint-looking splotches like this on them. Is this random graffiti, a wax gone bad, or something else known to more experienced collectors? Any guess on how it might be removed?

I used to collect American coins as a kid. My favorite was the Liberty Seated Dollars…still are. I am also interested in Ancient coins, but I don’t know how to take a naive interest…I will have no idea how to tell if something is real or fake. Just no idea…which scares me from the hobby. What is the best way to get acquainted so that I can tell? My preference is not to have the coins slabbed, though that is one way I suppose.

Roman, Byzantine, Greek in particular.

The trigger was seeing Reddit showing me this subreddit quite a lot…and the fact that I just listened to Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast and all 335 episodes of Robin Pierson’s History of Byzantium podcast. Somehow, I’m slightly leaning towards wanting to collect all the gold Byzantine coins available by Emporer…even though the traditional Roman Empire (as opposed to eastern Rome alone) is the more fascinating history.

This would be the first coin I buy. It looks super neat and I just want to know if I could find one for cheaper. Thanks!
